An Expired NICOP Now Stops You Boarding a Flight to Pakistan

Airlines must check NICOP validity before boarding. A valid one still means visa free entry. An expired one means a visa or a Pakistani passport.

Expired NICOP and boarding rules for flights to Pakistan

If you are an overseas Pakistani travelling on a foreign passport, the card in your wallet now has to be in date before you reach the gate.

Since 17 July 2026, airlines have been instructed to check that your NICOP is valid before they board you on a flight to Pakistan.

A valid NICOP changes nothing. An expired one stops you flying.

What you can board with

Documents accepted for boarding a flight to Pakistan
What you holdOutcome
Valid NICOP, on a foreign passportBoard, and enter without a visa
Valid Pakistani passportBoard
Valid Pakistani visa in a foreign passportBoard
Expired NICOPNot accepted
Cancelled NICOPNot accepted

Officials were reported as saying that no exceptions would be made for passengers who do not meet the requirement.

The important word in the top row is valid. Holding a NICOP is not the qualification. Holding one that has not expired is.

What this rule is not

Correcting the rumours about NICOP entry rules

This is where most of the damage has been done, so it is worth separating carefully.

Claims circulated that all British passport holders would be barred from 17 July, and would need a Pakistani passport or a visa regardless of what else they held.

A government spokesperson called those claims incorrect and misleading, and stated that the restriction does not apply to passengers holding a valid NICOP, who may continue to travel to Pakistan on their foreign passports.

Three further things it is not:

  • It is not country specific. It applies the same way to travellers from Britain, the United States, Europe and everywhere else.
  • It is not a new visa requirement for people whose documents are in order.
  • It is not, strictly, a new rule. It has been described as enforcing existing immigration rules rather than introducing policy. What changed is that airlines are now checking before you fly.

That last distinction explains why it caught people out. The requirement may have existed on paper for years. The enforcement point moved from the immigration desk in Pakistan to the check in desk abroad, which is a very different experience if your card has lapsed.

The question nobody has answered

We looked for this specifically and could not find it addressed anywhere.

None of the official statements we read says what happens to Pakistan Origin Card holders.

The POC is a separate NADRA document, held by foreign nationals of Pakistani origin who do not qualify for a NICOP. The directive as reported speaks about NICOP only.

We are not going to guess in either direction. A POC is not a NICOP, and telling you it counts, or that it does not, would be us inventing a rule. If you hold a POC and are booking travel, confirm with the Pakistani mission in your country before you buy the ticket, and get the answer in writing if you can.

Which document applies to whom in the first place is set out in our NICOP and POC guide.

Check the date before you book, not after

Steps to check NICOP validity before booking travel

The order here matters, because renewal is not quick.

  1. Find the expiry date on the card itself. Do not work from memory, and do not assume it matches your passport.
  2. Check it against your return date, not your outbound. A card that expires while you are in Pakistan is a different problem, and one worth asking about before you travel.
  3. If it expires within a few months, renew before booking. Cheap insurance against a schedule that slips.
  4. If it has already expired, you are choosing between renewing and applying for a Pakistani visa. Which is faster depends on where you live.
  5. Carry the physical card. A photograph on your phone is not the document.

Renewal takes longer than people expect

This is the part that turns an admin problem into a missed trip.

NADRA's published fees and timelines for a Smart NICOP, which we read from its own fee schedule on 18 August 2026, are:

CategoryFeeTimeline
NormalUSD 3931 days
UrgentUSD 5723 days
ExecutiveUSD 759 days

The normal track is a month. Somebody who discovers an expired card three weeks before a family wedding is already past it, and the executive track at nine days is the only route that helps.

Every NADRA fee, including what a CNIC costs against a NICOP, is in our fee guide.

What we could not verify

We did not read the FIA directive itself. This page is built from consistent reporting in Gulf News, Khaleej Times and The Nation, which agree on the substance and on the date.

We found no statement on a grace period for people already booked when the rule took effect.

We found no exemption mentioned for children or minors, whose NICOPs typically run for shorter terms and therefore expire more often. That silence is worth checking on if you are travelling with children.

We could not establish how consistently airlines are applying the check, or what happens if one boards you and immigration in Pakistan does not agree.

If an official statement contradicts anything here, it is right and this page is out of date. The date we checked is on it.

Questions readers are asking

Can I travel to Pakistan on an expired NICOP?

No. Since 17 July 2026 airlines have been instructed not to board passengers whose NICOP is expired or cancelled, unless they hold a valid Pakistani visa or a valid Pakistani passport.

Do I need a visa now if I hold a NICOP?

No, provided it is valid. The government stated plainly that the restriction does not apply to passengers holding a valid NICOP, who may continue to travel on their foreign passports.

Are British Pakistanis banned from entering?

No. That claim was described by a government spokesperson as incorrect and misleading. The rule is not country specific.

What if my NICOP expires while I am in Pakistan?

Nothing we read addresses this directly. Ask the mission before you travel rather than assuming.

Does this apply to Pakistan Origin Card holders?

The statements we read mention NICOP only and do not say. Confirm with the Pakistani mission in your country before booking.

How long does a NICOP renewal take?

NADRA publishes 31 days for normal at USD 39, 23 days urgent at USD 57 and 9 days executive at USD 75.

Is this a new law?

It has been described as enforcing existing immigration rules rather than new policy. What changed is that airlines now check before boarding.
