To check an Australian visa online, use VEVO, Visa Entitlement Verification Online, on the Department of Home Affairs site: it shows which visa you hold, its expiry date, the must not arrive after date, how long you can stay and your visa conditions, free of charge. It only works for a visa that is in effect, and it is the official way to prove your visa to an airline desk, employer or landlord.

Australia no longer puts a visa label in most passports. The 309 partner visa and 870 parent visa pages, for example, both say the visa is digitally linked to your passport with no label. So the grant email and VEVO are your only proof. We read the Home Affairs VEVO pages and opened the VEVO visa holder form on 1 November 2026. Here is what VEVO shows, how to use it and what to do when it shows nothing.

VEVO shows 5 things about your current visa

Home Affairs says VEVO tells you five details of your current, in-effect visa: which visa it is, its expiry date, the must not arrive after date, the period of stay and your conditions. Conditions are the rules on what you can and cannot do.

VEVO fieldWhat it means for you
Which visaThe subclass and stream, such as Visitor 600 or Student 500
Expiry dateThe last day the visa is valid
Must not arrive afterThe last date you can land in Australia on this visa
Period of stayHow long each visit or stay can last
ConditionsRules such as work limits or health insurance

The must not arrive after date is the one people miss. A visitor visa can be valid for a year, yet still require you to land before a set date on the first trip. Read it the day the grant arrives, not at the airport.

Check your own visa in 5 steps on the VEVO form

The VEVO visa holder enquiry is free and open to anyone with a granted visa. Its first required box is Document type. You then enter the details from your grant notice and passport, accept the terms and see your visa on screen.

  1. Open the Home Affairs page "Check visa details and conditions" and click "Check your own visa details".
  2. On the Visa holder enquiry form, choose your Document type from the list.
  3. Enter the reference and personal details the form asks for, exactly as on your grant notice and passport.
  4. Accept the terms and submit.
  5. Read the five fields, then save or email the result as proof.

Use the same passport you named in your application. Australia links the visa to that passport number. If you renewed your Pakistani passport after the grant, update Home Affairs before relying on VEVO, because the new number will not match. The lost or expired passport rules at FIA immigration are a separate issue at the Pakistani end.

Use VEVO as proof at the airport, at work and abroad

Home Affairs says you can use VEVO to send proof of your visa conditions to others, such as employers, landlords or the government of a country you want to visit. That makes it useful at a Pakistani airport check-in desk too.

Pakistani travellers are asked to show a valid visa before boarding, and a visa with no label is easier to prove on paper. Carry a printed VEVO result with your grant letter. The steps to check a foreign visa before flying from Pakistan explain what FIA immigration looks at on the way out.

Employers and colleges in Australia can also run checks themselves. Home Affairs says registered organisations use an ImmiAccount to see the conditions of visa holders who have given them permission. You do not have to share your login with anyone.

VEVO shows nothing when the visa is not in effect

Home Affairs says VEVO cannot show a visa that is not in effect. If you hold a bridging visa while your main visa is still running, VEVO shows only the one in effect. A record may also be missing for people who migrated before 1990.

  • Bridging visa not shown: VEVO shows the visa in effect now. A bridging visa starts only when the substantive visa ends.
  • Visa not yet granted: VEVO cannot show a pending application. Check progress in ImmiAccount instead.
  • Old permanent residents: if you migrated before 1990 and never travelled, Home Affairs says to request an electronic record of your permanent visa first.
  • Australian citizens: VEVO cannot confirm citizenship. Use your citizenship certificate or Australian passport.

If none of these fit and VEVO still returns no result, check every digit again. A wrong date of birth format or an old passport number can cause it. After that, contact Home Affairs through its official channels.

Why VEVO shows no result: bridging visa, pending application, old record, citizenship

Read your conditions before you take a job or class

Conditions are numbered rules attached to your visa. Home Affairs keeps a list of which conditions apply to each visa. VEVO shows the exact ones on yours, and breaking one can lead to cancellation.

One example from the Home Affairs visitor visa page is Condition 8501, which requires you to keep adequate health insurance. Others limit work or study. A parent on a visitor visa who helps in a family shop for wages, for instance, could breach a no work condition. When in doubt, read the condition number on VEVO and look it up on the Home Affairs conditions list before acting.

Processing times are a separate question from VEVO. VEVO only answers once a visa exists. For the wait before that, Home Affairs publishes its own guide, and the Australia visitor visa 600 fees and streams show what to apply for in the first place.

Common questions

Is the VEVO check free?

Yes. Checking your own visa in VEVO costs nothing.

Can I check an Australian visa application that is still pending?

No. VEVO shows only granted visas in effect. Track a pending case in ImmiAccount.

Why is there no visa sticker in my passport?

Home Affairs links most visas to the passport digitally, with no label, so VEVO is the proof.

Can my employer check my visa?

Yes, through a registered organisation ImmiAccount, once you give permission.

What is the must not arrive after date?

The last date you can enter Australia on that visa.

Can VEVO prove Australian citizenship?

No. Home Affairs says to use a citizenship certificate or Australian passport.

How we verified this

What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.

Last checked 1 November 2026. We read the Home Affairs Check visa details and conditions page (last updated 25 September 2026), its Check conditions online page, and opened the VEVO visa holder enquiry. The form's later fields load only in a full browser, so we could not list every box it asks for beyond Document type. We did not run a check on a real visa. The no label wording comes from the Home Affairs 309 and 870 visa pages, and Condition 8501 from its visitor visa page.
