Check If You Need a UK Transit Visa With a Pakistani Passport: £41.50 or £74.50
Check if a Pakistani passport needs a UK transit visa for a layover: £41.50 Direct Airside, £74.50 Visitor in Transit, and when a US or Canada visa helps.

Short answer: A Pakistani passport holder who changes planes in the UK may need a transit visa. A Direct Airside Transit visa costs £41.50 and a Visitor in Transit visa costs £74.50. A valid visa for the USA, Canada, Australia or New Zealand can remove the need in some cases, and the border officer decides.
Many Pakistani travellers fly to Canada, the USA or Europe through London. A short layover feels simple, until the airline refuses to check you in for the first flight. We read the GOV.UK transit visa pages and the Home Office carrier poster for August 2026 on 14 October 2026. This guide explains which visa fits which layover.
Pakistan is on the UK visa national list
The UK Immigration Rules list Pakistan among the nationalities that need a visa before travel to the UK. The Home Office carrier poster also lists Pakistan among countries that need a visa to enter or transit. So check your layover rules before you book.
The poster splits countries into two groups. The first group needs a visa even to transit airside. The second group needs a visa only to go through the UK border. The group is shown by underlining in the poster, which did not survive in the text copy we read. Use the GOV.UK "Check if you need a UK visa" tool, choose "Transit", and let it give the final answer for your passport.
Two transit visas exist and the price differs
A Direct Airside Transit visa is for passengers who stay inside the airport and never pass UK border control. A Visitor in Transit visa is for passengers who do go through border control but leave within 48 hours.
| Visa | Use it when | Fee (GOV.UK) |
|---|---|---|
| Direct Airside Transit visa | You change flights and do not pass UK border control | £41.50 |
| Visitor in Transit visa | You pass UK border control, for example to move luggage, and leave within 48 hours | £74.50 |
| Standard Visitor visa | You stay over 48 hours, or pass through the UK often over 6 months | See the visit visa fee |
GOV.UK says the fee may change slightly depending on the country where you apply. Your airline can tell you whether your connection goes through border control. Ask the airline before you book.

You may not need a visa if you hold certain other visas
The Home Office poster lets a visa national transit airside without a visa if they hold a valid visa for Australia, Canada, New Zealand or the USA and travel to or from that country. The decision stays with the immigration officer at the border.
For landside transit the poster asks for the same visa plus a valid airline ticket on a reasonable journey, and an onward flight that leaves before 23:59 the next day. Other countries' e-visas are not accepted for landside transit. GOV.UK also says you do not need a transit visa if you hold a UK Standard Visitor visa or a valid electronic travel authorisation. If you plan a real stay instead, see how to apply in our guide to the UK visit visa from Pakistan.
Apply online and book a biometrics appointment
You apply online, then go to a visa application centre to give fingerprints and a photo, and take your passport with you. GOV.UK says you will usually get a decision within 3 weeks.
- Use the GOV.UK check tool to confirm which transit visa applies.
- Apply online and pay the fee shown for Pakistan.
- Book your appointment at the nearest visa application centre.
- Take your passport, give biometrics and collect your passport on the day, if the centre offers that.
- Wait for the Home Office email about the decision.

Do not leave this to the last week. Three weeks is the usual decision time, and a faster service may exist at your centre, so ask when you book.
Bring proof of your next flight and entry rights
GOV.UK asks for a valid passport and proof that you can enter the country you are travelling to. That can be a residence permit, a green card or a valid visa. You may also need to show why you are going there and where you will stay.
You may be asked to prove that the onward journey is booked. A flight booking email, a printed ticket or a boarding pass on your phone is accepted. Bring the visa and these papers when you travel. If you also carry a heavy bag, read the rules in the guide to baggage allowance before you pack.
Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man need more
A trip through the UK to Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man usually needs a Standard Visitor visa unless you are exempt. GOV.UK says you are exempt if you hold a valid Irish biometric visa marked BC or BC BIVS, or a valid visa for the Channel Islands or Isle of Man.
GOV.UK also says a long-term Standard Visitor visa for 2, 5 or 10 years exists for people who must pass through the UK often. Each stay on it is up to 6 months.

Common questions
Does a Pakistani need a transit visa to change planes in London?
It depends on your route and papers. Pakistan is on the UK visa national list, so check the GOV.UK tool under "Transit" before you book.
How much is the UK Direct Airside Transit visa?
GOV.UK lists it at £41.50, and says the fee may change slightly by country.
How much is the Visitor in Transit visa?
GOV.UK lists it at £74.50. You use it when you go through UK border control and leave within 48 hours.
Can a US visa let me skip the UK transit visa?
It can in some cases. The Home Office poster allows airside transit with a valid visa for the USA, Canada, Australia or New Zealand, but an officer decides at the border.
How long does the decision take?
GOV.UK says you will usually get a decision within 3 weeks.
What if I stay more than 48 hours?
You then need a Standard Visitor visa instead of a transit visa.
How we verified this
What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.
Last checked on 14 October 2026, Pakistan time. We read the GOV.UK transit visa pages, the UK Immigration Rules visa national list, and the Home Office "UK Visa requirements, August 2026" poster. We could not see which group Pakistan falls in on the poster, because the colour and underline marks did not appear in the text. We did not apply for a transit visa. Rules, fees and lists change, so confirm on GOV.UK before you travel.
