A kilo of live broiler chicken cost an average of Rs 383.31 across Pakistan in the week ended 8 October 2026. Two weeks earlier it was Rs 340.63. That is Rs 42.68 more a kilo, a rise of 12.5% in two weeks, according to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS).
Every one of the 17 cities PBS checks saw chicken go up over those two weeks. Khuzdar is now the dearest at Rs 430 a kilo. Lahore is the cheapest at Rs 348, but even Lahore is Rs 40 up.
We read the PBS city annexes for 24 September, 1 October and 8 October 2026 and compared all 17 cities. Every price below is a PBS weekly average for a live bird, by weight.
Live chicken rose Rs 43 a kilo in two weeks
The national average went from Rs 340.63 on 24 September to Rs 365.31 on 1 October, up 7.25%. It then rose another 4.93% to Rs 383.31 on 8 October. Chicken was the second biggest weekly riser in this week's index, behind flour.

A year ago, in the week ended 9 October 2025, live chicken averaged Rs 350.24 a kilo. So chicken is now 9.44% dearer than a year ago. Most of that gap opened in just the last two weeks.
The rise shows up across the wider weekly index too. Our report on weekly inflation for 8 October has the full list of items that moved.

The highest market price PBS recorded this week was Rs 430 a kilo. The lowest was Rs 348. Two weeks ago the range was Rs 300 to Rs 390.
Khuzdar, Larkana and Multan rose most in the last week
In the week to 8 October alone, Larkana jumped Rs 34.65 a kilo, and Multan, Bannu and Bahawalpur Rs 30 each. Khuzdar rose Rs 50 in one week, after no change the week before. Karachi rose only Rs 6.68 this week, after a Rs 35 jump the week before.

Over the two weeks, Hyderabad and Larkana rose the most, by Rs 55 and Rs 53. Gujranwala rose the least, by Rs 27. No city escaped a rise of at least Rs 27 a kilo.
For a family buying 4 kilos of live chicken a month, the two week rise adds about Rs 170 to the monthly bill at the national average, on our arithmetic. In Hyderabad it is about Rs 220.
Live weight is not the meat price you pay
PBS tracks the price of a live broiler by weight. Most shoppers buy cleaned meat, which costs more per kilo, because feathers, blood and some parts are removed first. So the shop price for meat will be higher than the figures above.
The live price is still the best guide to where meat prices are heading. When live birds rise Rs 43 a kilo, the meat price tends to follow. PBS does not track cleaned meat separately in the weekly index.
Eggs did not follow chicken up much. A dozen farm eggs averaged Rs 260.80 this week, up 0.49%, and still 18.88% cheaper than a year ago.
PBS does not give a reason for the rise
PBS records prices. It does not explain them. The federal food ministry's news page had no notice on poultry prices when we checked it on 9 October 2026.
Poultry prices in Pakistan are not fixed by the federal government. Provincial price control laws let district administrations notify retail rates for essential items, and a shop selling above a notified rate can be fined.
Food safety is a separate matter. If chicken looks or smells spoiled, the complaint goes to the provincial food authority. In Punjab, that is the Punjab Food Authority, and the steps are in our page on the Punjab Food Authority complaint line.
How to check and report an unfair chicken price
The PBS city average is not a legal price. It does give you a fair yardstick to see whether a shop is far above the rest of your city.
- Open the latest PBS weekly SPI release and download the city annex PDF.
- Find Chicken Farm Broiler (Live) and read your city's minimum, average and maximum.
- Check whether your district has notified a rate for chicken, and look at the price the shop displays.
- Note the shop name, address, the price charged and the time.
- In Punjab, report it on the Qeemat Punjab app or 0800-02345, as set out in our page on reporting overcharging in Punjab.
A complaint works best when the shop has charged above a notified rate. Charging above the PBS average alone is not an offence.
