Free Gemini in Pakistan Is Real: We Got 5 TB, You Get 400 GB

Google's free Gemini year for students in Pakistan is real, and it is not new. We hold a student claim on our own Google One account, and it reads Google AI Pro with 5 TB, member since 2 November 2025. A student claiming today gets something smaller: Google AI Plus with 400 GB, free for one year, redeemed by 31 December 2026.

The route is still student verification on a school email address. Two steps around it have tightened since we claimed ours, and the plan at the end of it is smaller.

We re-read Google's student page and Google One's help page on 23 September 2026 before writing this. What follows is those two pages, plus one account we have actually held for close to a year.

Our own account holds AI Pro with 5 TB, claimed in November 2025

We are not reporting this one second hand. Our Google One account carries a student claim made in Pakistan, and the plan panel reads Google AI Pro with 5 TB of storage, member since 2 November 2025. A twelve month term from that date runs out in early November 2026.

The claim went through a university email address on gcu.edu.pk, issued by the IT department at Government College University Lahore. That address carries the student's roll number, runs its webmail at web.gcu.edu.pk, and comes with Microsoft 365 attached, so it also opens in Outlook. An ordinary Pakistani university account, in other words, not anything unusual.

Verification was a code sent to that university address, as we recall it. It was instant. Not a queue, not a document upload, not a wait of days. The account was approved and the plan was live.

Two things that claim did not involve, and they are the reason this article exists. No card was asked for. And the subscription was claimed on the university email account itself, not on a personal Gmail.

That date matters more than the storage number. November 2025 sits inside Google's earlier student round, not the one running now. So our account is evidence that the offer works for Pakistanis, and evidence that what it paid out then is not what it pays out today.

Worth saying plainly: this offer existed before Google opened its Pakistan office. The push into Pakistan came after. Google promoting a programme locally is not the same as Google inventing it for the local market, and the terms moved in the meantime.

A student claiming today gets AI Plus with 400 GB

Google's student page, served to a visitor in Pakistan, offers a one year Google AI Plus student membership with 400 GB of cloud storage, two times higher usage limits in Gemini, for college students aged 18 and over. Redemption closes on 31 December 2026.

400 GB against 5 TB is a twelve times difference. It is still a real free year, and for most students 400 GB is more storage than they will fill. But a reader who came here because a friend said 5 TB should leave knowing the number on offer today is 400 GB.

The fine print on Google's Pakistan page is blunt about the ending. Unless you cancel first, Google AI Plus charges Rs 1,400 a month once the trial finishes. A valid payment method is required at sign up, and Google says eligibility has to be verified again each year to keep access.

The 5 TB screenshots come from Google's earlier student round

Google One's own help page settles the argument. It says that in 2025 and early 2026, Google One offered a Google AI Pro student trial, and points former trial members towards a limited time discount when their twelve months end. Different plan, different round, closed to new claims.

That single line explains most of the confusion in Pakistani coverage. People who claimed in 2025 genuinely have AI Pro with 5 TB, exactly as we do, and their screenshots are real. The screenshots are just dated.

We checked Google's student page twice on 23 September 2026, on the default locale and with the English query parameter, and both showed Google AI Plus with 400 GB and the Rs 1,400 figure. There was no 5 TB anywhere on the page served to us.

One cheerful note buried in Google's own copy: people whose 2025 AI Pro trial has expired may qualify for the current offer. So the round we are on is not necessarily the last one.

Google does not require an email address ending in edu.pk

Nothing Google publishes names a domain. The requirement on Google One's help page is to verify your student status through SheerID using a valid school email address, at a higher education institution in a country where the plans are supported. HEC recognition is not mentioned either.

Our own claim ran on gcu.edu.pk and was recognised instantly, so a Pakistani university domain clearly works. That is useful evidence, and it is not a rule. Plenty of recognised universities here do not use an edu.pk address at all. Aga Khan University, to take one, sits on aku.edu. A rule that required edu.pk would lock out its students, and no such rule exists in Google's terms.

What actually happens is a lookup. SheerID holds a list of institutions and checks whether yours is on it. If your university is missing, SheerID publishes an Add School Request form, and its own FAQ says the research process may take up to 30 days. There is also a document review route, where an enrolment letter, a current class schedule, a fee receipt or a transcript showing classes in progress can stand in for the email check.

1. Find out what your university email actually is. Many Pakistani students have one issued at admission and have never opened it.
2. Check the spelling of your institution as SheerID lists it, not as you normally abbreviate it. NUST and FAST are searched by their full names.
3. Keep a current term document ready. Enrolment letter, class schedule, fee receipt or transcript, dated inside the current term or the last three months.
4. Match your name exactly. SheerID compares the name you type against the name printed on the document.
5. Start early if your university is not listed. Thirty days of review against a 31 December 2026 deadline is tight if you leave it to December.

Two steps have tightened since we claimed ours

Google's documented procedure today is one route: go to one.google.com/ai-student, pick a student offer, verify through SheerID, then complete the subscription including a payment method, on a personal Google Account rather than the one your university administers.

Set that against what we did. Student verification on a school email address is common to both, so the spine of the claim is unchanged. The card and the personal account are not. Neither was part of our November 2025 claim, and both are in Google's requirements now.

We have not re-run the claim, so we cannot tell you when either one came in, or whether the verification screens look the same. We are not going to describe screens we did not see. What we can say is that a student reading an older account of this, including ours, should expect a card and a personal account today.

For the current claim itself, how Pakistani students claim the free year of Google AI Plus sets it out screen by screen. The account rule is the one most people trip on, because the school address goes into the verification and the subscription goes somewhere else entirely.

The payment method is the other wall, and it is the newer of the two for anyone comparing with 2025. A card has to sit on the account even though nothing is charged during the free year, and if a Pakistani card is declined while the money still leaves the account, a payment that failed with the money deducted follows the usual reversal rules.

What we could not check

We can tell you what our account shows and what Google publishes. We cannot tell you which Pakistani institutions SheerID already holds, how long a manual review really takes for a student here, or which local cards pass the billing step.

We also did not re-run the claim. One account, claimed once, in November 2025. Everything we say about the current flow comes from Google's own documentation, not from a fresh walkthrough.

As of 23 September 2026 we have had no notice from Google about our own term ending, even though it is due in November. Google's help page says it notifies people before the conversion. We are simply reporting that nothing has arrived yet, which is why we tell students to set their own reminder rather than wait for an email.

Treat any page or person offering to activate this for a fee as a scam, because a free offer with a hard deadline is exactly the shape the newest scams running in Pakistan take. Google charges nothing for the claim and asks nobody to unlock it for you.
