14 August: Roads Closed, Fireworks at Five Places, Rain Forecast
Islamabad shuts part of the Expressway and Faisal Avenue, heavy vehicles banned to 14 August. Lahore fireworks locations, and rain is forecast.
The Independence Day plans are out. If you live in Islamabad, two significant roads close. If you live in Lahore, there are fireworks at five locations.
And rain is forecast across much of the country.
Here is what is actually happening on 14 August 2026, and what it means if you have to move around.
Islamabad: what closes

Traffic is being directed toward Rawat GT Road and the Koral Expressway heading to the Khanna Pul loop.
That Ammar Chowk closure is the one to note if you are out on the night of the 13th, because it runs right through the hours when most people are travelling to see the midnight celebrations.
What stays open
More useful than the closure list, if you genuinely need to get somewhere.
Expected to remain open: Lehtrar Road, Park Road, Rawal Dam Chowk, Murree Road, the Serena Hotel approach, Suhrawardy Road, Jinnah Avenue and Margalla Road.
One caution. Traffic plans are adjusted on the day, and a road on this list can close at short notice if crowds build. Treat it as the intention rather than a guarantee, and check before you set off rather than after you are stuck.
Midnight is the busy moment, not the morning
Fireworks and a Pakistan Air Force flypast are set for midnight at the Marka-e-Haq monument on the H-8 Expressway.
That matters for planning. Independence Day traffic in Pakistan does not peak in the morning like a working day. It peaks late on the 13th as people head out, and again after midnight as they head home.
If you need to be somewhere on the evening of the 13th, and it involves crossing the city, leave far earlier than the distance suggests.
Lahore: fireworks at five locations
Lahore has fireworks planned at:
- Greater Iqbal Park
- Liberty Chowk
- Gulshan-e-Iqbal Park
- Kumahan
- Adda Plot
Expect heavy congestion around all five, and around Liberty Chowk in particular, which struggles on an ordinary Friday evening.
We could not find a Karachi plan
Being straight about a gap rather than filling it.
We looked for a current Karachi traffic plan for 14 August and did not find one. Sindh has separately announced the public holiday.
If a Karachi plan is issued, it will most likely come from the traffic police a day ahead, which is how the Islamabad one appeared. We are not reproducing an older Karachi plan from a previous year, because routes change and a stale diversion list sends people the wrong way.
A warning about what you will find online today
This is worth a moment because it nearly caught us.
Searching for Independence Day traffic plans returns articles that look completely current, with detailed road lists, published by real newspapers. At least one we checked was from a different year entirely, identifiable only by its article number.
Road plans change between years. A closure list from a previous Independence Day will confidently send you toward a road that is shut.
So check the date on anything you read today, including this page. Everything above comes from sources carrying a 2026 date.
Rain is forecast, and it changes the evening
A three day spell of rain has been forecast across Pakistan.
We are not giving city by city timings, because the only sources offering hour by hour predictions for a specific future date were commercial weather sites rather than the Met Department. On a day when families plan outdoor events, a confident wrong rain time is worse than a general warning.
What rain means practically on the 14th: wet roads with heavier than normal traffic, crowds moving suddenly for cover, and fireworks in damp conditions. If you are going out, allow for all three.

If you are going out on the 14th
- Leave much earlier than you think. The distance is not the problem, the diversions are.
- Carry cash. Card machines and mobile data both struggle in dense crowds.
- Agree a meeting point before you arrive anywhere with a crowd, because phone networks congest exactly when you need them.
- Keep children well back from aerial fireworks. Burns from fireworks are the single most common Independence Day injury.
- Do not do rooftop or aerial firing. Celebratory gunfire kills people every year, and the bullet comes down somewhere.
The rest of the long weekend
14 August falls on a Friday this year, so bank branches are shut through the weekend and reopen on Monday 17 August. If you have any banking to do, it needed doing yesterday, and the detail is in our piece on what is closed on 14 August.
Monday 17 August is also the day the Hajj first instalment collection opens and the PTA eSIM fee cap takes effect, which makes it a busier date than the holiday itself.
