Banks Shut for Three Days From 14 August. Do Your Banking Now.

Independence Day falls on a Friday this year. That single fact is the one worth planning around.

Because 14 August 2026 is a public holiday and Saturday and Sunday are the normal weekly holidays, bank branches are expected to stay shut for three consecutive days and reopen on Monday 17 August.

If you need a human at a bank counter this week, Thursday is your last chance.

The four days, in order

ATMs, mobile apps and internet banking are not branch services and normally keep running. What stops is anything that needs somebody behind a counter: cash over the limit, a pay order, a locker, an account opening, a signature verification, a physical cheque.

One thing to be careful about

You will see this closure reported everywhere as settled. It is worth being precise about what is actually confirmed.

The public holiday on 14 August is not in doubt. Neither is the weekend. The three day closure follows from those two facts sitting next to each other, which is a safe inference.

What has not happened yet is the formal step. As of 11 August, the State Bank of Pakistan had not issued its notification on the bank holiday. That circular usually appears closer to the day.

So plan for a three day closure, because that is almost certainly what happens. Just do not treat Monday reopening as officially notified until the State Bank says so, particularly if something time critical depends on it.

The Monday problem nobody is mentioning

Here is why this matters more than a normal long weekend.

Monday 17 August is a busy date in its own right. Two things land on it:

1. Hajj 2027 first instalment collection opens. Payments run through the Pak Hajj app, and the policy requires all Hajj dues to move through formal banking channels. We set out the costs and the schedule in our piece on Hajj 2027 package prices.
2. The PTA eSIM fee cap takes effect, capping the charge at Rs 1,500 with ten free transfers, which we covered in the eSIM fee cap.

So anyone funding a Hajj instalment is looking at three days of closed branches immediately before the collection opens. If the money has to move between accounts, or come out of a term deposit, or be drawn as cash, that needs doing by Thursday 13 August rather than over the weekend.

What to do before Friday

1. Any counter visit, do it by Thursday. Pay orders, demand drafts, lockers, account opening, anything needing a signature.
2. Cheques need extra time. A cheque deposited late in the week will not clear across a three day gap.
3. Draw cash early. ATMs run, but they get emptied over a long holiday weekend, particularly in smaller towns.
4. Anything due on 17 August should be funded before the weekend, not on the morning itself.
5. Check your salary date. If your salary normally lands on the 14th, banks differ on whether it credits on the holiday or the next working day.

What actually happens on the day

This is the 79th anniversary of independence, and the official programme is fairly fixed.

The day opens with a 31 gun salute in the federal capital and 21 gun salutes in the provincial capitals. The national flag is raised at Parliament House and at the Presidency in Islamabad.

In Islamabad a siren sounds at 9:59 am and traffic comes to a standstill for one minute.

Traffic plans are not out yet

City traffic arrangements and road closures for Independence Day had not been announced when we published this on 11 August.

Be careful with anything you see claiming otherwise this week. Road closure notices circulating right now relate to the Chehlum processions on 10 August, which is a different event with different routes. Reusing them for Friday would send you the wrong way.

Traffic plans for 14 August are normally issued a day or two ahead by each city police force. The same is true of any mobile service restrictions, which are decided locally and close to the day.

What else is closed

Government offices, schools and colleges are closed for the public holiday. Most private offices follow.
