Short answer: Tomatoes averaged Rs 93.17 a kilo in Pakistan in the week ended 22 October 2026, down 21.99 per cent in a week and 71.72 per cent on the year. Onions went the other way, up 4.19 per cent to Rs 188.57. A kilo of onions now costs about twice a kilo of tomatoes. Potatoes eased to Rs 49.47.

These are the prices the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) collected in 17 cities for its weekly Sensitive Price Indicator, released on 23 October. We read the PBS summary and city table on 24 October and compared each city with the week before. Below are tomato, onion, potato and garlic prices for every city, plus the five week trend.

Tomatoes are Rs 93 a kilo, down Rs 26 in a week

The national average for tomatoes was Rs 93.17 a kilo on 22 October 2026, against Rs 119.43 on 15 October. That is a fall of Rs 26.26, or 21.99 per cent, the biggest weekly fall of all 51 items. A year ago tomatoes cost Rs 329.45 a kilo.

Tomatoes have now fallen two weeks running. They were Rs 155.21 on 8 October, so the price has dropped Rs 62.04, or 40 per cent, in a fortnight, by our arithmetic. Tomatoes were the single biggest reason weekly inflation fell on 15 October.

PBS does not explain the fall. Its national accounts, approved on 19 October, separately record that tomato output grew 44 per cent in 2025-26. That is an annual figure for the last fiscal year, not a reason for this week's price.

Onions are Rs 189 a kilo, up 4 per cent in a week

Onions averaged Rs 188.57 a kilo on 22 October, up Rs 7.58 from Rs 180.99. Onions are now 72.81 per cent dearer than a year ago, when they cost Rs 109.12. Prices rose in 10 cities, fell in 2 and held in 5.

Islamabad had the dearest onions at Rs 234.17, then Rawalpindi at Rs 233.49 and Peshawar at Rs 225.45. Quetta was cheapest at Rs 144.68. Larkana and Bannu saw the biggest jumps, up Rs 20.01 and Rs 20 a kilo.

Sukkur had the cheapest tomatoes at Rs 50 a kilo and Islamabad the dearest at Rs 167.43. Quetta was the only city where tomatoes went up. Every other city saw tomatoes fall or hold, with Sialkot and Sukkur down 37.5 per cent.

Each figure is the average PBS found in that city's sample markets. Islamabad's tomato range was Rs 140 to Rs 200, while Karachi's ran from Rs 50 to Rs 100. The northern cities pay the most for both vegetables this week. An earlier comparison of these cities is in chicken, egg, onion and tomato prices by city.

Potatoes are Rs 49 and garlic Rs 403 a kilo

Potatoes averaged Rs 49.47 a kilo on 22 October, down 1.38 per cent in a week and 40.75 per cent on the year. Garlic rose 0.74 per cent to Rs 403.28. Bahawalpur potatoes fell Rs 10.07 to Rs 33.02, the biggest drop.

Islamabad paid the most for potatoes at Rs 72.62 a kilo, and Larkana the least at Rs 31.58. Garlic ranged widely, from Rs 289.83 in Hyderabad to Rs 600 in Khuzdar. Islamabad garlic averaged Rs 498.17, with a market range from Rs 350 to Rs 650.

Tomatoes fell Rs 59 and onions held steady over five weeks

Over the five weeks from 24 September, tomatoes fell from Rs 152.34 to Rs 93.17 a kilo, PBS's weekly releases show. Onions barely moved overall, from Rs 188.68 to Rs 188.57, after dipping to Rs 180.99 on 15 October.

Pakistan average tomato price for the five weeks from 24 September to 22 October 2026

For a family that buys 2 kg of tomatoes and 3 kg of onions a week, the bill is now about Rs 752, by our arithmetic. Last week the same shopping cost about Rs 782. The cheaper tomatoes saved more than the dearer onions cost.

To use these prices when you shop:

  1. Find your city in the table and note the tomato and onion averages.
  2. Compare them with your vegetable seller's price for the same quality.
  3. Check your district's official price list if one is issued, because that is the legal limit.
  4. Buy tomatoes in smaller amounts while the price is falling, since they spoil fast.
  5. Look again next Friday, when PBS releases the next week.

Both vegetables feed into the wider figure in weekly inflation for 22 October.

How we verified this

What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.

We read the PBS SPI executive summary for 22 October 2026 and the city price table on 24 October 2026, along with the 15 October city table and the summaries for 8 October, 1 October and 24 September. The tomato output figure is from the PBS press release on the 118th National Accounts Committee meeting of 19 October 2026. The 8 October potato price did not read cleanly from that week's summary, so we leave it out. Family costs and two week changes are our own arithmetic. PBS gives no reasons for price moves.
