How to Claim Travel Insurance in Pakistan for Medical, Baggage or Cancellation
A travel insurance claim is not the same as an airline baggage claim. How to claim for a medical emergency, lost baggage or cancellation, and the deadlines.

A travel insurance claim in Pakistan is a different process from an airline baggage claim, even though both can involve a lost bag. Travel insurance pays against the policy you bought before the trip, for a medical emergency, a cancelled trip or baggage trouble, and you claim it from the insurer, not the airline.
We looked at how Pakistani travel insurers actually run a claim, from the first call abroad to the paperwork once you're home. If your bag never showed up at the belt, the first move is a report at the airline's desk, not a call to your insurer, and that process is covered separately.

A travel insurance claim is not the same as an airline baggage claim
Travel insurance is a policy you bought from an insurer before the trip. An airline baggage claim is a complaint against the airline itself, filed at the airport the day your bag goes missing or turns up damaged. They can run side by side for the same trip, but they're separate claims to separate parties.
If your bag was delayed, damaged or lost, start with the airline. File a Property Irregularity Report at the arrivals desk before you leave the airport. We've covered that process in full, with its own deadlines, in how to claim lost or damaged baggage at a Pakistani airport. Travel insurance comes in afterward, to cover costs the airline doesn't, such as emergency replacement items while you wait, or it covers things the airline never touches at all, like a medical bill abroad or a cancelled trip.
Do these things immediately, while you're still abroad
What you do in the first hours after something goes wrong decides whether the claim gets paid later. Insurers lean heavily on documentation created at the time, not an account written up weeks afterward.
- Call your insurer's 24 hour assistance line before arranging treatment, where the situation allows it.
- If you're treated, get a medical report, doctor's notes and original bills before you leave the hospital.
- For a delay or cancellation, get written confirmation from the airline stating the reason and how long it lasted.
- Keep every receipt, your boarding pass and any baggage tags, even the small ones.
For a genuine emergency where you couldn't reach the assistance line first, most policies still allow the claim, but only if you contact the assistance company within a set window afterward, often around 30 days. Miss that window and the claim can be refused regardless of how real the emergency was.

Documents a medical emergency claim needs
A medical claim lives or dies on the hospital paperwork. Ask for everything before you're discharged, because getting records reissued from Pakistan after you've flown home is slow and sometimes impossible.
- A medical report naming the diagnosis and treatment given.
- The doctor's notes and any referral letters.
- Original hospital bills and pharmacy receipts.
- Your passport pages showing entry and exit dates, for verifying the trip's timing.
Documents a baggage, delay or cancellation claim needs
These claims depend on the airline's own confirmation as much as your own paperwork. An insurer can't verify a delay happened without something from the carrier itself.
| Claim type | What the insurer needs from you |
|---|---|
| Baggage delay | Written confirmation from the airline of the delay, plus receipts for anything you had to buy while waiting |
| Baggage damage or loss | The Property Irregularity Report filed with the airline, and proof of ownership for the contents |
| Flight delay or cancellation | A written statement from the airline confirming the reason and duration, plus receipts for food or a hotel you had to pay for |
| Trip cancellation before departure | Proof of why the trip was cancelled, such as a medical certificate, and the booking cancellation invoice |
Baggage delay cover usually only kicks in once the delay passes a set number of hours, commonly around 12, and only pays for essentials like clothing, medication and toiletries, not a full replacement of the bag's contents. Check that threshold on your schedule before assuming every short delay qualifies.

How long you have to file once you're back in Pakistan
Most non-emergency claims, including baggage and cancellation, need a completed claim form within a set window after your return, commonly around 21 days. Send the form together with your invoices, proof of ownership, travel documents and any medical paperwork to the insurer's claims department, not piecemeal over several weeks.
Emergency medical claims usually move faster once the paperwork is in, because the assistance company was already involved while you were abroad. A cancellation or baggage claim submitted cold, after you're home, takes longer simply because the insurer is reconstructing the story from documents alone.
Common reasons travel insurance claims get refused
Most refusals come down to a missing document from someone other than you, the airline or the hospital, rather than anything wrong with the claim itself.
- No written confirmation from the airline for a delay or cancellation claim.
- The assistance line wasn't contacted within the policy's time limit for a medical emergency.
- The trip was booked before the travel insurance policy existed, for a cancellation claim.
- The claim form arrived after the deadline counted from your return to Pakistan.

If the insurer refuses to pay, you can still escalate
Ask the insurer for the refusal reason in writing before accepting it as final. If the refusal still looks wrong once you've checked your policy wording, SECP and the Federal Insurance Ombudsman both take complaints against insurers at no cost. The full escalation route, including the ombudsman's address, helpline and online form, is in how to complain when an insurance claim is refused.
Common questions
Is a travel insurance claim the same as an airline baggage claim?
No. The baggage claim goes to the airline through a Property Irregularity Report. The travel insurance claim goes to the insurer who sold your policy, and can cover medical, cancellation and baggage costs together.
How soon must I contact my insurer after a medical emergency abroad?
Call the assistance line before treatment where possible. If that's not possible, most policies still require contact within a set window afterward, often around 30 days.
How long after I return do I have to file a claim?
Commonly around 21 days for non-emergency claims, including baggage and cancellation, but confirm the exact figure on your own policy.
Does travel insurance pay for a short baggage delay?
Usually only once the delay passes a minimum number of hours, commonly around 12, and only for essentials like medication and clothing, not the full value of your bag.
What if the airline and my insurer both owe me something?
File both claims. The airline claim covers its own liability for the bag, and the travel insurance claim can cover costs the airline doesn't, such as emergency purchases while you waited.
How we verified this
What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.
We reviewed Pakistani travel insurers' published claim procedures on 5 October 2026 for the assistance line process, the documents required and the typical filing windows. Exact deadlines and thresholds vary by insurer and policy, which the body states rather than quoting one figure as universal law.
