Cancel a Pakistan Railways E-Ticket: 10 to 30 Per Cent Is Deducted, Nothing After Departure
Pakistan Railways keeps 10, 20 or 30 per cent when you cancel an e-ticket, and refunds nothing once the train leaves. See the cut-offs, ID needed and steps.

Short answer: Cancel a Pakistan Railways e-ticket at least 2 hours before departure, and before the guard chart is printed. Pakistan Railways keeps 10 per cent of the fare if you cancel more than 48 hours ahead, 20 per cent from 48 to 24 hours, and 30 per cent inside 24 hours. After the train leaves, an e-ticket cannot be refunded.
A Rs 3,750 economy seat from Karachi to Lahore comes back as Rs 3,375 if you cancel three days early. Cancel the evening before and you get Rs 2,625. Miss the cut-off and you get nothing. That gap is the reason to know the rule before you press cancel.
We read the Terms and Conditions page of Pakistan Railways on 12 October 2026. It sets out separate rules for e-tickets bought online and for paper tickets bought at a counter. This page covers the online ticket.
The deduction is 10, 20 or 30 per cent of what you paid
Pakistan Railways deducts 10 per cent of the paid amount when you cancel more than 48 hours before departure, 20 per cent between 48 and 24 hours, and 30 per cent within 24 hours. The clock runs from the train's departure at its originating station.
One detail changes the maths. The clock does not always run from the station where you board. It runs from the train's originating station, or from the origin of the quota your seat was sold from. If you board a through train halfway, count from the start of its run, not from your station.
| When you cancel | Deducted | You get back on Rs 3,750 |
|---|---|---|
| More than 48 hours before departure | 10 per cent | Rs 3,375 |
| 48 to 24 hours before departure | 20 per cent | Rs 3,000 |
| Within 24 hours of departure | 30 per cent | Rs 2,625 |
| Less than 2 hours, or after the guard chart | Cannot cancel online | Nothing online |
| After the train has left | No e-ticket refund | Nothing |
The Rs 3,750 figure is the economy fare on several Karachi to Lahore trains in our fare check for five main routes. Use your own fare to work out your refund.

The guard chart closes the online window early
An e-ticket cannot be cancelled once the guard chart is produced, or when the train leaves in less than 2 hours. The guard chart is the printed list of reserved passengers. At most stations it is produced about 2 hours before departure.
At some smaller stations it is printed the night before, because the booking office closes early. Pakistan Railways gives its own example. Shalimar Express leaves at 6:00 am, so its guard chart is produced at 8:00 pm the previous night, and an online user cannot cancel after that.
So for an early morning train, treat the evening before as your real deadline. Do not plan to cancel at dawn.
Online refunds go back the same way you paid
Pakistan Railways says a refund for an online ticket is paid only through the service provider that took your payment, and by the same payment method. You must show your original CNIC and the cancellation message you received from Pakistan Railways.
The cancellation message matters. The terms say there is no refund if you cannot produce it. Do not delete it, and take a screenshot of it before you close the app.
A paper ticket works differently. It is refunded only at a reservation centre, with a photocopy of your CNIC. The paper ticket rules also allow a refund of up to 50 per cent within 3 hours after departure, which an e-ticket does not get. Our page on Pakistan Railways refund rules for paper tickets sets those out.

A late or cancelled train changes the rules
If the train is cancelled, or runs more than 6 hours late, Pakistan Railways says no deduction applies. You must write an application, get it signed by the station master to confirm the delay, and send it to the Chief Commercial Manager's office.
The same route applies if your reserved coach is not on the train because of damage or an accident. You then get a full refund. You need a certificate from the station master that the coach was not available, plus a written request to the CCM office. The refund goes back through the same payment method.
If your reserved seat is simply not available for another reason, Pakistan Railways says it will adjust you to a free seat on the train. That is not a cancellation, so no money moves.
Other ticket rules, such as the 90 day booking window and breaking a journey, are set out in the Pakistan Railways ticket rules guide.
How to cancel without losing the refund
Decide early, cancel inside the allowed window, save the cancellation message, and take your original CNIC to the service provider that took your payment. The terms page does not list the screens in the booking app, so we give the order of actions, not the taps.
- Check the departure time of the train from its originating station on your ticket.
- Work out which band you are in: more than 48 hours, 48 to 24 hours, or inside 24 hours.
- Cancel from the account or booking channel where you bought the ticket, well before the guard chart.
- Save the cancellation message and a screenshot.
- Take your original CNIC and the message to the service provider that received your payment.
- Check that the refund returns by the same method you used to pay.

If you are not sure how you bought the ticket, the method matters. A ticket bought at a counter follows the paper rules, and a ticket bought online follows the online rules.
Where to complain if the refund does not come
Complain in writing with your train number, date, seat and the cancellation message. Pakistan Railways publishes a one week target for ticket refund complaints, and the contact routes are listed in how to complain to Pakistan Railways.
Keep every message. A refund dispute without the cancellation message is very hard to win, because the terms ask for it by name.
Common questions
Can I cancel a Pakistan Railways e-ticket after the train has left?
No. The terms say refund after departure is not possible for e-ticket passengers because of technical limits. A paper ticket can be refunded within 3 hours after departure.
How much is deducted if I cancel the day before?
If you cancel within 24 hours of departure, 30 per cent of the paid amount is deducted. Between 48 and 24 hours before departure it is 20 per cent.
Why can I not cancel 90 minutes before the train?
Online cancellation closes when departure is less than 2 hours away, or once the guard chart is produced. Both close the window for e-tickets.
Do I need my CNIC to collect an online refund?
Yes. Pakistan Railways asks for your original CNIC and the cancellation message at the service provider. A photocopy of the CNIC is enough for a paper ticket.
What if my train is more than 6 hours late?
No deduction applies. Write an application, get the station master's signature that confirms the delay, and send it to the Chief Commercial Manager's office.
Can someone else cancel my ticket for me?
The terms do not say whether a representative can do it. They ask for the passenger's original CNIC, so ask the service provider before you send someone in your place.
How we verified this
What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.
We read the Terms and Conditions of Pakistan Railways and its refund policy page on 12 October 2026. We did not test the cancel screens in the booking app, and we did not cancel a live ticket. The fare in the example comes from our own fare check of 27 September 2026. Fees and rules can change, so confirm with Pakistan Railways before you cancel.
