Carry Zamzam Water Home to Pakistan: PIA and Saudia 5 Litre Rules

Carry Zamzam water home to Pakistan: one 5 litre carton on PIA and Saudia, the free Madinah carton, the extra piece fee, and why bottles in bags are stopped.

You can carry Zamzam water home to Pakistan as one sealed 5 litre carton, checked in as baggage. PIA lists "Zam Zam (05 Ltr)" in its free baggage allowance. Saudia accepts one carton per passenger. Zamzam in your own bottles, or packed inside a suitcase, is not accepted on Saudia.

We read both airlines' own baggage pages on 2 October 2026. The rules are short, but the small print catches people at the check-in desk, usually on the last day of an Umrah trip when there is no time to fix it.

Pakistani pilgrims can bring one 5 litre Zamzam carton on PIA and Saudia

Both PIA and Saudia allow one Zamzam container of up to 5 litres per passenger as checked baggage. The difference is how they count it. PIA lists it as a free item. Saudia gives it free from Madinah and counts it inside your allowance from other airports.

That 5 litre figure is the one that matters. A family of four can bring four cartons, one each, as long as each person has their own ticket. An infant on a lap ticket is a separate case, so ask the airline before you buy an extra carton for a baby.

The carton is the sealed type sold for this purpose, not a jerry can you fill yourself. Saudia's page names the Sogia factory for the free carton from Madinah.

PIA and Saudia Zamzam water rules compared for Pakistani pilgrims flying home

PIA lists 5 litres of Zamzam in its free baggage allowance

PIA's baggage guide puts "Zam Zam (05 Ltr)" in a free allowance list with a laptop, a baby push chair, a wheelchair and sports kits. The same line adds "subject to the operator's rule", so the check-in desk still has the final word.

The next sentence on PIA's page is the one to read twice. Except on flights to the USA and Canada, a passenger carrying an extra piece within the free allowance must pay for a 4 kg excess baggage ticket to have it accepted. PIA's representative can waive this, but only at their discretion.

So a carton that counts as an extra piece may cost you a small fee. PIA also says your real allowance, pieces and weight, is the one printed on your ticket. Check your ticket before you pack, not at the airport.

The cabin rules are separate. PIA allows one cabin bag of up to 7 kg, with a total size of 115 cm. A 5 litre carton does not belong in it.

Saudia gives a free carton from Madinah and counts it in your bags elsewhere

Saudia gives every passenger leaving Madinah airport one free Zamzam carton of up to 5 litres, from the Sogia factory, as checked baggage. From other Saudi airports, one carton is allowed but counts inside your free checked allowance, and extra weight is charged.

Saudia's page names Prince Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Airport in Madinah for the free carton. For other domestic airports, its wording excludes King Abdulaziz International Airport Terminal 1 in Jeddah, and it does not say what applies there instead.

That gap matters because Jeddah is where many Pakistani pilgrims fly home from. If you leave from Jeddah Terminal 1 on Saudia, ask the airline at least a day before the flight how your Zamzam carton will be handled. Do not assume it is free.

Pilgrims who end their trip in Madinah have the easiest time. The free carton is the clearest rule on Saudia's page.

Zamzam bottles in your suitcase or cabin bag get stopped

Saudia's rules say Zamzam water bottles are not permitted inside checked baggage, for safety reasons. In the cabin, liquids above the permitted limit, typically 100 ml a container, are not allowed. So the sealed carton is the only safe way to bring Zamzam.

The bottle rule is the one that ruins a packed suitcase. People slip two or three small bottles between clothes as gifts. If the bag is opened at screening, the bottles come out, and the bag may miss the flight while that happens.

Leaking is the other risk. Even a sealed bottle can split in the hold, and 1 litre of water soaks everything around it.

Pack Zamzam for the flight home in five steps

Buy one sealed carton per passenger, keep it out of your suitcase, check your ticket allowance, and hand the carton in at check-in as its own piece. Keep the baggage tag receipt for every carton until you collect them in Pakistan.

  1. Read your ticket. Note your checked pieces and weight. PIA says the ticket allowance is what counts.
  2. Buy one sealed carton each. Up to 5 litres per passenger. Do not fill your own containers.
  3. Keep it separate. Do not put Zamzam bottles inside your suitcase or cabin bag.
  4. Ask about Jeddah Terminal 1. If you fly Saudia from there, confirm the Zamzam rule before the flight day.
  5. Keep the tag receipt. A carton is checked baggage. If it does not arrive, you claim it like any other bag.

If a carton goes missing or arrives crushed, the same rules apply as for a suitcase. The steps to claim lost or damaged baggage at a Pakistani airport start at the belt, before you leave the hall.

Other airlines flying Saudi Arabia to Pakistan set their own Zamzam rules

Each airline sets its own Zamzam rule. We could read only PIA's and Saudia's official pages. The other carriers' sites blocked automated access when we checked, so we do not quote their limits. Ask your airline directly, by phone or at its counter.

Saudi budget airlines and Pakistani private airlines both fly the Jeddah and Madinah routes. Their fares often come with smaller bag allowances, and a 5 kg carton can push you over. Ask two questions: is Zamzam free, and does it count as an extra piece?

Plan the rest of the bags with the same care. Lithium batteries follow separate rules, and the power bank rules on flights from Pakistan apply on the way back too. Before you go, the Umrah visa from Pakistan sets the dates your return flight must fit.

Arriving for Umrah, the options from the airport are set out in Jeddah airport to Makkah.

Common questions

How much Zamzam water can I bring to Pakistan on PIA?

One 5 litre carton. PIA lists "Zam Zam (05 Ltr)" in its free allowance, subject to the operator's rule, and may charge a 4 kg excess ticket for an extra piece.

Is Zamzam water free on Saudia?

From Madinah airport, yes: one carton of up to 5 litres. From other Saudi airports it counts inside your free checked allowance.

Can I put Zamzam bottles in my suitcase?

Not on Saudia. Its rules say Zamzam bottles are not permitted inside checked baggage. Use the sealed carton.

Can I carry Zamzam in my hand luggage?

Only in small amounts within the liquid limit, typically 100 ml a container. A 5 litre carton must be checked in.

Does a baby get a Zamzam allowance?

Neither airline's page answers this for infants. Ask the airline before you buy a carton for a child on a lap ticket.

How we verified this

What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.

Last checked on 2 October 2026. PIA's rules are from its baggage guide: the free allowance line, the 4 kg excess ticket for an extra piece and the 7 kg cabin bag. Saudia's rules are from its permitted items page and its carry-on page. Saudia's page does not say what applies at Jeddah Terminal 1. We could not read other airlines' pages, so their rules are not stated here.
