How to Check Car Registration in Punjab
The old MTMIS address no longer exists. The working portal, the number formats it accepts, and what to check before buying a used car.
Checking a vehicle's registration in Punjab is free, takes under a minute, and needs nothing but the number plate.
One thing first, because it wastes a lot of people's time. The old MTMIS web address no longer exists. We tested it and the domain does not resolve at all. The working portal is:
mtmis.excise.punjab.gov.pk
We opened it and it is live. If a guide, a forum post or a WhatsApp message sends you to an MTMIS address without "excise" in it, that is why nothing loaded.
How to check
- Open mtmis.excise.punjab.gov.pk and choose Vehicle Verification.
- Enter the registration number. There is no login, no account and no fee.
- Read the result against the vehicle itself, not against what the seller told you.
The same portal also carries Application Tracking, Vehicle Service, Vanity Vehicle Verification, an e-Registration Card section and Number Plate Information.
If the search returns nothing, it is usually the format
This is the most common failure and it almost never means the car is unregistered. The portal is particular about how the number is typed, and it says so on the page itself:
"To check the vehicle information please enter a valid number. You can try Different Combinations e.g; lxz 123 lxz 0123 lxz 1111 lxz-07-1111"

Work through all four before concluding anything. If none of them return a record, the likeliest explanation is that the vehicle is registered in another province, in which case you need that province's system rather than Punjab's.
What to match before buying a used car
The point of verification is not to see a record. It is to find the places where the record and the car disagree.
- Engine and chassis numbers. Read them off the vehicle, not off the file the seller hands you. This is the check that catches the serious problems.
- Make, model and year of first registration. A car described as a 2019 that first registered in 2016 is a different car commercially.
- Owner name against the seller's CNIC. If the seller is not the registered owner, ask who is and why.
- Outstanding token tax. Unpaid dues follow the vehicle, not the person who ran them up.
- Province. A vehicle registered elsewhere carries a transfer process you may not be expecting.
If the record and the vehicle do not match on the engine or chassis number, stop. That is not a paperwork problem to sort out later.
What the portal will not tell you
Being clear about the limits matters as much as the steps.
- It is not an accident or insurance history. Pakistan has no equivalent of a full vehicle history report.
- It is not a theft check on its own. A clean record is not proof the car is not stolen, though a mismatch is a strong warning.
- It does not value the car.
- It reflects the record, not reality. If a transfer was never filed, the portal will still show the previous owner, which is exactly the situation you want to discover before paying.
If the record shows the wrong details
Wrong information on the record is common and it is not always a problem with the car. Most cases fall into three groups.
- A transfer was never filed. The car changed hands but the paperwork did not, so the portal still shows an earlier owner. This is the seller's problem to fix before you pay, not yours to inherit.
- A data entry error at registration. A transposed digit in the engine or chassis number. Correctable, but it needs an Excise office visit with the vehicle and its documents.
- The record has not caught up. A recent transfer or a recent payment can take time to appear.
In all three cases the fix runs through an Excise and Taxation office in the district where the vehicle is registered, and you will need the original registration book, your CNIC and the vehicle itself for physical inspection. Do not buy a car on a promise that the record will be corrected later.
Biometric verification is a separate system
Excise also runs bioverification-excise.punjab.gov.pk. We opened it, and it is a login for organisational registration for NADRA biometric verification, not a public lookup. If you are an individual checking a car, it is not the tool you want.
What to do after the check
