Short answer: A foreign tourist in Pakistan can extend a visa at a Regional Passport Office up to a total of 6 months, including the first visa. Business visitors can get one year there. DGIP's pages print two different sets of extension limits, so ask the office which one it applies.

A Canadian visitor of Pakistani origin is enjoying his stay in Lahore. His 3 month visa ends in ten days, and he wants one more month. He asks a relative where to go. The answer is the Regional Passport Office, and it is better to go early than late.

We read two pages from the Directorate General of Immigration and Passports (DGIP) on 13 October 2026: the visa categories page, last modified 14 September 2026, and the visa policy page, last modified 4 October 2023. The policy page carries two lists of extension rules that do not match.

Tourist extensions stop at 6 months in total

DGIP says Regional Passport Offices (RPOs) can extend a tourist visa up to a maximum of 6 months, counting the initial visa period. The policy page words it as an extension of three months, for a total of six months, with one or two re-entries.

The categories page adds one more rule. An RPO can condone overstay of up to 15 days, if the visitor pays a minimum of US$10. For tourist areas, the Deputy Commissioners of Gilgit and Skardu can allow a 3 month extension with one re-entry, charging fees as per policy.

Business visitors get a longer extension

For a business visa, the categories page says RPOs in Islamabad and the provincial capitals can extend it by one year, if the visitor shows business papers. These can be investment, export or import records for the last year, a registration letter in the case of hotel business, or a chamber letter, partnership deed or article of association.

The policy page prints two different lines. One says extension up to six months with two re-entries, for the businessman and family. The other says up to one year with multiple entries. We cannot tell which is current. Beyond one year, the Ministry of Interior decides.

Students and Pakistan-origin visitors follow their own lines

Foreign students on a study visa get extension in stay on a yearly basis. The policy page says one re-entry. A foreigner of Pakistan origin, with a spouse and dependent children (except Indian nationals), gets six months or one year with multiple entries, depending on which line you read.

The family visit rules in the guide to the family visit visa for foreign spouses and Pakistan-origin relatives say RPOs may extend for one year with multiple entries and up to 5 years without entries. Study visas also need an NOC before the first entry, so keep your papers ready.

Apply for the extension in five steps

The categories page names a visa extension form, "Visa Application Form for Extension in Stay", for everyone except Indian nationals. These steps are our summary of what the pages say, so confirm the documents with your RPO.

  1. Download the extension form from the DGIP visa pages.
  2. Gather your passport, current visa and the papers for your visa type.
  3. Visit the Regional Passport Office in Islamabad, Lahore, Peshawar, Quetta or Karachi.
  4. Pay the fee in the bank. DGIP says never give cash to the staff.
  5. Collect the extension, and check the dates on the stamp.

Fees and late penalties

DGIP's fee page says an extension costs US$20 unless a country is listed otherwise. That page is dated 4 October 2023, so treat the figure as reported. The policy page also says overstay charges are not condoned. The only grace we found is the 15 day tourist rule above.

The surcharges for staying past the visa run from nothing for two weeks to US$400 a year, as laid out in the page on the overstay surcharge for foreigners. Indian nationals pay Rs 40 a day instead. Do not let the visa lapse if you can help it.

Common questions

Where do I extend a Pakistan visa?

At a Regional Passport Office. DGIP lists offices in Islamabad, Lahore, Peshawar, Quetta and Karachi.

How long can a tourist stay in total?

Up to 6 months including the first visa period, according to DGIP.

What does an extension cost?

The fee page says US$20 unless stated otherwise, but that page dates from October 2023. Confirm it at the office.

Can I extend a visa after it expires?

Overstay is charged and DGIP says there is no condonation, except 15 days for tourists with a minimum US$10. Apply before expiry.

Do Indian nationals use the same form?

No. DGIP's form is for everyone except Indian nationals, who are dealt with by a separate wing of the Ministry of Interior.

How we verified this

What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.

Last checked on 13 October 2026. We read the DGIP visa categories page, its visa policy page and the fee page. The policy page lists two sets of extension limits and does not say which is current. We did not visit an RPO.
