How to Fix a Wrong Family Registration Certificate in Pakistan: Ex-Spouse, Missing Child, Stepchildren

Fix a wrong FRC in Pakistan: NADRA says the certificate cannot be edited, so update your CNIC record for an ex-spouse, a missing spouse or a child born abroad.

Short answer: You cannot edit a Family Registration Certificate (FRC) directly. NADRA says any correction must be made in the underlying record. If an ex-spouse still shows, submit divorce papers and update your CNIC. If a spouse or child is missing, update marital status or the child's identity record first.

An FRC with a wrong name on it can stop a visa, an inheritance claim or a school admission. The mistake is rarely on the certificate itself. It sits in the NADRA record behind it.

We read NADRA's FAQ on the Family Registration Certificate and its fee page on 13 October 2026. This guide turns those answers into a fix list. We did not apply for an FRC ourselves.

The FRC copies the NADRA record and cannot be edited

NADRA says FRC data cannot be modified on its own. Any correction must be made in the underlying NADRA record. The FRC is then issued again. The certificate itself is not cancelled, and it does not expire, but a new one is needed when a family member's record changes.

The FRC also does not prove Pakistani nationality. NADRA says it only reflects family data in its record. For how to apply, read how to get a Family Registration Certificate.

Why an FRC cannot be edited and must follow the NADRA record

An ex-spouse appears when marital status is not updated

NADRA says a divorced person's ex-spouse still shows when the marital status was never updated. The fix is to submit divorce papers and request a modification of the CNIC record. Then apply for a fresh FRC.

  1. Get your divorce paper. Our page on the NADRA divorce certificate explains how.
  2. Apply for a CNIC modification and attach the divorce documents.
  3. Wait for the record to change. Track it as shown in the NADRA tracking guide.
  4. Apply for a new FRC once the record shows the correct status.

A missing spouse needs a linked record

If you apply for an FRC by marriage and your spouse does not appear, NADRA says you must update your marital status on your CNIC and make sure the spouse's identity record is properly linked in the system. Only then can a complete FRC be issued.

For the marriage update, see updating a CNIC after marriage. A marriage certificate from the Union Council, Cantonment Board or CDA is mandatory for that update.

Children and stepchildren follow set rules

NADRA says all real children of all spouses appear in an FRC, but stepchildren do not. A child born abroad will not appear until the child holds an identity document in the NADRA system, which means a CRC, a juvenile card or a NICOP.

For a child's record, read the B-Form requirements and the CRC and juvenile card validity table. For an overseas child, see how to apply for a NICOP online.

Check every name on the new certificate when it arrives. A spelling error in one member's record will repeat on the FRC, and fixing it means another modification.

Someone married more than once appears according to the current family links in the database, based on updated marital status and linked children.

A foreign spouse shows only with a valid POC

If a Pakistani citizen marries a foreign national, NADRA says the spouse appears on the FRC only if the spouse holds a valid Pakistan Origin Card and the record is updated. Without it, the certificate will show no foreign spouse.

The steps and fee are in how to apply for a Pakistan Origin Card. If you are not sure who is eligible, see NADRA's answers on special CNIC cases.

Deceased members and fees

Keep the old FRC until the new one arrives. An office may ask to see both, and the new one will carry the corrected family links.

A deceased family member can still appear on an FRC if their record exists and is updated in the NADRA database. To mark a death, see how to cancel a CNIC after a death.

NADRA's fee page lists an FRC at Rs 1,000 for one category (alpha, beta or gamma) and Rs 2,000 for both, on executive priority, in one day. A person may hold more than one type of FRC, for example by birth, by marriage or by guardian, depending on the purpose.

Common questions

Can I correct a mistake directly on my FRC?

No. NADRA says the correction must be made in the underlying record, and then a new FRC is issued.

Why does my ex-wife or ex-husband still show on my FRC?

Your marital status was not updated. Submit divorce papers and request a CNIC modification.

Do stepchildren appear on an FRC?

No. NADRA says all real children from all spouses appear, but stepchildren are not included.

Does an FRC expire?

No. A new FRC is needed only when the record of a family member changes.

Is an FRC proof of Pakistani nationality?

No. NADRA says it only reflects the family data in its record.

Why is my child born abroad missing?

The child needs a CRC, juvenile card or NICOP in the NADRA system before appearing in the FRC.

How we verified this

What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.

Last checked on 13 October 2026, Pakistan time. We read the FRC answers on NADRA's FRC page and the fee structure page. We did not apply for a corrected FRC, and NADRA does not list the documents for each fix.
