Cancelling a NADRA identity record after a death

To cancel a CNIC after a death, a close blood relative (spouse, child, parent or sibling) takes the union council death certificate and the deceased's CNIC number to any NADRA centre, or applies in the PakID app. It is free and NADRA processes it in 1 day. There is no time limit, so a death from years ago can still be recorded.

When somebody dies, their NADRA record does not close by itself. Until it is cancelled, NADRA still shows the person as a living family member, and inheritance, pensions and bank matters run into that wrong record. We read NADRA's cancellation certificate page, its FAQ and its fee structure on 8 November 2026.

Cancellation after a death costs nothing

NADRA cancellation fee and processing time after a death
ServiceFeeTime
CNIC or CRC (B-Form) cancellation after a deathFree1 day
NICOP cancellation after a deathUSD 01 day
POC cancellation after a deathUSD 252 days

Most NADRA services have normal, urgent and executive tiers. Cancellation after a death has one tier, because the standard service already takes a day. If a centre asks you for a fee for a CNIC, CRC or NICOP cancellation, the fee schedule says free. NADRA issues a Cancellation Certificate under Section 17(3) of the NADRA Ordinance 2000.

NADRA's FAQ settles who can apply and what to bring

QuestionNADRA's answer
Who can apply?Only immediate blood relatives such as the spouse, children, parents or a sibling. A distant relative cannot
Is a death certificate needed?Yes. A death certificate from the union council, cantonment board or CDA is mandatory
The original CNIC is lostAllowed with a verified death certificate and the deceased's CNIC number
The death was 10 to 20 years agoAllowed. There is no time limit, but a valid death certificate is needed
The CNIC expired before the deathCancellation is still needed to mark the person deceased in NADRA's database
Must I apply where the death happened? No. Any NADRA centre or the PakID app
The person died abroadAllowed with the foreign death certificate from that country's authority
The person had duplicate CNIC recordsVisit the NADRA Zonal Office with all documents. NADRA resolves the duplicate first

Do the paperwork in this order

The order of documents after a death in Pakistan
  1. Register the death with the union council, cantonment board or CDA. This comes first, because NADRA will not cancel without the certificate.
  2. Collect the death certificate.
  3. Apply to NADRA for cancellation at any centre or in PakID. Free, 1 day.
  4. Check the family record now shows the person as deceased.
  5. Then start the succession application, set out in our succession certificate guide.

The union council and NADRA are separate offices. Registering a death with the council does not cancel the NADRA record. Many records stay open for years because families assume it does.

Get the death certificate first, and do it quickly

The death certificate has its own deadlines. In Punjab, the e-Khidmat page charges Rs 200 within 60 days of the death and says all cases after 60 days must go through a court. Its document list includes Form B, the hospital death slip if the death was in hospital, the deceased's CNIC, the applicant's CNIC, the graveyard burial slip, affidavits and witnesses' CNICs. The full route is in the Punjab death certificate guide.

In other areas, see Islamabad birth and death certificates, registering a death in KP, or the general union council death certificate process.

Why an uncancelled record delays inheritance

An open record blocks inheritance and benefits

NADRA checks legal heirs against the family record when it issues a succession certificate. If the record still lists the person as alive, the check runs on the wrong list. A Family Registration Certificate prints what the record holds, so it can show the error too. Neither document fixes the record. The cancellation does.

Mobile SIMs registered on the deceased's CNIC are also affected once the record is cancelled. The PTA rules are in SIM blocking after a CNIC is cancelled. If the deceased was a BISP beneficiary, the next of kin route is in claiming BISP Kafaalat after a death.

If the person lived abroad

NICOP cancellation after a death is free and takes 1 day on NADRA's schedule. NADRA's FAQ says the foreign death certificate from the authority of that country is accepted. Ask the Pakistani mission whether it needs attestation first. Which card applies to whom is in the NICOP and POC guide. If the person held a POC instead, cancellation costs USD 25.

Three beliefs keep this step waiting

  • "It costs money." It does not. The published fee is zero.
  • "There is no hurry." There usually is. Inheritance, pensions and banks all reach a record that still says the person is alive.
  • "The union council did it." The council registers the death. NADRA cancels the record. They are two separate acts.

Questions readers are asking

How much does it cost to cancel a CNIC after a death?

Nothing. NADRA's fee schedule lists cancellation due to death at zero, processed in 1 day.

Who can apply for the cancellation?

An immediate blood relative: the spouse, a child, a parent or a sibling. NADRA's FAQ says a distant relative cannot.

What documents do I need?

A death certificate from the union council, cantonment board or CDA, and the deceased's CNIC number. The original card is not needed if it is lost.

Is there a time limit?

No. NADRA says there is no time limit, even for a death 10 to 20 years ago, but the death certificate is still needed.

Can I apply online?

Yes. NADRA says cancellation can be processed at any NADRA centre or through the PakID app.

What about somebody who died abroad?

NICOP cancellation is free. NADRA accepts the foreign death certificate issued by that country's authority.

Can a child's B-Form be cancelled the same way?

Yes. The schedule lists CNIC and CRC cancellation together, free and in 1 day.
