Fulbright Scholar Program 2027 Open for Pakistani Academics, Apply by 28 October
USEFP is taking Fulbright Scholar 2027 applications from Pakistani academics until 28 October. See what is funded, who is ruled out and what to prepare now.

Applications for the Fulbright Scholar Program 2027 close on 28 October 2026. The programme pays for up to 10 months of teaching or research at a US university, and it is open to Pakistani academics with a PhD or terminal degree.
The Higher Education Commission and the United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan, known as USEFP, announced the call on 8 October 2026. We read the programme page on the USEFP website the same day and it showed the status as open.
The Fulbright Scholar Program funds up to 10 months in the United States
USEFP says the award funds up to 10 months of lecturing, post-doctoral research, or a mix of both, at a US college or university. It also covers one fully funded dependent. The grant pays airfare, a living stipend, health insurance and an incidental research allowance.
USEFP also says it will help with the visa process. The page lists the cycle as tentatively announced in summer, with grantees starting in the fall of the following year.
| Item | What USEFP states |
|---|---|
| Deadline | 28 October 2026 |
| Length | Up to 10 months |
| Funded | Airfare, living stipend, health insurance, research allowance |
| Dependents | One accompanying dependent is fully covered |
| Language test | No English test required |
Only PhD holders and terminal degree holders can apply
Applicants need a PhD or terminal degree, strong written and spoken English, and a clear proposal. Every discipline is welcome except clinical medicine. USEFP says the proposal is the most important single part of the application.
The announcement says applicants must be Pakistani citizens living and working in Pakistan when they apply. Those who want to lecture must also show they can teach in a university.
Several groups are ruled out before you start
USEFP lists who cannot apply. These include anyone who finished a PhD within the last two years, and anyone who spent long-term time in the United States for research or study in the last five years. Read this list before you write a word.
- People with dual US and Pakistani nationality.
- People with a spouse, parent or child over 18 who is a US citizen or permanent resident.
- Employees and dependents of USEFP or the US Department of State.
- People already studying in the US, or on a work or residence visa in any country.
Read that fourth line twice. A Pakistani academic on a work visa in the Gulf is not eligible, even though he is a Pakistani citizen.
A complete application has three parts
A full application has the application form, three reference letters and at least one invitation letter from a US university. It must be submitted online, because USEFP does not accept paper applications. Incomplete files are not considered.
The invitation letter is the slowest part. USEFP says you need at least one when you apply, so start writing to US departments now. Three weeks is not much time.
A good invitation letter names the department, the person who will host you, and the work you plan to do there. A short, polite email with your CV and a one-page summary of your proposal gives a busy professor something to answer. Send it to more than one department, because replies can be slow and some will say no.
A plan for the 20 days that are left
You have about 20 days from 8 October. Start with the invitation letter, then ask referees early, then write the proposal around what you will do in the US and how it connects to your work in Pakistan.
- Check the ineligibility list on the USEFP page, line by line.
- Write to one or more US departments for an invitation letter.
- Ask three referees who know your work, and give them the deadline.
- Write a proposal that links the US stay to your work in Pakistan.
- Submit online well before 28 October.
This call is for working academics. Students who want to study in the US have different programmes, and our guide to applying for the Fulbright scholarship from Pakistan covers that route. Other dates falling this month are in our list of scholarship deadlines in Pakistan this October.
