Pakistani students apply for the Gates Cambridge Scholarship for 2027 entry in the international round. The deadline is 8 December 2026 or 6 January 2027, depending on your Cambridge course. The 14 October 2026 date you may have seen is only for US citizens living in the United States.

We read the scholarship's own timeline, eligibility and FAQ pages on gatescambridge.org, and the University of Cambridge postgraduate pages, on 1 October 2026. Applications for 2027-28 entry opened on 11 September 2026. You apply through one Cambridge form for both the course and the scholarship. There is no separate Gates form.

Gates Cambridge offers around 70 full-cost scholarships a year to students from outside the UK. So yes, it is very competitive. But a Pakistani applicant is judged on exactly the same terms as anyone else.

Gates Cambridge deadlines for Pakistani applicants

For 2027 entry, Pakistani applicants are in the international round. Your deadline is the "Course Funding Deadline" shown on your course's page in Cambridge's Course Directory. It is either 8 December 2026 or 6 January 2027, at 11:59 pm UK time, with every document submitted.

UK time is five hours behind Pakistan in December and January. So 11:59 pm in Cambridge is 4:59 am the next morning in Karachi or Lahore. Don't leave it to the last night anyway. Your referees must also submit by the same deadline, and they are the part you cannot control.

What the Gates Cambridge Scholarship covers

A Gates Cambridge Scholarship pays the full cost of studying at Cambridge. That means the University Composition Fee, a living allowance of £23,152 for 12 months at the 2026-27 rate, one economy airfare each way, and your visa and Immigration Health Surcharge costs.

The living allowance is for a single student and is cut pro rata for courses shorter than 12 months. For a PhD it runs for up to four years. The Trust also considers extra money on a case-by-case basis:

  • Academic development funding: from up to £750 to up to £4,000, depending on course length, for conferences and courses.
  • Dependent Children Allowance: up to £12,793 a year for one child, or up to £18,244 for two or more. There is no money for a partner.
  • Fieldwork: you may keep your normal allowance while on PhD fieldwork.
  • Maternity or paternity: up to six months' break on your allowance.
  • Hardship funding for problems you could not have foreseen.

It does not pay bench fees or scientific equipment. If you have a salary or another big scholarship, the Trust may cut or stop the living allowance. Tell them early.

Who is eligible for Gates Cambridge from Pakistan

Any citizen of a country outside the United Kingdom can apply, so every Pakistani citizen qualifies on nationality. You must be applying for a full-time or part-time PhD, a full-time MLitt, or a full-time one-year postgraduate course such as an MPhil, MRes or LLM.

These courses are not considered: any undergraduate degree, MASt, MSt, PGCert, PGDip, MBA, Executive MBA, MFin, PGCE, the Business Doctorate and a few medical degrees. Part-time master's degrees are out too.

There is no minimum GPA. A second master's degree does not rule you out, but you must justify it. Dual UK and Pakistani citizens can apply. If you have already started a Cambridge PhD, you cannot apply to fund the rest of it.

How to apply through the Cambridge graduate application

You apply on the University of Cambridge's Graduate Application Portal. Complete the course and College section, then tick Gates Cambridge in the funding section and answer its four questions. PhD applicants also need a research proposal. A separate Gates Cambridge reference is required.

  1. Choose an eligible course in Cambridge's Course Directory and note its Course Funding Deadline.
  2. Start the application on the Graduate Application Portal at postgraduate.study.cam.ac.uk.
  3. Fill in the admission section: your academic record, two academic references and your plans.
  4. Open the funding section and complete the Gates Cambridge part.
  5. Answer the four questions. They ask about academic excellence and your choice of course (about 200 words each, up to 1,400 characters), and your commitment to improving others' lives and your leadership (about 300 words each, up to 2,100 characters).
  6. Arrange the Gates Cambridge reference from someone who knows your character and can rank you against a group.
  7. Pay the application fee and submit before your deadline. You cannot edit the form after you submit.

Cambridge's application fee is £85 per application for most postgraduate courses, and £20 per year of entry for doctoral courses. Pakistan is not on Cambridge's list of countries that get an automatic fee waiver, and Gates Cambridge does not pay this fee.

How Gates Cambridge picks its scholars

Selection has two stages. First, your Cambridge department decides whether to nominate you. Only a small share of applicants get this far. Nominated candidates then face a 25 to 30 minute interview, in person or online, and scholars are chosen after it.

Four criteria count at every stage: outstanding intellectual ability, reasons for choosing the course, a commitment to improving the lives of others, and leadership potential. The process is needs-blind. Your family's money plays no part.

The interview panels are split into Arts, Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences and Social Sciences. Expect questions on why Cambridge, why this course, and how it links to your career. Gates Cambridge gives no feedback to unsuccessful applicants. You may apply again in a later year without penalty.

English test, other funding and the UK visa

Gates Cambridge sets no English test of its own, but the University does. Most Pakistani applicants will need an IELTS or similar score unless they meet Cambridge's exemption rules. A Gates award can be held alongside another scholarship, provided the money is not paid twice.

Book the test early, because a missing score can hold up your course offer. The current IELTS fee in Pakistan is worth checking before you budget. Cambridge says TOEFL tests taken after 21 January 2026 need an extra online check by its Language Centre.

Many strong applicants also apply for Chevening or a Commonwealth scholarship in the same year. That's sensible. If you win, the Gates award pays your visa costs, but the UK student visa process is still yours to complete.

Common questions

Is the Gates Cambridge deadline 14 October 2026 for Pakistanis?

No. 14 October 2026 is only for US citizens living in the US. Pakistani applicants have 8 December 2026 or 6 January 2027, depending on the course.

Can I get Gates Cambridge for a bachelor's degree?

No. It funds only postgraduate study: a PhD, an MLitt or an eligible full-time one-year course.

How much is the Gates Cambridge living allowance?

£23,152 for 12 months at the 2026-27 rate, for a single student. Shorter courses get a pro rata amount.

Do I need a supervisor before I apply?

Gates Cambridge does not require a named supervisor on the form. But its criteria page says PhD applicants, and most research MPhil applicants, will need to contact a potential supervisor.

How many courses can I apply to?

The FAQ says up to seven applications in a cycle, each with its own Gates funding section.

Is there a separate Gates Cambridge application fee?

No. You pay only Cambridge's own application fee, which is £85 for most master's courses and £20 for doctoral courses.

How we verified this

What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.

We read the Gates Cambridge timeline, eligibility, how to apply, criteria, selection, FAQ and the scholarship pages, and the University of Cambridge's postgraduate pages on the application fee, fee waivers and English requirements, on 1 October 2026.
