Short answer: IBCC accepts the US High School Diploma for SSC and HSSC equivalence, but only from an accredited school and with a sealed four-year transcript. Students in Pakistan must also pass Urdu, Islamiyat and Pakistan Studies at O or SSC level. Apply on the IBCC equivalence portal.

A family moves home from Houston or Dubai, or a child studies at an American curriculum school in Lahore. The diploma is real. Pakistani universities and boards still ask for a paper from IBCC that turns it into SSC and HSSC.

IBCC has a dedicated page for this qualification. We read it in full, along with its pages on the general requirements and the three ways to apply.

IBCC grants SSC and HSSC equivalence for the US diploma

IBCC says the American High School Diploma, typically grades 9 to 12 from an accredited institution, is accepted for equivalence of SSC and HSSC. SSC is based on grades 9 and 10. HSSC is based on grades 11 and 12, with the required credits for graduation.

The diploma must come from an institution accredited by a recognised regional accrediting authority in the United States. The transcript must show the required number of credits or half credits of the total graduation requirement.

Students in Pakistan must also pass three national subjects

For students who studied the US diploma from Pakistan, IBCC adds a condition. They must pass Urdu, Islamiyat and Pakistan Studies at O or SSC level, along with the other subject requirements. Those at American schools in Pakistan also need two Advanced Placement courses for HSSC.

The page words it for two cases. A student completing grades 9 to 10 from Pakistan must pass the three subjects at O or SSC level. A student completing grades 9 to 12 with a diploma from an American school in Pakistan must also pass two Advanced Placement courses from College Board USA.

This is the part families miss. A child can finish the diploma on time and still be unable to get equivalence, because the three national subjects were never sat. Plan those papers early.

We read the exemption note for foreign nationals only on the O and A Level notification, not on the US diploma page, so we do not apply it here. Ask IBCC if you hold a foreign passport.

The documents IBCC asks for

IBCC's page lists the original diploma, an official consolidated four-year transcript sealed in an envelope, proof of the school's accreditation, a school profile and identity papers. Documents not in English or Urdu need a certified translation from the embassy or NUML.

  1. The original High School Diploma.
  2. The grades 9 to 12 official consolidated transcript, signed, embossed and sealed by the school, in an envelope to be opened by an IBCC officer.
  3. A separate original transcript from each school, if you attended more than one, with the accreditation copy of each.
  4. An attested copy of the school's certificate of accreditation from the US accrediting association or state education department.
  5. The school profile or course description guide.
  6. An attested copy of the CNIC of the parent or guardian, and an attested passport copy with the visa page and proof of stay abroad, if you studied abroad.
  7. Original SSC and HSSC part I from the Pakistani board, if prior learning came from a Pakistani board.
  8. Advanced Placement score reports from College Board, if you took AP courses in addition.

The general requirements page adds that applicants must submit the complete academic record from grade 9 to 12, a syllabus copy for new qualifications, and certified translations if the papers are not in English or Urdu. Original diplomas are returned, but transcripts are kept on record.

Three ways to apply: walk-in, courier or online

IBCC's submission modes page lists three routes. You choose one on the online application form: walk-in by appointment at an IBCC centre, courier through Pakistan Post, Leopard, M&P or TCS, or online. Fees are paid through 1Bill, mobile banking apps or a UBL challan.

For a walk-in you pick a centre among Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, Bahawalpur, Quetta and Peshawar, and a date with an open slot. For courier, you attach the documents to the application and post it to IBCC. The page names no fee figure for applicants, so we do not state one. Read the portal screen for the amount.

Plan the timing against admission dates

Equivalence can take time, and courier adds days. Start before the university's last date, ask for the equivalence receipt, and keep your application ID. Many admission offices accept an application receipt only as a temporary step.

We did not read a processing time on the IBCC pages, so we will not promise one. Ask IBCC's help desk and plan with a margin. Once you hold a QR-coded certificate, the rule in checking an IBCC QR certificate without extra attestation applies.

Students who hold both US and British qualifications should handle each qualification separately. IBCC has distinct pages for British O and A Levels, the International Baccalaureate and Australian qualifications.
