Harry Kane Wins the Ballon d'Or 2026, Putellas Takes the Women's Award
Harry Kane won the Ballon d'Or 2026 in London, the first English winner since 2001. Alexia Putellas won the women's award. See every winner and our wrong pick.
Harry Kane has won the Ballon d'Or 2026. The Bayern Munich and England striker was named the best men's player in the world on stage at the London Palladium on Monday night, early Tuesday 27 October in Pakistan. Kane beat Lamine Yamal and Kylian Mbappé to the award. He is the first English player to win it since Michael Owen in 2001.
Alexia Putellas of Barcelona won the women's Ballon d'Or for the third time. Spain and Barcelona took most of the other trophies of the night. We list every winner below.
The ceremony started about 45 minutes late because of traffic in London. It began at about 1:45 am PKT, not 1:00 am, so the main award came well after the 2:46 am slot in our guide to watching the Ballon d'Or in Pakistan.
Harry Kane Is the First Englishman to Win Since 2001
Kane is 33. He had the best scoring season of his career with Bayern in 2025-26, and he also won the Gerd Müller Trophy for the top scorer on the same night. That made him the only player to take two individual trophies at the ceremony.
Before Kane, the last English winner was Michael Owen of Liverpool in 2001. Spain won the 2026 World Cup, and many expected a Spanish player to win.
Voting covered the 2025-26 season, from 3 August 2025 to 19 July 2026, the day of the World Cup final. Each voting journalist picked a top ten from a shortlist of 30 players.

Spain's World Cup winners took the young player, goalkeeper and coach awards. Barcelona's women's team took four trophies: the Ballon d'Or, young player, goalkeeper and Club of the Year.
Why Kane Won, and Where Our Prediction Went Wrong
Before the ceremony, our pick was Lamine Yamal, by a small margin, with Rodri as an outside pick. We were wrong. We said voters would weigh the World Cup most, and Yamal had won it with Spain. The voters put Kane's goals first.
Here is what likely decided it.
- Goals. Kane scored more than 60 goals for club and country in the voting season, by every count we have seen. Reports differ on the exact total depending on which matches are included.
- Trophies with Bayern. Kane reportedly won the Bundesliga and the German Cup with Bayern in the voting season.
- A split Spanish vote. Spain had several strong candidates, including Yamal, Rodri, who won the World Cup Golden Ball, and Fabián Ruiz. Votes for the World Cup winners were shared out.
Yamal still left with the Kopa Trophy for the best young player, his third. At 19, he will have more chances at the main award.

What We Checked
We followed the ceremony through live reports from the London Palladium. We confirmed Kane's win in two separate live reports from the ceremony, published after the award was handed over. We confirmed Alexia Putellas and the other category winners in two separate results lists. DAZN, which held the streaming rights, had listed the start time and the order of the awards before the show.
Earlier in the evening, the official Ballon d'Or website briefly published several articles naming different winners, including Kane, Yamal and Mbappé. These were drafts prepared in advance and were not the result. We waited for reports from the room before publishing. The official ballondor.com site refused our requests, so we could not read its own results page. The full men's ranking from 2nd to 10th had not been published in a form we could check, so we have not listed it.
