A quiet law library in Islamabad with dark wooden shelves of bound books and green reading lamps, for a guide to the HEC Law-GAT

The Law Graduate Assessment Test (Law-GAT) is on Sunday 18 October 2026, and the Education Testing Council (ETC) of the Higher Education Commission (HEC) issues roll number slips from Friday 9 October, tentatively. You need 50 out of 100 to pass, and passing is mandatory before you can enrol with the Bar as an advocate. Download your slip at etc.hec.gov.pk. Registration closed on 27 September 2026.

We read the ETC announcements page, the Law-GAT advertisement and the revised Law-GAT syllabus on 9 October 2026. This test is for LLB graduates, not school leavers. If you want to start an LLB, you need the separate Law Admission Test (LAT) instead. Below is the date, the paper, the pass mark, what to carry and the rules that get candidates turned away at the gate.

Law-GAT is on 18 October 2026, slips from 9 October

The ETC lists the Law-GAT for Sunday 18 October 2026, with roll number slips issued on Friday 9 October 2026. Both dates are marked tentative. Any change will be notified on hec.gov.pk and etc.hec.gov.pk.

The ETC also sends an email and SMS when slips are issued. It warns that SMS will not reach a number that has been moved from one mobile network to another. If you ported your number, check your email or log in to the portal directly.

Who needs Law-GAT: every LLB graduate who wants a Bar licence

The ETC says qualifying Law-GAT is mandatory to become eligible for enrolment to the Bar as an advocate. It is open to anyone with a Bachelor's degree in law, or equivalent, from a local or foreign university recognised by HEC or the Pakistan Bar Council (PBC).

Passing Law-GAT is only one condition. You must also meet the other criteria in the PBC rules for enrolment. Once you are licensed, clients can verify a lawyer's licence through the bar councils, so the licence is what your career runs on.

The ETC allows a maximum of seven chances to pass the test. That limit matters. A candidate who sits unprepared and fails is using up a chance that cannot be bought back.

Law-GAT syllabus: 100 MCQs across six subjects

The test is multiple choice. The revised curriculum published by the ETC splits 100 questions across six subjects, and 50 out of 100 is the qualifying score.

SubjectMCQsWhat it covers
Constitution208 leading constitutional cases (5), the 1973 Constitution articles on rights, Parliament and Judicature (10), UN Charter and ICJ (5)
Jurisprudence10Salmond's Jurisprudence (5) and Islamic Jurisprudence by Imran Ahsan Khan Nyazee (5)
Civil Procedure Code20Selected sections and Orders 1, 6 to 9, 39, 41 and 43
Criminal law20PPC chapters (10) and CrPC chapters including FIR, bail and appeals (10)
Law of evidence20Qanun-e-Shahadat Order, 1984
Professional ethics10Rules 134 to 175B, Pakistan Legal Practitioners and Bar Councils Rules, 1976
Total100Pass mark 50
Law-GAT syllabus split: Constitution 20, CPC 20, criminal law 20, evidence 20, jurisprudence 10, ethics 10

The eight constitutional cases are named in the syllabus. They run from Maulvi Tamiz-ud-Din Khan (1955) and Dosso (1958) through Asma Jilani (1972), Nusrat Bhutto (1977), Nawaz Sharif (1993), Al-Jehad Trust (1996), Zafar Ali Shah (2000) and Khan Asfandyar Wali (2001). Five marks ride on these, so know each holding in one line.

Evidence, CPC and criminal law together carry 60 of the 100 marks. In the final days before the test, that is where revision time pays most.

How to download your Law-GAT roll number slip

The slip is on the same ETC portal you registered on. The ETC says it is also sent to your registered email.

  1. Open etc.hec.gov.pk and log in with your registered email and password.
  2. Go to your Law-GAT application on the dashboard.
  3. Download the roll number slip and print it.
  4. Check your name and CNIC number on the slip against your CNIC card. Any difference means you will not be allowed to sit the test.
  5. Note your test centre and reporting time. The ETC may move you to another centre if fewer than 250 candidates chose yours.
  6. For login problems, use onlinehelp.hec.gov.pk or call 051-111-119-432.

Test-day rules that can keep you out

Bring a printed roll number slip and your original CNIC or passport. The ETC will not accept an expired card, a photocopy or a picture on a phone screen.

  • Mobile phones, calculators and any recording or imaging device are banned inside the centre.
  • Taking, uploading or sharing pictures of the question book is an offence under ETC policy.
  • A candidate who registered using a parent's, sibling's or anyone else's CNIC will not be allowed to sit.
  • The test fee is non-refundable and non-transferable, so a missed test is a lost fee.

Anyone who missed this sitting should watch the ETC Test Calendar for the next quarterly date. School leavers who confused the two tests should look at HEC LAT registration, which is the entry test for the five-year LLB.

Law-GAT warning: original CNIC and printed slip needed, no phones, CNIC must match application
