If you fly from Pakistan to Jeddah for Umrah, you must be in Ihram before the plane passes the miqat or the point parallel to it, because Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Hajj and Umrah says King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah is neither a miqat nor a place to enter Ihram. Changing at Jeddah airport is too late. The Ministry says a pilgrim who passes the miqat without Ihram must go back to it, and one who enters Ihram after passing it owes a fidyah, a compensation.

Below are the Ministry's miqat rule for air travellers, what Ihram forbids, the Umrah permit rule for children, the five Grand Mosque gates and the items you cannot take inside. We read the Ministry's miqat page, its Umrah pillars page and its things to remember page on 28 October 2026.

Jeddah airport is not a miqat, so Ihram comes before landing

The Ministry is plain about it: pilgrims who live beyond the miqats and arrive by air must not pass the miqat, or the point parallel to it, without Ihram. Jeddah airport is inside that line. A flight from Lahore, Karachi or Islamabad crosses the line before it lands.

The Ministry names four spatial miqats set by the Prophet (peace be upon him), and says each serves its own region and anyone else who passes it on the way.

MiqatSet for the people ofWho else uses it
Dhul-HulaifahAl-MadinahAnyone travelling from Madinah to Makkah for Umrah
Al-JuhfahAsh-Sham (the Levant)Others who pass it
Qarn Al-ManazilNajdOthers who pass it
YalamlamYemenOthers who pass it

The Ministry page has a section on miqats by place of residence, but it was empty when we read it. So we do not name the single miqat a particular Pakistan flight crosses. Ask the cabin crew to announce it, and be ready well before.

Jeddah airport is not a miqat: Ihram rule for Umrah flights from Pakistan

How to enter Ihram on a flight from Pakistan

The Ministry describes Ihram as an act of the heart: the intention to start Umrah, followed by the Talbiyah. The clothes come first so you are ready, but the Ihram begins with the intention, said near the miqat or before it. Its pillars page even has a heading for entering Ihram on the airplane.

  1. Pack the two Ihram sheets, or your modest Ihram clothes, in your cabin bag, not your checked suitcase.
  2. Bathe and get ready at home or at the airport in Pakistan, since there is little room on board.
  3. Change into the Ihram clothes before boarding or early in the flight.
  4. Listen for the crew announcement about the miqat.
  5. Before the plane passes it, make the intention for Umrah: Labbayka 'Umratan.
  6. Begin the Talbiyah and keep to the Ihram rules from then on.

If you are flying to Madinah first and doing Umrah later, the miqat is different. You would enter Ihram at Dhul-Hulaifah on the road from Madinah to Makkah, which the Ministry names as the miqat of Madinah and of anyone passing it.

Steps to enter Ihram on an Umrah flight from Pakistan

Ihram forbids perfume, cutting hair or nails, and stitched clothes for men

Once in Ihram, the Ministry lists the main prohibitions. Men may not wear sewn clothing. Men and women may not cut their hair, clip their nails or put on perfume. Nobody in Ihram may contract a marriage, help arrange one or get engaged.

The Ministry quotes the hadith of Ibn Umar: no shirt, turban, trousers, hooded cloak or leather socks for men, and leather socks cut below the ankles only if sandals cannot be found. Scented soap, scented wipes and perfumed creams are easy to forget on a long flight, so leave them in the checked bag.

For questions of fiqh beyond these basics, such as what to do if a rule is broken by mistake, ask a scholar you trust before you travel. The Ministry's pages give the rules, not rulings on every case.

Children over 5 need an Umrah permit on the Nusuk app

The Ministry's guidance says children of all ages may attend prayers with their parents, but Umrah permits are required for children over 5, booked through the Nusuk app. Book the permit for each child, not just for the adults, before you head to the Haram.

The same page asks every pilgrim to carry the Nusuk card or Umrah identification card at all times, and to ask the hotel for a card with its name, address and phone number. Give each child a card or bracelet with the child's name and a parent's number.

The Nusuk app also handles the visa side and the Rawdah booking. The Umrah visa on Nusuk for Pakistanis and the Riaz-ul-Jannah permit rules set out both.

Items not allowed inside the Grand Mosque in Makkah for Umrah pilgrims

Five items stay out of the Grand Mosque, and five gates help you meet up

The Ministry lists what may not be taken into the Grand Mosque: food and drinks other than coffee, dates and water; sharp tools; flammable liquids; large bags and luggage; and baby strollers. Drop luggage at the hotel before your first Tawaf.

It also names five main gates, which make good meeting points for a family that gets split up in the crowd:

  • King Abdulaziz Gate, number 1, Western Square.
  • Safa Gate, number 11, near the Masa.
  • Fath Gate, number 45, northern square.
  • Umrah Gate, number 62, northern square.
  • King Fahd Gate, number 79, Western Square.

You may bring your own wheelchair, through the designated wheelchair entrances. Pilgrim assistance booths stand near the Haram for anyone who is lost. And for the journey from the airport itself, the options are covered under Jeddah airport to Makkah transport.

Common questions

Can I wear Ihram at Jeddah airport?

No. Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Hajj and Umrah says Jeddah's King Abdulaziz International Airport is neither a miqat nor a place to enter Ihram.

What happens if the plane passes the miqat before I make the intention?

The Ministry says a pilgrim who passes the miqat without Ihram must return to it, and one who enters Ihram after passing it must offer a fidyah. Ask a scholar about your case.

Can I put on the Ihram clothes in Pakistan?

Yes, many pilgrims change before boarding. The Ihram itself starts with the intention and Talbiyah, made before the plane passes the miqat.

Do children need a Nusuk permit for Umrah?

Yes, children over 5 need an Umrah permit through the Nusuk app, according to the Ministry's guidance.

Can I take Zamzam bottles or food into the Haram?

Food and drinks are not allowed except coffee, dates and water. Large bags are not allowed either.

Which miqat is for people flying to Madinah first?

Dhul-Hulaifah, the miqat of Madinah. You enter Ihram there on the way to Makkah.

How we verified this

What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.

Last checked 28 October 2026. We read the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah's Umrah, Miqaats, Umrah Pillars and Things to Remember pages at haj.gov.sa on that date. The miqat rule, the four named miqats, the Ihram prohibitions, the permit rule for children, the gates and the banned items come from those pages. The section listing miqats by place of residence was empty when we read it, so we do not name the miqat for a specific Pakistani route. The packing and timing tips are our own practical advice, not Ministry text.
