iPad and Tablet PTA Registration in Pakistan: Wi-Fi Models Need None, Cellular Models Need DIRBS
A Wi-Fi only iPad or tablet needs no PTA registration in Pakistan. A cellular model does, through DIRBS or *8484#. Check yours and the 60 day, 5 device rules.

A Wi-Fi only iPad or Android tablet does not need PTA registration in Pakistan, because it has no SIM and no IMEI for DIRBS to check. A cellular iPad or tablet with a SIM slot or eSIM does: register its IMEI on DIRBS, or by dialling *8484#, and pay the tax on the payment slip, the same way as a phone. The 60 day passport window, the five device yearly limit and the courier rules all apply to tablets too.
The question comes up every time someone brings an iPad home from the Gulf or orders a tablet from abroad. We read FBR's Customs General Order on regularising mobile devices and Apple's IMEI page on 31 October 2026. PTA's DIRBS site refused our connection that day, so where we quote its FAQ we say it was read for an earlier page.
Wi-Fi only tablets fall outside DIRBS
DIRBS registers devices with SIM and IMEI functionality. A Wi-Fi only iPad has no IMEI, so there is nothing to register and nothing for a mobile network to block. Apple says the IMEI appears only on Wi-Fi + Cellular iPad models.
FBR's order is titled "Procedure for regularization of unregistered mobile devices with SIM/IMEI functionality". Its declaration forms list four device types: mobile phone, dongle, tablet and other, each with a 15 digit IMEI. PTA's DIRBS FAQ, when we read it on 29 September 2026, described a mobile device as any SIM based device, naming tablets and smartwatches.
| Device | Has an IMEI? | PTA registration |
|---|---|---|
| iPad Wi-Fi | No | Not needed |
| iPad Wi-Fi + Cellular (SIM or eSIM) | Yes | Needed to use a Pakistani SIM |
| Android tablet, Wi-Fi only | No | Not needed |
| Android tablet with SIM slot (LTE or 5G) | Yes | Needed to use a Pakistani SIM |
| 4G dongle or pocket Wi-Fi device | Yes | Needed, listed as a dongle |

Find out which iPad you have in Settings > General > About
Open Settings, then General, then About. If you see an IMEI line, scroll if needed, the iPad is a cellular model. If there is only a serial number and no IMEI, it is Wi-Fi only and needs no registration.
Apple says the IMEI of a Wi-Fi + Cellular iPad is also printed on the back of the device, and it shows in Finder on a Mac under the device's General tab. On an Android tablet, look in Settings under About tablet, or check for a SIM tray on the side. A tablet with a SIM tray has an IMEI.
Once you have the IMEI, send it by SMS to 8484 to see its status. The replies are explained in what each PTA 8484 reply means. A cellular iPad already bought from an official Pakistani retailer should come back as registered.
How to register a cellular iPad or tablet on DIRBS
The steps are the same as for a phone. Apply on DIRBS with the IMEI, passport or CNIC, receive a payment slip ID (PSID), pay it, and the tablet is cleared once FBR confirms payment.
- Note the IMEI from Settings > General > About.
- Apply at dirbs.pta.gov.pk/drs, or dial *8484# from a phone with a local SIM.
- Enter your passport number if you arrived within 60 days, or your CNIC otherwise.
- Receive the PSID showing the duty and tax due.
- Pay through online banking, ATM, mobile banking or a bank branch.
- Insert the SIM once the status changes to registered.

The full walkthrough for each screen is in how to register a mobile with PTA. The tax itself is set by FBR, not PTA, and the payment slip is the only reliable figure. We do not publish a tablet tax amount because FBR has not published one per model.
Passport within 60 days costs less than CNIC later
FBR's order lets travellers register devices from their baggage within 60 days of arrival. After that, or on a CNIC, a prescribed fine is added to duty and tax. Each person can register five devices a year, and a tablet counts as one.
So if you are bringing a phone, a cellular iPad and a smartwatch, register all three inside the 60 days on your own passport. Do not use someone else's passport: PTA lets passport holders check every device registered against their number.
Visiting overseas Pakistanis and foreigners have a cheaper option for a short stay. FBR's order allows temporary registration of one mobile handset for 120 days, paired to a SIM in the visitor's own name. Whether a tablet qualifies as that one handset is not stated in the order, so ask PTA before relying on it. The rules are in temporary registration for 120 days.

Courier imports and unregistered tablets on Wi-Fi
A cellular tablet ordered from abroad by courier or post is held by customs until you show a paid PSID generated through DIRBS. FBR says devices with fake, replica, stolen or non-standard IMEIs are confiscated.
If your parcel is stuck, the steps for a phone stuck at customs apply to tablets as well. Check that the seller ships a genuine model before you pay.
And what if you never register a cellular iPad? Under FBR's order, a blocked IMEI is refused local mobile network service. On our reading, the iPad still works on home Wi-Fi, because Wi-Fi is not a mobile network, but its SIM will not. If you never plan to put a Pakistani SIM in it, that may be enough, but you lose mobile data on the move.
Common questions
Does a Wi-Fi iPad need PTA approval?
No. It has no SIM and no IMEI, so DIRBS has nothing to register.
How do I check if my iPad is Wi-Fi or cellular?
Open Settings, General, About. If an IMEI is listed, it is a cellular model.
How much is PTA tax on an iPad?
FBR sets it and DIRBS shows it on your payment slip. We found no official per-model figure for tablets.
Can I use an unregistered cellular iPad on Wi-Fi?
On our reading of FBR's order, yes. The block stops mobile network service, not Wi-Fi.
Does a tablet count in the five device limit?
Yes. FBR's note says an individual can register five mobile devices a year, and its forms list tablets as mobile devices.
How we verified this
What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.
Last checked 31 October 2026. We read FBR's Customs General Order 01 of 2024 with the consolidated CGO 01 of 2019 and Apple's page Find the serial number or IMEI on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch on 31 October 2026. PTA's DIRBS site refused our connection on 31 October; its FAQ wording on SIM based devices, including tablets, is from our reading of 29 September 2026. We could not confirm the tax amount for any tablet, whether the 120 day temporary option accepts a tablet, or how Android tablet makers label the IMEI. We did not register a tablet ourselves.
