An Ireland Critical Skills Employment Permit for a Pakistani worker needs a job offer of at least 2 years in an occupation on Ireland's Critical Skills Occupations List, paying at least €40,904 a year with a relevant degree. Any job paying over €68,911 also qualifies, unless the occupation is excluded. The permit fee is €1,000, and 90 per cent comes back if the application is refused.

These figures come from Ireland's Department of Enterprise, which issues employment permits. We read its Critical Skills Employment Permit page on 4 November 2026. The permit is the main skilled work route into Ireland, and it leads to family reunification straight away and to Stamp 4, a residence permission that lets you work without a permit, after it ends.

Ireland Critical Skills Employment Permit salary thresholds for Pakistanis: 36,848, 40,904 and 68,911 euros

Ireland's three salary routes for the Critical Skills permit

There are three ways to qualify on salary. A listed critical skills job with a relevant degree needs at least €40,904 a year. A recent graduate in such a job needs €36,848. Any other eligible job needs more than €68,911 a year.

The Department's page does not give a start date for these amounts. Ireland has raised thresholds before, so check the page on the day your employer applies. The job offer itself must last at least 2 years.

What the permit costs and how long it takes

The processing fee is €1,000. If the application is refused, 90 per cent is refunded. Applications must reach the Department at least 12 weeks before the planned start date, and they are processed strictly in date order by employer type.

Employer type means whether your employer is a Trusted Partner, a registration that speeds up its own paperwork, or a Standard employer. If the Department asks for more information, it must be returned within 28 days. If the permit is refused, a review must be requested within 28 days too.

Steps for a Pakistani worker to get an Ireland Critical Skills Employment Permit

How to apply from Pakistan, step by step

The permit application is made online on Employment Permits Online, the Department's system. After the permit is granted, a Pakistani national still needs an Irish entry visa to travel. Plan both stages, because the permit alone does not put you on a plane.

  1. Check your occupation on the Critical Skills Occupations List on the Department of Enterprise website.
  2. Get a written job offer for at least 2 years that meets the salary threshold.
  3. Prepare your degree, transcripts and work experience letters. Get Pakistani degrees attested by HEC, since Irish employers and the visa office usually ask for verified copies.
  4. Apply on Employment Permits Online at least 12 weeks before the start date, using the Department's Critical Skills checklist, and pay the €1,000 fee.
  5. Answer any request for more information within 28 days.
  6. Once the permit is granted, apply for the Irish employment visa from Pakistan.
  7. After arrival, register your permission with Irish immigration.

Never pay an agent for a "guaranteed Irish work permit". The permit needs a real employer and a real job, and the Department decides it. Our guide on how to report an unlicensed job agent explains your options in Pakistan if one has already taken money.

Family and long-term residence rights

Critical Skills permit holders can apply for immediate family reunification through Ireland's Immigration Service Delivery. A spouse or partner living in Ireland can work in any job after getting a Dependant, Partner or Spouse Employment Permit, which is currently free.

When your permit and registration card expire, you can apply directly to the Department of Justice for Stamp 4, without renewing the work permit. A Stamp 4 Support Letter has not been needed since 30 November 2023. The immigration permission granted after the permit is for 2 years and can be renewed. Long-term residence becomes possible after 60 months of residence.

For a Pakistani family, that is the key difference from many Gulf work visas: the spouse can work and the route leads to long-term residence. If your partner wants to study instead, see our Ireland student visa guide.

Common reasons Pakistani applications go wrong

Most problems are avoidable. The job is not on the list, the pay is below the threshold once allowances are removed, the contract is shorter than 2 years, or the application goes in less than 12 weeks before the start date.

  • Wrong occupation. Check the exact role on the Critical Skills Occupations List, not a similar title.
  • Pay below threshold. Confirm the annual figure in the contract meets the minimum.
  • Short contract. The offer must be for at least 2 years.
  • Degree not relevant. The €40,904 route needs a relevant degree.
  • Late filing. Apply at least 12 weeks before the start date.

Comparing other skilled routes? Our guides to the UK Skilled Worker visa and Germany's Opportunity Card use the same kind of checks. For a short trip to meet employers first, the Ireland visit visa is the right route, not a work permit.
