Jaffar Express (39UP) leaves Quetta at 09:00, reaches Sibi at 13:40 and Rohri at 20:25, then Lahore at 09:40 and Peshawar Cantt at 19:35 the next day. The return Jaffar Express (40DN) leaves Peshawar Cantt at 06:00 and reaches Quetta at 15:40 the next day. Economy from Quetta to Peshawar costs Rs 5,550, and an AC Sleeper berth costs Rs 18,250.
We read these times and fares on the official Pakistan Railways booking system on 2 November 2026, for trains on 5 November. Jaffar Express is the train that links Balochistan with upper Sindh, Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. When we searched Karachi Cantt to Quetta for the same date, the booking system returned no train at all. So for most people heading to or from Quetta by rail, this is the train. Jaffar Express takes 34 hours 35 minutes from Quetta to Peshawar
The 39UP covers 1,632 km. The 40DN takes 33 hours 40 minutes on the way back. Both run through the night between Rohri and Lahore.

The first stretch out of Quetta is slow for a reason. The line climbs down through Kolpur, Mach and Ab-i-Gum to Sibi, and covers 141 km in 4 hours 40 minutes. Sit on the window side if you can.

The 40DN is also a handy daytime train from Peshawar or Rawalpindi to Lahore. It leaves Rawalpindi at 09:35 and reaches Lahore at 15:00.
How to book a Jaffar Express ticket
Pakistan Railways lets you reserve up to 90 days ahead, according to its official FAQ. Quetta, Sibi, Sukkur and Rohri all have computerised reservation offices, if you prefer a counter.
- Open pakrailways.gov.pk or the Rabta app and sign in.
- Enter your stations, for example Quetta to Lahore Jn.
- Pick the date and the 39UP or 40DN Jaffar Express.
- Choose your class and seat or berth.
- Pay with JazzCash, Easypaisa or another option shown, and keep the SMS.
Luggage, refunds and late running on Jaffar Express
Free luggage is 50 kg in AC Sleeper and 20 kg in every other class. Trade goods, such as cloth bales or boxes of goods for sale, get no free allowance at all, and the full Pakistan Railways luggage allowance lists the other exclusions.
Cancelling an e-ticket costs 10 per cent more than 48 hours before departure, 20 per cent between 48 and 24 hours, and 30 per cent within 24 hours. If the train is cancelled or runs more than 6 hours late, no deduction applies, with an application signed by the station master.
