Short answer: Pakistan Railways sells five classes: AC Sleeper (code ACSL), AC Parlour Car (PC), AC Business (ACLZ), AC Standard (ACL) and Economy (EC). On the Tezgam from Karachi to Lahore, economy cost Rs 4,900 and AC Sleeper Rs 14,850 when we checked fares in September 2026. AC Sleeper is the only class with a 50 kg luggage allowance; every other class gets 20 kg.

The class codes show up on your ticket and in the Rabta booking app, often with no explanation. We read the class list, the FAQ and the terms on the Pakistan Railways website on 20 October 2026, and we use the fares from our own check of the railway's booking system on 27 September 2026. So this page tells you what each code means, what it costs and what you get with it.

Pakistan Railways has five classes, from Economy to AC Sleeper

The railway's "Available Classes in Trains" page lists five classes with their codes: ACSL for AC Sleeper, PC for AC Parlour Car, ACLZ for AC Business, ACL for AC Standard and EC for Economy. Not every train carries every class, so the choice depends on the train you pick.

Pakistan Railways class codes: ACSL AC Sleeper, PC AC Parlour Car, ACLZ AC Business, ACL AC Standard, EC Economy

ECEconomy20 kgAlmost every train
ACLAC Standard20 kgMost mail and express trains
ACLZAC Business20 kgLong-distance trains such as Tezgam and Karakoram
PCAC Parlour Car20 kgGreen Line and some intercity trains
ACSLAC Sleeper50 kgOnly a few trains, such as Tezgam and Khyber Mail

The railway's page gives only the names and codes. It does not describe the coaches. So when you book, check on the screen whether you are getting a seat or a berth, especially in economy, where a berth costs a little extra.

AC Sleeper costs about three times Economy on the same train

On the Tezgam (7UP) from Karachi Cantt to Lahore, our check on 27 September 2026 found Rs 4,900 in Economy, Rs 8,700 in AC Standard, Rs 11,550 in AC Business and Rs 14,850 in AC Sleeper. That makes AC Sleeper about 3 times the economy fare, and AC Business about 2.4 times.

Tezgam fares from Karachi to Lahore by class in September 2026, Economy to AC Sleeper

Look at the last row. On the Lahore to Rawalpindi intercity trains, AC Parlour cost more than AC Business. So the class name alone does not tell you the price order. Compare the fares for your own train. The full September price list, route by route, is in the Pakistan Railways fare check.

Only AC Sleeper gives you 50 kg of free luggage

The railway's FAQ allows 50 kg of free luggage per ticket in AC Sleeper. AC sitter, AC lower, first class sleeper, economy and second class each get 20 kg. Anything above that is charged, and some items, such as fridges and generators, get no free allowance at all.

That 30 kg gap matters for families moving between cities, or for anyone carrying a wedding's worth of bags. The rules on what you can carry, and the charge for extra weight, are in the Pakistan Railways luggage allowance. Trade goods, like bales of cloth or cartons for sale, never count toward the free allowance in any class.

Your class also decides the waiting room and an AC refund

The FAQ says waiting rooms at stations are free, but the room you may use depends on the class of your ticket. The terms page also says that if the air conditioning fails during your journey, the railway refunds the difference between your AC fare and the economy fare, if the guard gives you certificate CM-109.

So ask the guard for that certificate the moment the AC stops working. Without it, there is no refund. Station facilities, including waiting rooms and wheelchairs, are covered in Pakistan Railways station facilities.

Book early and choose a class in five steps

Pakistan Railways lets you reserve up to 90 days ahead, according to its FAQ. The 2025 fare table also gave a 5 per cent lower fare for booking more than 48 hours before departure. Use the steps below to pick the right class for your trip.

  1. Search your route and date on the Rabta app or at a reservation office.
  2. Note which classes your train carries and the fare for each.
  3. For an overnight trip, check whether your class gives a berth or a seat.
  4. If you carry more than 20 kg of bags, price AC Sleeper against paying for extra luggage.
  5. Book at least 48 hours ahead, and check the class code on your ticket before you pay.

Children aged 3 to under 10 paid half fare under the 2025 fare table, and other discounts are set out in Pakistan Railways concessions. The Karakoram Express is due to be sold by a private company from 30 October 2026, with its own class names, as reported in the Karakoram Express handover.

Common questions about Pakistan Railways classes

What does ACLZ mean on a Pakistan Railways ticket?

ACLZ is the railway's code for AC Business. ACL is AC Standard, ACSL is AC Sleeper, PC is AC Parlour Car and EC is Economy.

Which is the most expensive class on Pakistan Railways?

Usually AC Sleeper. On the Tezgam from Karachi to Lahore it cost Rs 14,850 in our September 2026 check, against Rs 4,900 in economy.

Is AC Parlour always cheaper than AC Business?

No. On the Green Line, AC Parlour was cheaper at Rs 13,200 against Rs 14,600. On the Lahore to Rawalpindi intercity trains it cost more, Rs 2,400 against Rs 2,150.

How much luggage can I take in economy?

20 kg free per ticket, according to the railway's FAQ. Only AC Sleeper gets 50 kg.

What happens if the AC fails during my trip?

You get the difference between the AC and economy fares back, if the guard issues certificate CM-109. Ask for it on the train.

How far ahead can I book?

Up to 90 days, according to the Pakistan Railways FAQ.

How we verified this

What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.

Last checked 20 October 2026. The class names and codes come from the Pakistan Railways classes page, and the luggage allowances, waiting room rule and 90 day booking limit from its FAQ, both read on 20 October 2026. The AC failure refund is from the railway's terms page, read the same day. Fares are from our own check of the railway's booking system on 27 September 2026 for travel on 5 October, and the child fare and 5 per cent advance discount are from the 2025 fare table. Fares change, so check your own train before you book. The "where you will see it" column is from that fare check, not from the railway's class page.
