Short answer: Karakoram Express bookings are reported to move from Pakistan Railways to a private company, Prime Rail, from 30 October 2026. Pakistan Railways keeps selling tickets until 29 October. Prime Rail's own website already lists the Karakoram Express between Karachi and Lahore. Pakistan Railways had not posted a notice about the change when we checked on 20 October 2026.

The Karakoram Express is train 41UP and 42DN between Karachi and Lahore, one of the busiest long-distance trains in Pakistan. The handover was reported on 19 October 2026. It is part of a wider plan to hand the commercial running of passenger trains to private firms. Here is what we could confirm, what we could not, and what to do if you plan to travel.

Prime Rail takes over Karakoram Express bookings from 30 October

Reports on 19 October 2026 said Pakistan Railways will handle Karakoram Express bookings until 29 October. From 30 October, Prime Rail is to run ticket sales and related operations. The managers of Rabta, the railway's booking app, were reportedly told to open advance bookings under the new arrangement.

Karakoram Express bookings move to Prime Rail from 30 October 2026

We read Prime Rail's website on 20 October 2026. It names one train, the Karakoram Express, and lets you search between 12 stations from Karachi Cantt to Lahore Junction. Its FAQ says you can book on the website or the Prime Rail app and pay by card, bank transfer, JazzCash or EasyPaisa.

What we did not find is the other side of the deal in writing. The Pakistan Railways public notices page, which we also read on 20 October, lists nothing on the Karakoram Express or Prime Rail. Its latest notice was dated 14 October and was about the Rehman Baba Express inquiry.

The Karakoram Express was one of five trains outsourced in June

Pakistan Railways handed the commercial management of five passenger trains to private partners in June 2026, in a deal reported at about Rs 10.75 billion. The Karakoram Express, Awam Express and Millat Express were reported to be placed under a public private partnership model.

The dates have moved before. One report earlier this month said the Karakoram Express would pass to its new operator on 8 October. The 19 October report gives 30 October. Reports differ, and no official timetable for the handover has been published, so treat 30 October as the reported date rather than a notified one.

Prime Rail lists 12 stations from Karachi Cantt to Lahore

Prime Rail's search menu lists Karachi Cantt, Drigh Road, Landhi Junction, Hyderabad Junction, Nawabshah, Rohri Junction, Bahawalpur, Khanewal, Sahiwal, Raiwind, Kot Lakhpat and Lahore Junction. It does not give the order of stops, the timings or the fares. You only see those after you search.

Stations listed on Prime Rail for the Karakoram Express between Karachi and Lahore

The list runs through Sahiwal, not Faisalabad. That matches an earlier report that the train would run via Sahiwal until its Faisalabad section is restored. We could not confirm the route on a Pakistan Railways page.

For comparison, when we checked Pakistan Railways fares on Rabta on 27 September 2026 for a 5 October trip, the Karakoram Express from Karachi Cantt to Lahore cost Rs 4,900 in economy, Rs 9,150 in AC Standard and Rs 11,550 in AC Business. Those were the railway's own fares, listed in the Pakistan Railways fare check. A private operator may set different prices.

Check your booking before you travel on or after 30 October

If you hold a ticket bought from Pakistan Railways for travel on or after 30 October, confirm it is still valid before the day. Neither side has said publicly what happens to those tickets. Pakistan Railways allows bookings up to 90 days ahead, so some passengers will already hold them.

  1. Find your ticket and note the train number, date and seat.
  2. Call the Pakistan Railways helpline and ask whether your Karakoram Express ticket for that date will be honoured.
  3. If you are told to rebook, ask how the refund will be paid and whether a deduction applies.
  4. For new trips from 30 October, search on Prime Rail's website and compare the fare and class names.
  5. Keep screenshots of every quote and payment.

The railway's complaint lines are set out in how to complain to Pakistan Railways. If you cancel a ticket bought from Prime Rail, its deductions differ from the railway's, which we compare in the Prime Rail refund rules.

What we could not confirm about Prime Rail

Prime Rail's website showed no phone number and an empty registered address line when we read it on 20 October 2026. It says support works 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Its terms warn that tickets bought from unauthorised sellers will be cancelled without refund.

So book only through the company's own website or app, or through Pakistan Railways if it says it is selling on Prime Rail's behalf. Do not pay an agent who sends you a bank account number on WhatsApp. If something goes wrong, keep the payment record, because a refund depends on it.

Common questions about the Karakoram Express handover

Who runs the Karakoram Express from 30 October 2026?

Prime Rail, a private company, is reported to take over bookings and related operations from 30 October. Pakistan Railways had not published a notice by 20 October.

Can I still book the Karakoram Express on Rabta?

Reports say Pakistan Railways handles bookings until 29 October. For later dates, check both Rabta and Prime Rail and call the railway helpline if unsure.

Will Karakoram Express fares change?

No new fares have been published. On 27 September the railway's fare from Karachi Cantt to Lahore was Rs 4,900 in economy. A private operator may change prices.

Does the Karakoram Express stop at Faisalabad?

Prime Rail's station list has Sahiwal and no Faisalabad. An earlier report said the train runs via Sahiwal until the Faisalabad section reopens.

Is the senior citizen discount valid on the Karakoram Express?

No. The 2025 Pakistan Railways fare table excludes the Karakoram Express and outsourced trains from the discount for ages 65 to 74.

What if my ticket was bought before the handover?

Neither side has said. Call the Pakistan Railways helpline with your ticket number before you travel.

How we verified this

What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.

Last checked 20 October 2026. We read Prime Rail's website, including its FAQ, refund policy and terms, and the Pakistan Railways public notices and FAQ pages, on 20 October 2026. The 29 and 30 October dates, the Rabta instruction and the earlier 8 October date are reported, not confirmed on an official page. The June outsourcing figures are reported. Fares are from our own Rabta check on 27 September 2026 and may have changed.
