Pakistan Railways set an inquiry into the Rehman Baba Express derailment near Multan for 17 and 18 October 2026. See what is confirmed, reported and what to do.

Pakistan Railways has called an inquiry into the Rehman Baba Express derailment near Multan, with sittings on 17 and 18 October 2026 at the Divisional Superintendent's office in Multan. The train left the tracks early on 13 October near Sher Shah station. Reports differ on how many people died or were hurt, and no official cause has been published.
The Rehman Baba Express runs from Karachi to Peshawar. On the morning of 13 October 2026, several of its coaches derailed near Sher Shah station in the Multan area, and the injured were taken to Nishtar Hospital in Multan. We opened the Pakistan Railways public notices page on 15 October 2026 and found the inquiry notice dated 14 October. This article separates what that page confirms from what is only reported.
Pakistan Railways has fixed the inquiry for 17 and 18 October in Multan
The public notices page of Pakistan Railways lists an item titled "Rehman Baba Express enquiry on 17th and 18th October 2026". It says the sittings take place in the committee room of the Divisional Superintendent's office, Pakistan Railways, Multan. The notice carries the date 14 October 2026.
The notice links to a one page PDF. That file is a scanned image, so we could not read its text. We cannot say who sits on the inquiry panel or who may appear before it. We also cannot say whether passengers are invited to give statements. Treat those points as unknown until Pakistan Railways publishes them.
An inquiry notice is not a finding. It tells you when and where the railway will hear evidence. The cause of the derailment is still open.

Reports differ on deaths and injuries, so no final count exists
Early reports gave four deaths and then a higher figure, and the number of injured ranged from about 30 to more than 40. Pakistan Railways has not published a final casualty list on its public notices or press release pages. Until it does, any single number should be treated as provisional.
The President and the Prime Minister both expressed concern in statements released by their offices. The Prime Minister told the authorities to speed up rescue work and give the injured all medical help. The President asked for a transparent investigation into the cause.
The Railways Minister was reported to have said that compensation would follow the railway's insurance policy. We could not find the policy amounts on the Pakistan Railways pages we opened, so we do not give any figure. If a family is owed compensation, the rules and the amount must come from Pakistan Railways in writing.
The cause is not known and should not be guessed
No official cause has been published. Some reports mention a mechanical check at a junction before the train reached the area, and one passenger account mentions a fault in one coach. These are claims, not findings. A derailment can come from the track, the coach, the wheels or the way the train was run, and only an inquiry can say which.
The driver was quoted as saying the train ran at about 100 km/h on a clear signal. That is also a report and has not been confirmed by the inquiry. We repeat it only to show how many points are still open, and we do not treat it as a conclusion.
If you read a post online that names a cause or blames a person, check whether it points to a Pakistan Railways notice. If it does not, wait for the inquiry.
Delays on 13 October hit trains to Lahore, and the schedule has since moved on
On the day of the derailment, trains coming north from Karachi and Quetta ran late at Lahore. Reports listed delays of between one and a half and six hours for services such as the Jaffar Express, Allama Iqbal Express, Tezgam and Green Line. One service was reported to have been sent by a different route.
Those were same day figures. Do not use them to plan a trip now. The live timetable is on the Pakistan Railways train timing page, and the 117 inquiry line is the quickest way to ask about one train. Our steps to check Pakistan Railways train timings show how to read the schedule before you leave home.
The Sialkot to Rawalpindi Marka-i-Haq train, reported to start on 15 October, is a separate service. Its status is covered in the Marka-i-Haq train report.
Relatives and passengers should use the railway and hospital channels first
If you are looking for a person who was on the train, start with the hospital and the railway. Nishtar Hospital in Multan received the injured. Pakistan Railways runs a 117 inquiry service, and Rescue 1122 handled the first response. Keep the ticket details, the coach and seat number, and a copy of the CNIC ready when you call.
- Call the 117 railway inquiry line and give the train name and date, 13 October 2026.
- Ask Nishtar Hospital reception for the injured list, and carry the passenger's CNIC number.
- Keep the e-ticket SMS or paper ticket, because it proves the journey.
- Write down the name of every official who gives you information, with the time.
- Ask in writing for the compensation procedure, and keep a copy of what you submit.

If you did not travel on 13 October but hold a ticket for a train that was delayed, the rules in Pakistan Railways ticket refund rules explain what you can claim. A passenger who wants to complain about service after the accident can use the steps to complain to Pakistan Railways. The railway's own complaint resolution time page lists one week for complaints about delays and two weeks for new trains or stoppages.

What to watch next from the inquiry
After the 17 and 18 October sittings, look for a Pakistan Railways press release or a new public notice. A report may name the cause, list recommendations, or say who is responsible. Until then, the facts that stand are the date of the accident, the place, the inquiry dates and the hospital that took the injured.
The press release page we opened on 15 October still showed its latest entry as 7 July 2026, so the railway had not posted an accident statement there. The public notices page is where the inquiry notice appeared. Check both pages, and treat anything else as unconfirmed.
