Short answer: City Traffic Police Lahore says it has suspended the driving licences of 170 drivers involved in fatal accidents, and that every driver in a fatal or serious accident will now lose the licence. The announcement came on 11 October 2026. A driver caught using a suspended licence faces a fresh legal case.

A licence in Pakistan is usually treated as a card you renew and forget. This announcement treats it as a permission that the police can take away on the day of a crash. For every driver in Lahore, that is a different relationship with the card in your wallet.

We tried the Punjab Police site on 12 October 2026 and it was blocked to our requests, and the Lahore Traffic Police page we tried did not load. The details come from news reports of the Chief Traffic Officer's statement, so we mark them as reported. We say what is stated, what is not stated, and what a driver can do now.

Lahore has suspended 170 licences under a new rule

The reports say the Chief Traffic Officer, Syed Abdul Raheem Shirazi, announced the suspension of 170 licences on 11 October 2026. The drivers were involved in fatal road accidents. The policy is described as zero tolerance.

The key line, as quoted in the reports, is that the licences of drivers involved in every fatal and serious non-fatal accident would now be suspended. That widens the rule. Before, a suspension followed a conviction or a court order. Now the police say it follows the accident.

The reports also say suspension runs alongside legal proceedings and court orders. In other words, losing the licence does not replace a case. It sits next to it.

What the rule covers and what it leaves open

As reported, the rule covers fatal accidents, serious accidents without a death, reckless driving and driving while the licence is suspended. A minimum one year suspension was reported for reckless driving. The reports do not say how long a suspension after an accident lasts.

What Lahore Traffic Police reported on driving licence suspension after fatal accidents

The two blanks in the table are the ones that matter for a driver. If your licence is suspended, you need to know when it ends and whom to ask. Neither was in the reports we read.

What a suspension means in practice

A suspended licence cannot be used to drive. You are not allowed to keep driving "just locally" while you wait. If you do, the reports say a new case is registered against you.

This is the part drivers underestimate. A first offence with a fatal accident may be a matter for a court. Driving on a suspended licence is a second, separate offence, and it is the easier one to prove, because the record is in the police system.

Punjab already has a points system. Our note on Punjab driving licence penalty points explains how repeated violations add up to a ban. The Lahore announcement is different. It is tied to accidents, not to a points count.

How to check your licence status

Check your own licence on the official Punjab portal before you drive, especially if you were involved in an accident. We opened the DLIMS portal on 12 October 2026 and it offers learner, renewal and duplicate services. Our guide below covers checking a licence by number.

  1. Keep your licence number and CNIC number ready.
  2. Open the official Punjab driving licence portal, not a search result with a similar name.
  3. Enter the licence number and read the status line.
  4. If it says suspended or blocked, stop driving and note the date.
  5. Ask the traffic office that holds your case what is needed to restore it, and keep the answer in writing.
Five steps to check whether a Punjab driving licence is suspended

Our guide to checking or tracking a driving licence online in Punjab and Sindh covers the portal step by step. If your licence is due, the guide to renewing a driving licence in Punjab shows the renewal route. A renewal will not clear a suspension, so check the status first.

What this does not change

The announcement is a Lahore Traffic Police policy as reported. It is not a new law passed by the provincial assembly, and the reports do not cite a section of the Motor Vehicles Ordinance. So we cannot say whether it applies in other Punjab cities, or how a court would treat a suspension that the police order on their own.

It also does not say that a driver is guilty. A suspension is an administrative step taken after an accident. Guilt is for a court to decide, and a driver keeps the right to argue the case there.

Smoke and smog enforcement is running at the same time. Our report on the Punjab crackdown on smoky vehicles before smog season covers that separate drive.

Common questions

Did Lahore Traffic Police really suspend 170 licences?

Reports of the Chief Traffic Officer's statement on 11 October 2026 say so. We could not read the order on an official page.

Is my licence suspended after any accident?

The statement says the licence of a driver involved in every fatal and serious non-fatal accident would now be suspended. A minor accident was not named.

How long does the suspension last?

The reports give at least one year for reckless driving. They do not say how long a post-accident suspension lasts.

Can I get my licence back?

No restoration process was described. Ask the traffic office that holds your case, and ask for the answer in writing.

What if I drive on a suspended licence?

The reports say a fresh legal case is registered. Do not drive until your status is cleared.

How we verified this

What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.

We opened the Punjab DLIMS portal on 12 October 2026. The Punjab Police site was blocked to our requests, so we could not read the order itself. The facts above come from news reports of 11 October 2026. Check the status of your own licence on the official Punjab DLIMS portal before you drive.
