What to Do If You Lose Your CNIC

A lost CNIC is two problems, and most people only deal with one. The obvious problem is that you no longer have your card. The quieter one is that somebody else might, and a CNIC in the wrong hands is used to register connections and open things in your name.

So do both. Apply for a replacement at NADRA, and separately check what is already registered against your identity. The second takes minutes and is the one nobody thinks of.

Replacing the card

NADRA issues a replacement for a lost card. You do not need to prove your identity from scratch, because your record already exists with your biometrics against it.

1. Go to a NADRA registration centre, or start online if the service is available to you.
2. Ask for a replacement of a lost card rather than a new registration.
3. Give your biometrics, which is how the existing record is matched to you.
4. Check every field on the confirmation slip before you leave the counter.
5. Keep the token and the tracking number so you can follow the application.

Check what your identity is already being used for

Where it was lost changes what you should do

A card that slipped out of a pocket at home is a different situation from a wallet taken in a snatching. If the card was stolen, particularly along with a phone or bank cards, treat it as an identity risk rather than an inconvenience.

In that case report the theft to the police and keep a copy of the report, block the cards, and check the SIM position sooner rather than later. A stolen wallet is often the start of a sequence rather than the end of one.

What a lost CNIC blocks in the meantime

Until the replacement arrives, expect friction. A valid CNIC is the document behind opening a bank account, reactivating a dormant one, buying a SIM, most government applications, and travel within the country in some situations.

Plan around it. If something time sensitive is pending, ask the office concerned what it accepts as an interim, because a token or tracking slip is sometimes recognised and sometimes not. Do not assume either way.

If the card reappears

People find the card after applying, which is common and not a problem. Follow whatever the centre tells you about the earlier application, and do not simply keep using the old card if a replacement has been issued against it.

Carrying two versions of the same identity document is the kind of small untidiness that becomes a large inconvenience at a checkpoint or a bank counter. Sort it out at the centre.

Common questions about a lost CNIC

Do I need a police report to replace a lost CNIC?

For an ordinary loss, generally not, since your biometric record already exists. Where the card was stolen, a report is worth having anyway for the wider situation.

How long does a replacement take?

It depends on the category you apply under, since normal and urgent processing differ. Ask at the centre and track the application rather than waiting.

Can someone open a bank account with my lost CNIC?

Account opening involves biometric verification against the NADRA record, which is a real obstacle. The likelier misuse is elsewhere, which is why the SIM check is the sensible first look.

Can I apply online?

Online services exist for some NADRA applications. Availability depends on your situation, so check what applies to you rather than assuming a centre visit is unavoidable or that it is not.

What if my name or details are wrong on the new card?

Raise it immediately at the centre rather than accepting it, because an error carried on your identity document propagates into everything else that is built on it.
