OIST PhD in Japan for Pakistani Students: Fully Funded, Apply by 15 November 2026
OIST in Japan offers a fully funded 5 year PhD from about 2.6 million yen a year. Pakistanis apply by 7:59 pm PKT on 15 November 2026 with a 5,000 yen fee.

Short answer: Pakistani graduates can apply for a fully funded five year PhD at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) in Japan until 15 November 2026, 11:59 pm Japan time, which is 7:59 pm in Pakistan. Support starts at about 2.6 million yen a year. The application fee is 5,000 yen and there is no written entrance exam.
OIST is a graduate university on Okinawa, in southern Japan, that teaches entirely in English and takes about 60 PhD students a year. We read OIST's admissions pages on 20 October 2026. The OIST PhD deadline is less than four weeks away, and the application cannot even be submitted until two referees have sent their letters. That is the part most people leave too late.
OIST's PhD applications close on 15 November 2026
The application period for the Admissions Workshop 2027 runs from 31 July to 15 November 2026, closing at 23:59 Japan Standard Time. Japan is four hours ahead of Pakistan, so the last moment is 7:59 pm PKT on Sunday, 15 November. Applications sent earlier go to the next committee meeting.

| Stage | Date |

OIST says the dates may change. The 2027 workshop is held online, which saves shortlisted Pakistani applicants a trip to Japan at the interview stage.
Support starts at about 2.6 million yen a year
OIST describes its PhD as "a fully-funded 5-year program". Financial support starts at about 2.6 million yen a year in the first year and rises with progress to about 3.6 million yen. OIST says this support, including the tuition fee, is enough to live on, and both figures are taxable.
Housing is subsidised on campus. A furnished single apartment costs 21,600 yen a month, or 259,200 yen a year. A two room flat shared by two students costs 18,000 yen each a month. PhD students are expected to live on campus for at least the first year.
Our arithmetic: a year of single apartment rent is about 10 per cent of the first year support. Travel to conferences is budgeted separately, and every student has personal accident and liability insurance. OIST also runs an on campus preschool, which matters if you are bringing children.

Any bachelor's or master's graduate can apply
You need a bachelor's or master's degree, or to finish one before you enrol. OIST states no nationality limit; applicants from outside Japan need a valid passport. There is no minimum English score, but the score decides whether you take a preparatory course.
If your degree was taught or examined in a language other than English, OIST wants a TOEFL iBT or IELTS score from the last two years. Many Pakistani degrees are taught in English. Ask OIST before booking a test whether a letter from your university will do, because the page does not say so directly.
GRE scores are optional. So are publications, though they help. Your degree should be from an HEC recognised university, which you can confirm with the steps to check a university is HEC recognised.
Gather five documents and two to five referees
The online application asks for transcripts, a statement of purpose, a CV, recommendation letters and ID. It can be submitted only after at least two recommendation letters have arrived. Letters must come from professorial level faculty, not lab members or postdocs.
- Ask two to five professors for letters now, and give them the 15 November date.
- Collect your transcripts and degree certificates as PDFs, with an English note for anything not in English.
- Write a statement of purpose of no more than 800 words, or 3,000 characters, on your research goals and why OIST.
- Update your CV and add any publications or GRE scores you have.
- Scan your passport and take an ID photo within the last three months.
- Pay the 5,000 yen fee and submit before 7:59 pm PKT on 15 November.

If you graduated more than five years ago, an industry supervisor may write one letter, but OIST prefers faculty. The 5,000 yen fee is not refundable and OIST offers no fee waivers at present. Pay with a card that allows international payments, and see how to turn international card payments on or off in your banking app if it declines.
Shortlisted applicants join an online workshop
OIST holds no written entrance exam. Shortlisted applicants are invited to the Admissions Workshop, held online for 2027, with interviews between 18 January and 7 February 2027. Taking part is required. Final results come out in mid-February 2027.
If you are admitted, you will need a Japanese student visa before you travel. The general rules for travel are in the steps for a Japan visa from Pakistan. For comparison, two other funded routes close soon: the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship on 1 December and ETH Zurich's ESOP for master's students in November.

How we verified this
What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.
We read OIST's admissions page, its PhD application and eligibility page and its student support page on 20 October 2026. The Pakistan time, the rent share of support and the annual rent are our own arithmetic, using Japan at UTC+9 and Pakistan at UTC+5. OIST does not say whether the 2.6 million yen figure is before or after tax beyond calling it taxable, and its support figures carry no year, so check them on your offer letter.
