Most OLX scams in Pakistan ask for one of two things: money before you see the item, or the item before real money reaches you. OLX's own advice is to meet in a public place, check the item, then pay in cash, and to keep the chat on OLX instead of WhatsApp. If you were cheated, report the user in the app, call OLX on 0800-10101, then complain to your bank or wallet and the NCCIA.

OLX is where Pakistan sells its old phones, bikes, sofas and cars, so it is also where scammers wait. OLX itself says it only connects buyers and sellers and does not handle payments. That means nobody refunds you if a deal goes wrong. We read the OLX Pakistan help centre on 25 October 2026. Here are the seven tricks to know, the checks for each side, and the reporting route.

Seven tricks cover almost every OLX scam

The scams fall into a few patterns that OLX's help pages describe: advance payment for delivery, a price too good to be true, moving the chat to WhatsApp, and shipping before payment. Fake payment messages, code requests and stolen phones complete the list.

OLX shows a "Suspicious User Detected" warning when the person you are about to chat with has been reported or follows known scam patterns. OLX names two of them: asking for advance payment before delivery, and a price too good to be true. Treat that warning as a stop sign.

Seven common OLX scams in Pakistan and the giveaway for each

Buyers stay safe by meeting, checking and paying last

OLX tells buyers to meet the seller in person in a public place, such as a mall, to examine the item before paying, and to hand over money only once happy. Its line is simple: don't buy before you try. Never send an advance for a courier delivery.

  1. Keep the chat on OLX until you meet. OLX says its chat is safer than WhatsApp.
  2. Meet in a busy public place in daylight, ideally with a friend.
  3. Check the item properly. For a phone, check the IMEI and PTA status before paying.
  4. Pay only after the check, in cash or by a transfer you confirm in front of the seller.
  5. Keep the seller's profile, chat and number until the item has worked for a few days.

For phones, OLX has its own help page on checking whether a phone is PTA verified. The steps to check an IMEI number and PTA status take a minute and tell you whether the handset is registered or blocked. A blocked phone becomes your problem the moment you pay.

Sellers stay safe by refusing advance shipping and fake proof

OLX's seller tips say to take cash where you can, hide your personal number from buyers, avoid shipping before payment, especially to international numbers, and keep the chat on OLX. A payment counts only when you see it in your own app.

The fake payment trick goes like this. The "buyer" says the money is sent, and a message arrives that looks like a JazzCash, Easypaisa or bank alert. It often comes from an ordinary mobile number rather than the official sender, and sometimes it is only a screenshot. Open your own app and check the balance before you hand anything over. The checks to verify a JazzCash, Easypaisa or bank payment show what a real credit looks like.

A second version asks you for a code "to confirm the payment" or "to release the money". No real payment ever needs a code from the person receiving it. That code opens your wallet or your WhatsApp to the buyer. Hang up.

OLX's own help centre lists the reporting route

Report the scammer or the ad inside OLX first, then complain to the authorities. OLX says it investigates reports and can share information such as IP addresses and login details with the authorities when they ask. It does not say it will recover money.

To report a user in the app, open the seller's profile, tap the three dots at the top right, choose Report User, pick a reason and add a short description. On the web, use the flag icon on the profile. OLX's page for fraud victims asks you to file with the authorities and to ask them to contact OLX for the scammer's data.

Where to report an OLX scam in Pakistan: OLX report, OLX helpline 0800-10101, bank or wallet, and the NCCIA

If you already paid, call your wallet before you call OLX

Money moves fast, so the first call goes to your bank or wallet helpline to ask for the transfer to be blocked. Then report the user on OLX, save every screenshot, and complain to the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) with the scammer's number and account details.

  1. Call your bank or wallet and report fraud. Ask for a complaint number.
  2. Take screenshots of the ad, the profile, the chat and the payment.
  3. Report the user on OLX and call 0800-10101.
  4. Complain to the NCCIA on 1799 or online, and attach the screenshots.
  5. Report the scammer's mobile number to PTA on 0800-55055.

For JazzCash, the helpline is 4444 from a Jazz number or 111-124-444. For other wallets and banks, use the number in the app. The steps to claim a digital fraud refund explain what your bank must do once you report. If the scam happened at a face-to-face meeting, such as a robbery or a fake note, that is a police matter and needs an FIR.

Common questions

Does OLX refund money lost to a scam?

OLX says payment and delivery are between the buyer and seller. It investigates reports and helps the authorities, but it does not say it refunds anyone.

What is the OLX helpline number in Pakistan?

OLX lists 0800-10101, from 9 am to 9 pm, seven days a week. You can also email help@olx.com.pk or use live chat.

What does "Suspicious User Detected" mean on OLX?

The other person has been reported or matches known scam patterns, such as asking for advance payment. Stop chatting and block them.

Is it safe to pay an OLX seller by JazzCash or Easypaisa?

Only after you have seen and checked the item in person. Never send an advance for courier delivery to a stranger.

A buyer sent a payment screenshot. Can I hand over the item?

Not until the money shows in your own app. Screenshots and SMS messages are easy to fake.

Where do I complain about an OLX fraud in Pakistan?

Report the user on OLX, call your bank or wallet, and complain to the NCCIA on 1799 or at complaint.nccia.gov.pk.

How we verified this

What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.

We read the OLX Pakistan help centre articles on seller safety tips, buying safely, "Suspicious User Detected", reporting a user, fraud victims and contacting OLX on 25 October 2026. The JazzCash helpline was read on its contact page the same day. NCCIA and PTA details come from our earlier reads of their sites. We could not open OLX's page "How do I know if it's a Fraud?", which was behind a bot check, so the seven tricks combine OLX's named patterns with common payment scams we cover elsewhere.
