Pakistan took over as chair of the Intergovernmental Group of Twenty-Four (G-24) on 1 November 2026, and will host the group's Technical Group Meeting in February 2027. Finance Minister Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb set out three priorities on the first day and was briefed on the chair's duties by the G-24 Secretariat on 4 November.

The G-24 is a group of developing countries from Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean. It speaks for them on how the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank are run and how they lend. Pakistan takes over from Nigeria.

We read both official releases on the Press Information Department (PID) site on 5 November 2026: the 1 November statement and the 4 November briefing. This page sets out what the chair does, what Pakistan says it wants, and what it means for people at home.

Key dates of Pakistan's G-24 chairmanship from November 2026 to the 2027 IMF and World Bank meetings

Pakistan chairs the G-24 from 1 November 2026

Pakistan formally assumed the G-24 chair on 1 November 2026. The finance minister called it a profound responsibility and said the group would work "from collective voice to collective influence, and from collective influence to meaningful progress".

The chair leads the group's meetings, steers its work programme and speaks for it in talks with the IMF and World Bank. The G-24 holds ministerial meetings alongside the IMF and World Bank Spring and Annual Meetings, so Pakistan's finance minister will lead those sessions during the term.

The releases do not state how long the term lasts. We have not found that on an official page, so we do not give an end date here.

Aurangzeb named three priorities for the chairmanship

The finance minister listed three priorities: put development at the centre of world economic policy, make the IMF and World Bank more representative of their members, and build a financial system that gives developing countries affordable money and debt solutions.

PriorityWhat the release says it covers
1. Development firstStability as a base for investment, jobs and growth, not only crisis management
2. Fairer institutionsMore equitable governance and a bigger say for members in IMF and World Bank decisions
3. Better financingAffordable and timely development finance, sustainable debt solutions, stronger safety nets
Also namedClimate resilience and more public and private capital for developing countries
Working styleConsultation, consensus and collective advocacy across members

He also said reforming economies need enough financing and policy space to grow, drawing on Pakistan's own recent stabilisation.

Pakistan will host the G-24 Technical Group Meeting in February 2027

At the 4 November briefing, Dr Iyabo Masha, Director of the G-24 Secretariat, told the finance minister about the group's structure, research agenda and work programme. Saif Ullah Dogar, Senior Advisor to the Executive Director at the IMF, also took part.

The main event ahead is the G-24 Technical Group Meeting, which Pakistan is expected to host in February 2027. Technical meetings prepare the analysis that ministers later discuss. The finance minister asked for early preparation and broad participation.

The steps of the year, as the releases describe them:

  1. 1 November 2026: Pakistan takes the chair and states its three priorities.
  2. 4 November 2026: the G-24 Secretariat briefs the finance minister.
  3. February 2027: Pakistan hosts the Technical Group Meeting.
  4. Spring 2027: G-24 ministers meet alongside the IMF and World Bank Spring Meetings.
  5. Annual Meetings 2027: G-24 ministers meet again, as they do each year.

The chair brings a voice, not a loan

Chairing the G-24 does not bring Pakistan any money by itself, and it does not change the terms of Pakistan's own IMF programme. What it gives is a platform: Pakistan sets the group's agenda and speaks for developing countries at the IMF and World Bank.

The subjects it will push are the ones that matter to Pakistan's own budget. Debt costs, the price of borrowing and access to climate money all shape how much the government can spend at home. The IMF's latest view of Pakistan is in our report on the IMF October 2026 outlook.

The last IMF and World Bank Annual Meetings, held in Bangkok in October, show how these talks work in practice. Our summary of what Pakistan agreed in Bangkok covers the deals made there.

What to watch during the term

Three things will show whether the chairmanship achieves anything: the agenda Pakistan publishes for the February meeting, the G-24 statements issued at the 2027 Spring and Annual Meetings, and any progress on IMF voting reform and debt relief.

The finance minister said the chair's success "will not simply be the strength of our voice, but the difference that voice makes". That is a fair test, and it can be checked against the communiques the group issues.

We will add the Technical Group Meeting date and agenda when they are published.
