Short answer: The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) is reported to be launching the Pakistan Hockey League (PHL) in Islamabad on Wednesday 14 October 2026. The first season is planned for 2027, with six to eight franchise teams and foreign players alongside Pakistanis. Team names, owners, venues and match dates have not been announced.

Pakistan's hockey has had a hard year. The men's team missed the Asian Champions Trophy and must come through a qualifier for the Olympics. A franchise league is the federation's answer for how to give players more matches at home. On 14 October we find out how much of that plan is real.

We could not open a PHF page that carries the announcement on 12 October 2026, so everything below is marked as reported. We checked the dates against the other hockey coverage on this site and found nothing that contradicts them.

The PHL launch is set for 14 October in Islamabad

The PHF is reported to be holding the formal launch of the Pakistan Hockey League in Islamabad on 14 October 2026. The event is the start of the league project, not a match. The inaugural season is planned for 2027.

That date is two days from today. The launch is a presentation, so expect names, logos and plans, not fixtures. The PHF has not published a venue inside Islamabad or a start time for the launch.

Summary of the reported Pakistan Hockey League launch plan: 14 October, Islamabad, season in 2027

Six to eight franchise teams are likely in the first season

The reported plan is for the first season to have six to eight franchise teams. A franchise is a team run by a private owner who pays the league for the right to enter it. Players are then signed to those teams, usually through a draft or an auction.

The PHF says the league will try to bring in private owners and company sponsors. That is the main change from past hockey events in Pakistan, which were run and paid for by the federation or by government bodies. The word "likely" matters: the number of teams is not final.

We have not seen a list of cities or franchise names. Until the PHF names them, any list of teams you see on social media is a guess.

Foreign players are expected to play alongside Pakistanis

The plan reported by the PHF is that leading international players will be contracted to play with Pakistani players. The stated aim is that Pakistani players train and compete next to foreign players and learn modern professional habits.

The PHF has also said Pakistani coaches and managers could work with international experts in coaching, sports science and league operations. This is a stated goal. No foreign player, coach or fee has been named.

For a Pakistani player, the practical question is how many local places each team must keep. That rule has not been published. It decides whether the league helps young players or mostly helps established names.

Mediacast holds the league rights

The PHF is reported to have awarded the league rights to Mediacast after a competitive bidding process earlier this year. The rights holder usually runs the commercial side: selling franchises, sponsorship, broadcast and digital content.

The PHF lists the commercial areas it hopes to open up: broadcasting, digital content, merchandise, advertising, hospitality, ticketing and grassroots programmes. No ticket price or broadcaster has been named.

This is the same pattern used in cricket. Our PSL 12 dates article shows how a franchise league there moves from dates to signings, retention and an auction, in that order. Hockey has none of those steps announced yet.

What the PHL has to fix in Pakistani hockey

The league arrives while the national team is out of the main international events. Pakistan is not in the Asian Champions Trophy this year, as our report on Bangladesh taking Pakistan's place explains.

The road to the Olympics is also long. Pakistan needs to finish in the top two of an eight-team qualifier in early 2028, as our guide to Pakistan's route to LA28 sets out. A domestic league can give players more match time before that.

The ranking points for that qualifier come from international matches, though, not from league games. A franchise league helps skills and income. It does not by itself change the world ranking.

  1. Wait for the PHF to confirm the launch time and venue on 14 October.
  2. Read the list of franchises and owners when it is published.
  3. Check how many places in each squad are kept for Pakistani players.
  4. Look for dates, venues and the player auction or draft rules.
  5. Do not pay anyone for a "PHL trial" or "PHL registration" until the PHF names its own process.
Five things to check after the Pakistan Hockey League launch on 14 October

What has not been announced yet

Most of what fans want to know is still open. The PHF has not published team names, owners, home cities, match venues, the 2027 start date, ticket prices, a broadcaster, or how players will be selected. It has not said how many foreign players each team may field.

These are the usual details released at or after a launch. If they are missing on 14 October, treat the season as an intention, not a schedule.

Common questions

When is the Pakistan Hockey League launch?

The launch is reported for Wednesday 14 October 2026 in Islamabad. The first season is planned for 2027, not this year.

How many teams will play in the PHL?

The first season is likely to have six to eight franchise teams. The number has not been confirmed, and no team has been named.

Will foreign players play in the PHL?

Leading international players are expected to be contracted alongside Pakistani players. No foreign player has been named and the number allowed per team is not published.

Who owns the PHL rights?

The PHF is reported to have awarded the league rights to Mediacast after a bidding process. Franchise owners are separate and have not been named.

Can I buy PHL tickets now?

No. No match, venue or ticket seller has been announced. Do not pay anyone claiming to sell PHL tickets or trial places.

Does the PHL change Pakistan's Olympic hopes?

Not directly. The Olympic route depends on the FIH world ranking and a qualifier in 2028. A league can improve players over time, but it adds no ranking points.

How we verified this

What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.

We last checked on 12 October 2026. The launch date, the 2027 season, the six to eight teams and the Mediacast rights are from the PHF's announcement as reported. We could not read a PHF page, so every one of these points is marked as reported. We did not find a published list of teams, owners or venues. For the Olympic route we used the Asian Hockey Federation and the FIH pages cited in our LA28 guide.
