Pakistan Hockey's Road to LA28 Olympics: Finish Top 2 in an 8-Team Qualifier
Pakistan hockey is not yet in the LA28 Olympics. It must finish top two in an eight-team FIH qualifier in early 2028. See the route, ranking and dates.

Pakistan's men's hockey team has not qualified for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics yet, but it is still in the race. As Asian Games bronze medallists, Pakistan go to the FIH Olympic Qualification Tournaments in early 2028. There are two tournaments of eight teams each, and only the top two in each one earn a place.
The Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) confirmed this on 6 October 2026. India won the Asian Games gold in Japan and qualified directly. Malaysia, Pakistan, Korea, Japan, China and Bangladesh all move to the qualifiers instead.
We read the AHF notice, the FIH's official LA28 qualification system (the version dated 4 June 2026) and the FIH world ranking on 10 October. Here is the route, in plain terms, and where Pakistan stands on it.
Pakistan must finish in the top two of an eight-team qualifier
Pakistan's only realistic route to LA28 is an FIH Olympic Qualification Tournament in early 2028. Each one has eight teams in two pools of four, then semi-finals and a final. The two finalists qualify. So Pakistan need to win a semi-final against a strong side.
The FIH says the format will match the 2024 qualifiers. Two pools of four play each other once. The top teams go to the semi-finals, and both semi-final winners book an Olympic place. The final decides only the order.
That means one game matters most: the semi-final. Lose it, and only one rare case, explained below, can still help.

Twelve teams will play men's hockey at LA28, and eleven places are earned
The men's Olympic hockey tournament has 12 teams. The United States gets one place as host. Two places go through the FIH Pro League, five through the continental championships, and four through the two qualifiers. Pakistan has already used its continental chance at the Asian Games.
| Route | Places | Pakistan's position |
|---|---|---|
| Host nation (United States) | 1 | Not applicable |
| FIH Pro League, Seasons 7 and 8 | 2 | Finished 9th of 9 in Season 7 (2025-26) |
| Continental championships | 5 | Asia's place went to India, the Asian Games winners |
| FIH Olympic Qualification Tournaments | 4 | Pakistan is in, as Asian Games bronze medallists |
| Total | 12 | Two places per qualifier are open |
The FIH Pro League standings for 2025-26 list Belgium first and Pakistan ninth, last of the nine men's teams. The FIH's release on the 2026-27 season, which starts on 8 December 2026 in Argentina, names France as the men's team joining after promotion. It does not set out the full men's list, so we do not state whether Pakistan plays in Season 8.
The other continental places are decided in 2027: the African Hockey Road to LA28, the Pan American Games, the EuroHockey Championship and the Oceania Cup.
Pakistan ranks 12th in the world, ahead of its Asian rivals
The FIH men's world ranking we read on 10 October puts Pakistan 12th with 2,555.60 points. Malaysia is 14th, Japan 16th, Korea 20th, China 21st and Bangladesh 27th. India is 8th. Ranking matters because it decides how the 16 qualifier teams are split between the two tournaments.
| Team | FIH world rank | Points | LA28 status |
|---|---|---|---|
| India | 8 | 3,145.98 | Qualified directly |
| Pakistan | 12 | 2,555.60 | Olympic qualifier |
| Malaysia | 14 | 2,527.58 | Olympic qualifier |
| Japan | 16 | 2,338.64 | Olympic qualifier |
| Korea | 20 | 2,145.34 | Olympic qualifier |

Pakistan's lead over Malaysia is only 28 points by our count. One bad series could swap them. The table is a snapshot, not a seeding list, because the FIH fixes the qualifier order much later.
The FIH uses a snake system, so ranking at the end of 2027 decides the draw
The 16 qualifier teams are ranked by the FIH world ranking at midnight on the last day of the final 2027 continental championship. Teams ranked 1, 4, 5, 8, 9, 12, 13 and 16 go to Tournament A. Teams ranked 2, 3, 6, 7, 10, 11, 14 and 15 go to Tournament B.
So the draw is not random. A higher ranking puts Pakistan in a more favourable spot in its pool. That is why every international match between now and late 2027 counts, and why missing a tournament has a cost.
Pakistan will not play the Asian Champions Trophy in India this month, where Malaysia, Japan and Korea will all play. Those are five games against the same rivals that Pakistan may meet in a qualifier. Fewer games also mean fewer chances to gain ranking points.
How the rest of the LA28 qualifying process works, step by step
The FIH sends invitations after the last continental championship of 2027 ends. The qualifiers follow in early 2028. Results are confirmed in writing within 14 days of the last qualifier, and national Olympic committees then have 14 more days to accept.
- Now to 2027: teams play tests, tours and events that move the world ranking.
- During 2027: Africa, the Americas, Europe and Oceania hold their continental championships.
- After the last of those ends: the FIH ranks the 16 qualifier teams and splits them by the snake system.
- Early 2028: two eight-team Olympic qualifiers are played. The top two in each qualify.
- Within 14 days: the FIH confirms the places to each national Olympic committee.
There is one rare extra place. If the United States also wins a Pro League place or the Pan American Games, a fifth qualifier place opens. It goes to the higher-ranked of the two teams that finish third in the qualifiers.

Pakistan earned its qualifier spot the hard way. After a 4-3 semi-final loss to India, the team came from behind to beat Korea 5-3 for bronze. The full Asian Games hockey results show every game of that run.
Common questions
Has Pakistan qualified for hockey at the 2028 Olympics?
Not yet. Pakistan has a place in the FIH Olympic Qualification Tournaments in early 2028, and must finish in the top two there to qualify.
Why did India qualify directly but Pakistan did not?
The Asian Games gave one direct place to Asia's champion. India won gold, so India qualified. The other Asian teams, Pakistan included, go to the qualifiers.
When are the hockey Olympic qualifiers for LA28?
In early 2028, according to the FIH qualification system. Exact dates and hosts have not been published yet.
How many teams qualify from each Olympic qualifier?
Two. Each qualifier has eight teams, and the two finalists earn Olympic places. A rare fifth place can go to a third-placed team.
What is Pakistan's FIH world ranking?
12th, with 2,555.60 points, when we checked on 10 October 2026. Malaysia was 14th, Japan 16th and Korea 20th.
Can Pakistan qualify through the Pro League?
Only the top team in each Pro League season qualifies. Pakistan finished ninth of nine in 2025-26, so this route is not realistic.
