Pakistan lost 4-3 to India in the Asian Games 2026 men's hockey semi-final on Thursday 1 October. India led 2-0 after the first quarter. Pakistan fought back to 3-3 in the last quarter, then India scored again to win.

So Pakistan now play for bronze on Saturday 3 October at 12:30 pm PKT, against the loser of Malaysia and Korea. India go into the gold medal match at 3:00 pm PKT. We followed the game on the official Asian Games 2026 results system from 12:30 pm PKT and read the final record after it was marked official, at about 2:15 pm PKT.

It was the first meeting of the two sides at these Games, and it went down to the last quarter.

Waheed Rana, Hannan Shahid and Abu Mahmood scored for Pakistan

Pakistan's three goals came from Waheed Rana, Hannan Shahid and captain Abu Mahmood. Rana and Shahid scored from open play. Abu Mahmood scored from a penalty corner, which is a set piece awarded for a foul near the goal.

Rana's goal was the equaliser in the fourth quarter. On our checks of the live feed, the score was India 3-2 at about 1:44 pm PKT and 3-3 by 1:48 pm PKT, with Rana now listed as a scorer. The official record does not give goal minutes, so we cannot say which of the other two Pakistan goals came first.

Rana also scored three in the 7-2 pool win over Oman on 28 September. He was Pakistan's man for the big moments again.

Harmanpreet Singh's two penalty corners gave India the early lead

India's captain Harmanpreet Singh scored twice from penalty corners, and Sukhjeet Singh added a field goal. Those three goals came in the first half, when India led 2-0 and then 3-1. Abhishek scored India's winner in the fourth quarter, after Pakistan had drawn level.

The slow start cost Pakistan. They lost the first quarter 2-0 and then won the rest of the game 3-2. Against a side that scored 49 goals in five pool games, giving away two early goals is hard to recover from.

Two cards were shown. Pakistan's Ammad Butt got a yellow card, which means at least five minutes off the pitch. India's Dilpreet Singh got a green card, which means two minutes off. The official record does not say when either card came.

Pakistan play for bronze on Saturday at 12:30 pm PKT

Both possible opponents are familiar. Malaysia beat Pakistan 5-4 in the pool on 26 September, Pakistan's only loss before today. Korea finished second in Pool A and lost 8-2 to India.

The defeat makes an Olympic place through these Games unlikely

Asian Games gold carries a place at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics under the rules of the FIH, the world hockey body. Pakistan can now finish no higher than third, so the direct route is very likely gone.

The FIH rule gives the place to the highest placed team that has not already qualified. On our reading, it would reach the bronze medallist only if both finalists had qualified some other way.

A bronze would still be Pakistan's first hockey medal at these Games. The country's medal count so far is in the Pakistan Asian Games 2026 medal tally.

How we verified this

What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.

Last checked at about 2:15 pm PKT on Thursday 1 October 2026. The result, the score by quarter, every scorer, the cards, the penalty corner and shot counts, and the bronze and gold match times come from the official Asian Games 2026 results system, where the Men's Semifinal 1 record was marked official. We polled the same record during the game, which is how we know Pakistan equalised before India's winner. Goal minutes were not published. Pakistan times are Japan times minus four hours. The Olympic rule is from the FIH LA 2028 qualification system, as read for our earlier hockey coverage, and we did not check which teams have already qualified.
