Short answer: Pakistan have already qualified for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2028 in Australia and New Zealand. The tournament keeps 20 teams but changes shape: five groups of four, a Super 10 round, then a new Eliminators round before the semi-finals. The ICC Board has endorsed the format, and final approval is due at its November meetings.

Pakistan did not have to play a qualifier for 2028. They earned the place in February 2026, by reaching the Super Eights of the last World Cup. That settled the 2028 field for 12 teams, Pakistan included.

We read two ICC releases for this page. One is "New Men's T20 World Cup format and qualification explained", dated 15 July 2026. The other is the ICC's media release of 18 February 2026 on the 2028 places.

Pakistan qualified by reaching the Super Eights in 2026

The ICC rule was simple: every team that reached the Super Eights of the 2026 T20 World Cup earned a place in 2028, and so did the two co-hosts. Pakistan's win over Namibia completed the Super Eights line-up, and the team advanced from Group A with India.

That gave nine places: the eight Super Eights teams, New Zealand among them, and the co-host Australia. The next three highest-ranked teams in the T20I rankings on 9 March filled the list to 12.

Group of placesTeams
Super Eights in 2026Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, West Indies, England, South Africa, New Zealand
Co-hostsAustralia, New Zealand
Next highest-rankedBangladesh, Afghanistan, Ireland

That is 12 teams in all: Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, Ireland, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, West Indies and Zimbabwe.

How the 12 automatic teams qualified for the 2028 T20 World Cup, including Pakistan

Five groups of four replace four groups of five

The 2028 group stage has five groups of four teams. The 2026 event had four groups of five. The top two from each group, ten teams, go through to a Super 10 stage. The group stage has 30 matches.

This helps the new nations, because the ICC says the change widens the places in the second stage for emerging teams. It also means each team plays three group games, not four.

A new Eliminators round decides the last two semi-final places

The Super 10 is two groups of five, played round-robin over 20 matches. The winner of each group goes straight to the semi-finals. The second and third teams in each group then meet the other group's second and third in the new Eliminators.

The ICC explains the pairing: second-placed teams from each Super 10 group face the third-placed teams from the opposite group. The two winners complete the semi-final line-up. The semi-finals and final follow the existing format.

Adding those up gives 55 matches. That is our arithmetic from the ICC's counts. The ICC release does not state a total.

Eight more places go through a Global Qualifier

The other eight places go to teams that come through a Global Qualifier. The ICC names eight sides that go straight into it: Canada, Italy, Namibia, Nepal, Netherlands, Oman, the UAE and the USA. Scotland go straight to the Europe Regional Final.

Regional events fill the rest of the Global Qualifier. The ICC lists the regional places as two from Africa, two from Asia, two from Europe, one from the Americas and one from East Asia-Pacific.

From the Global Qualifier, the highest-placed team from each region qualifies, and so do the next three highest-placed teams overall. The ICC adds "subject to minimum performance criteria", and has not said what they are.

Pakistan's own road to the 2028 and 2027 events

The 2028 T20 World Cup follows the 50-over World Cup in Africa in 2027, which has its own new format with a Super 7 round. Pakistan's schedule for that event, including the India game in Johannesburg, is set out in Pakistan's Cricket World Cup 2027 schedule.

Pakistan's T20 form matters for a second reason, the Olympics. The same rankings that pick the LA28 places are set out in Pakistan men's LA28 cricket route.

  1. 2026 T20 World Cup, Super Eights: earned Pakistan a 2028 place.
  2. 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.
  3. 2028 LA28 Olympics, cricket from 12 July.
  4. 2028 T20 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, dates not announced.
