How Pakistan’s Men Can Qualify for Cricket at the LA28 Olympics: Rankings, Then a 2027 Qualifier
Pakistan’s men have no LA28 cricket place yet. See how the six places are set, why India holds Asia’s on 12 October rankings and how the 2027 qualifier works.

Short answer: Pakistan's men have no Olympic place yet. Four places go to the best-ranked eligible team in Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania on 31 December 2026, and India leads Asia. The USA take a fifth as hosts. The sixth place is decided at the ICC Olympics Qualifier in 2027, where Pakistan are placed to play on today's table.
Cricket returns to the Olympics in 2028 for the first time since Paris in 1900. Six men's teams will play a T20 tournament in Los Angeles. Pakistan want one of those six places.
We read the ICC's media release on the qualification pathway, dated 29 June 2026, and the ICC's men's T20I team rankings table dated 12 October 2026. The rankings and the release are the only sources for what follows.
Six teams play the men's T20 event at LA28
The men's and women's T20 events each have six teams, with up to 15 players in a squad. They run from 12 to 29 July 2028 at the Fairgrounds in Pomona, outside Los Angeles. The men's medal match is on 29 July.
The ICC says Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania are all guaranteed a place. Five places are decided by existing ICC events and T20I rankings. The sixth goes to the new ICC Olympics Qualifier in 2027.
| Place | How it is decided |
|---|---|
| Africa | Highest-ranked eligible team on 31 December 2026 |
| Asia | Highest-ranked eligible team on 31 December 2026 |
| Europe | Highest-ranked eligible team on 31 December 2026 |
| Oceania | Highest-ranked eligible team on 31 December 2026 |
| Host nation | USA, if in the top 15 at any time from 30 June to 31 December 2026 |
| Sixth place | ICC Olympics Qualifier, 2027, eight nations |

India leads Asia, 28 rating points ahead of Pakistan
The ICC table of 12 October 2026 has India second on 269 and Pakistan sixth on 241. One place goes to the top Asian side on 31 December, so Pakistan would need to pass India by then. That is a gap of 28 rating points.
The ICC capped the women's places at one per continent, and the men's wording points the same way: the highest-ranked eligible team from each of the four continents. England are first on 269, joint with India, and lead Europe. Australia, third on 260, lead Oceania, which puts New Zealand outside the direct places. South Africa, fifth on 243, lead Africa.
| Team | Continent | Rank | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| England | Europe | 1 | 269 |
| India | Asia | 2 | 269 |
| Australia | Oceania | 3 | 260 |
| New Zealand | Oceania | 4 | 247 |
| South Africa | Africa | 5 | 243 |
| Pakistan | Asia | 6 | 241 |
The sixth-place standing is explained in full in Pakistan's place in the T20I team rankings. The rating moves with every T20I, and Pakistan's third match against Sri Lanka is on 13 October.

Pakistan's likely route is the 2027 ICC Olympics Qualifier
The ICC says the other seven teams in the qualifier are "the next highest-ranked teams" on the T20I rankings, leaving out any side that has already qualified. If the table stayed as it is, Pakistan would be among them. That is our reading of the rule, not an ICC statement.
The ICC release does not give the date on which that list is fixed, and it has not named a host or dates for the qualifier. It says "information on dates and a host nation will follow".
On the 12 October table, with England, India, Australia, South Africa and the USA taken out, the next teams are New Zealand, Pakistan, West Indies, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Ireland. The West Indies are a special case, which we explain next.
The West Indies cannot take an Olympic place under their own name
The ICC says the West Indies are a composite team of several Caribbean nations and are not an Olympic National Olympic Committee. They cannot get a quota place. If they are among the eight highest-ranked sides not yet qualified on 31 December 2026, a Caribbean Qualifier decides which nation goes to the ICC qualifier.
For Pakistan, that matters only a little. It could change who fills the eight places, but not Pakistan's own position on the table.
What Pakistan fans should watch before 31 December
Three things decide the picture. The USA must stay inside the top 15 during the window. The rating gap between Pakistan, South Africa and New Zealand must hold or change. And the qualifier's host and dates must be announced.
- Check the ICC men's T20I table after every Pakistan match.
- Note the rating of India, since India holds the Asian place.
- Check that the USA stay in the top 15 before 31 December 2026.
- Watch for the ICC announcement of the qualifier's dates and host.
- Compare with hockey, where Pakistan's route also runs through a qualifier, in Pakistan hockey's road to LA28.

The women's route is different, because four places were already filled at the Women's T20 World Cup. Pakistan's women are placed in the second wave, as covered in the women's LA28 qualification route.
