PIA Baggage Rules in Pakistan: 7 kg Cabin Bag, Golf Bags, Cartons and Excess Baggage
PIA allows one 7 kg cabin bag, and your ticket sets the checked allowance. See golf, carton and Zamzam rules, banned items and how to buy extra kilos early.

On PIA, economy passengers can carry one 7 kg cabin bag, 38 cm by 22 cm by 55 cm, on domestic and international flights. A checked bag can be at most 158 cm. Your checked weight depends on the allowance printed on your ticket, and excess baggage bought in advance, at least 5 kg at a time, is cheaper than paying at the counter.
The queue at the check-in desk is the wrong place to learn that your carton is too big. Staff there can refuse it, and the only fix is to repack on the floor. We read PIA's baggage guide and its advance excess baggage page on 11 October 2026. Below are the numbers that matter, the items PIA bans, and how to pay less for extra kilos.
Your ticket sets the checked allowance, not a general rule
PIA states that its baggage policy uses both a piece concept and a weight concept. The allowance on your own ticket is the one that applies. That means two passengers on the same flight can have different limits.
Read the baggage line on your e-ticket before you pack. Do not borrow a number from a friend's trip. If the ticket shows a number of pieces, each piece has a weight cap. If it shows a total weight, you can split it across bags.
For a comparison with other domestic airlines, see the domestic baggage allowance of five airlines. PIA's own limits for cabin bags and special items are below.

The cabin bag limit is 7 kg and 115 cm in total
PIA allows one cabin bag of 7 kg in Economy and in Executive Economy. The page gives the size as 38 cm long, 22 cm wide and 55 cm high, which adds up to 115 cm. The same limit applies on domestic and international flights.
Some items ride free on top of your allowance, subject to the operator's rule: one laptop, 5 litres of Zamzam water, a baby push chair, a wheelchair and sports kits. The Zamzam rule has its own steps in the guide to carrying Zamzam home.
One trap. Except for flights to the USA and Canada, an extra piece inside your free allowance is accepted only if you pay a 4 kg excess baggage ticket for it. A waiver is possible only at the discretion of the PIA representative and only if the flight can handle it.
Golf bags, carton boxes and musical instruments have their own rules
Special items are where passengers get surprised. PIA's rules are exact.
| Item | PIA rule |
|---|---|
| Golf bag within free allowance | No charge |
| Golf bag over the allowance (weight system) | A flat 6 kg charge for the first 15 kg, normal excess rate beyond 15 kg |
| Golf bag over the allowance (piece system) | 50% of the normal excess charge, one bag per passenger |
| Golf bag size limit | 190 cm by 75 cm by 65 cm |
| Sports and medical equipment | Treated as normal checked baggage |
| Musical instruments | No special free allowance |
| Carton box | Up to 140 cm in total and 32 kg, inside your free allowance |
A worked example from PIA: a golfer carries two bags of 15 kg each, 30 kg in all. The first 15 kg is charged as 6 kg of excess. The next 15 kg is charged at the normal per-kilo rate.
Oversized cartons are not accepted at the check-in counter. Cartons must be sealed and secured to the staff's satisfaction. A television that is out of gauge may be accepted within your free allowance, but PIA lists mandatory charges for it. Ask PIA for the amount before you bring one to the airport.
PIA also refuses irregular bags: round bags, bags tied with loose rope or string, bags with loose straps and bags wrapped in a blanket. Pack in a proper case or a carton.
Banned items differ for hand and checked bags
PIA bans these in checked baggage: explosives and fireworks, gas and aerosols, poisons and pesticides, lithium batteries and other hazardous materials, hoverboards and self-balancing scooters, paints and adhesives, safety matches and easily ignited solids, radioactive material, corrosives such as mercury and wet cell batteries, and lighters of every kind.
PIA bans these in hand baggage: knives of any type, scissors and other sharp or bladed items, including nail clippers and ice picks.
Lithium batteries are the confusing one. They are banned in checked bags, so spare power banks must go in the cabin. The rules for them are in the power bank guide for flights from Pakistan.
Buy excess baggage in advance and pay less
PIA sells advance excess baggage at a concessional rate. You can buy it from the time you buy the ticket until 4 hours before departure. Inside 4 hours, the standard excess rate applies at the airport.
- Work out the weight you need beyond your free allowance.
- Buy in blocks. The minimum is 5 kg, then multiples of 5 kg.
- Buy online, at a PIA booking office or through a sales agent. The service runs on selected domestic and international routes.
- Check the route cap. PIA sets a maximum for each route.
- Keep the receipt. If you change the ticket or PIA changes the flight, PIA refunds the advance baggage fee without extra charges.

The price is not printed on the page. PIA says charges change with fare conditions, service choices and taxes, and show during the booking process. So compare the advance price with the counter price before you commit.
If a bag is lost or damaged on arrival, the claim steps are in how to claim lost baggage at a Pakistani airport. PIA also tells passengers not to leave cash, jewellery, important documents or other valuables in checked bags.

How we verified this
What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.
Last checked on 11 October 2026. The limits come from the PIA baggage guide and the advance purchase excess baggage page. We did not see per-kilo excess rates, which PIA shows only while booking. The page gives 158 cm as the maximum size of a checked bag without saying how it is measured. Your ticket's own allowance always comes first. Call PIA on 111-786-786 to confirm a special item.
