PIA online check-in opens 24 hours before a domestic flight. Use the Web Check-In section of piac.com.pk or the PIA mobile app, with your booking reference (PNR) and surname. It works only on selected domestic routes, and you still drop checked bags at the airport counter.

One rule catches people out. Once you check in online, PIA treats the ticket as non-refundable and non-changeable, unless the flight itself is cancelled. So check in only when your plans are fixed.

We read PIA's Digital Check-In page, its frequently asked questions and both of its step-by-step process documents, for the website and for the app, on 3 October 2026. We did not hold a ticket, so we did not check in ourselves. Two of PIA's own pages give different closing and reporting times, and we show both below.

PIA online check-in opens 24 hours before departure

You can check in online from 24 hours before your scheduled departure. PIA's two pages disagree on when it closes: the Digital Check-In page says three hours before departure, while the FAQ says six hours. Check in before the six hour mark to be safe.

Where the two pages differ, we follow the stricter one. Aim to be at the counter 90 minutes before departure, even without bags. Security queues come before the counter, and they are not counted in either figure.

Only selected domestic PIA routes allow online check-in

PIA offers web and mobile check-in only on flights between Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar, Quetta, Multan, Faisalabad and Skardu. International flights, including London, Manchester and Gulf routes, are not on PIA's list, so those passengers check in at the airport counter.

Both ends of your flight must be on that list. A Karachi to Skardu flight qualifies. A route to a city outside the eight, or any flight abroad, does not.

Some passengers cannot use the online route at all. PIA says anyone who needs special services, such as a wheelchair or other assistance, must check in at the counter. You also need a confirmed ticket. A booking on hold, waiting for payment, will not work. If you are still at that stage, paying for a PIA ticket online comes first.

How to check in online for a PIA flight, step by step

The process takes seven steps on the website and the app. You enter your PNR and surname, type a four-digit code that PIA emails you, confirm your CNIC or passport, accept the rules, take a seat and save the boarding pass.

Five main steps to check in online for a PIA domestic flight
  1. Open piac.com.pk and go to Web Check-In, or open the PIA app on Android or iPhone and tap Online Check-in on the home screen.
  2. Enter your PNR, the booking reference on your ticket, and your surname. PIA's FAQ says the e-ticket number and surname also work.
  3. Check your email. PIA sends a four-digit code to the address on the booking. Enter it to get in.
  4. Select the flight, then the passenger. Confirm or fill in the CNIC or passport number and date of birth exactly as printed on the document.
  5. Read and accept the online check-in rules and the dangerous goods notice. These list items you cannot carry.
  6. Accept the free seat the system gives you, or pick another seat and pay for it. You can add extra baggage or lounge access here too, or skip it.
  7. Review the details and confirm. The boarding pass appears on screen. Print it, save it to your phone gallery, or send the link to yourself by SMS or email.

Read the seat screen with care. The free seat is assigned automatically. Tap a different seat and the system quotes a charge. On the website, a cancel button beside the seat number removes a paid seat you picked by mistake. On the app, PIA says you must close the session and start again. Exit row seats cannot be chosen online at all.

When the screen shows "Successfully Checked In Passenger(s)", you are done online.

You still visit the PIA counter at the airport

An online boarding pass does not take you straight to the gate. PIA says you must show your original CNIC or passport, your ticket and the online boarding pass at the check-in counter, where you receive a physical boarding card. Checked bags are dropped there too.

Bring the original document, not a photocopy or a photo on your phone. For a domestic flight, an adult usually uses the CNIC. Overseas Pakistanis flying on a NICOP should check its date before leaving home, because an expired NICOP at boarding can stop you at the counter.

PIA's cabin bag limit is 7 kg, within 115 cm in total size. Your checked allowance is printed on your ticket and depends on the fare. Spare lithium batteries and power banks cannot go in checked bags, and e-cigarettes must travel in the cabin. The wider power bank rules for flights in Pakistan apply at the security check as well.

If you only have a cabin bag, the online route saves the most time. If you have suitcases, you still queue, but at a shorter bag drop.

Online check-in locks your PIA ticket

After you check in online, PIA says you cannot cancel, refund or change your travel date unless the flight is cancelled. The ticket becomes non-refundable and non-changeable. A paid seat is also non-refundable, even if PIA moves you after an aircraft change.

What happens to a PIA ticket after online check-in: no refund or date change

This is the biggest reason to wait. If there is any chance you will move the trip, change the date first through My Booking, then check in. Change fees still apply to that change, as they do to any PIA booking.

If PIA cancels the flight, the lock lifts. PIA says the refund must be claimed from wherever the ticket was issued: your travel agent, a PIA office, or the PIA website. If the aircraft type changes, PIA tries to keep your seat but does not guarantee it.

Common PIA online check-in problems and fixes

Most failures come from the route, the timing, a mismatch in your name or document details, or a missing email code. PIA's own fix for any failed boarding pass is simple: go to the airport check-in counter before the flight closes and get the pass issued there.

ProblemLikely causeWhat to do
Booking not foundWrong PNR, or surname spelt differently from the ticketCopy both exactly from the e-ticket email
Check-in not offeredRoute not on the list, international flight, or outside the windowCheck in at the airport counter
No four-digit codeEmail on the booking is old or wrongCheck spam, then call PIA to correct the email
Passenger cannot be checked inSpecial services on the booking, or unconfirmed ticketUse the airport counter
Boarding pass not issued or not printedSession failed at the last stepReport to the airport check-in counter

For booking and email fixes, PIA's call centre is (+92-21) 111-786-786. If your flight is cancelled, retimed or leaves within three hours, PIA lists a separate number, +92-330-0786-786. Before you leave home, tracking your flight in Pakistan shows whether it is running on time.

One honest warning. We could not test the system with a live ticket. If a screen differs from these steps on the day, PIA's own process documents are the ones to follow.

Common questions

Can I check in online for a PIA international flight?

No. PIA lists online check-in only for domestic flights between Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar, Quetta, Multan, Faisalabad and Skardu. International passengers check in at the airport.

How early can I check in online with PIA?

From 24 hours before departure. PIA's pages give the closing time as either three or six hours before departure, so finish before the six hour mark.

Is PIA online check-in free?

Yes. The seat the system assigns is free. You pay only if you choose a different seat, extra baggage or lounge access during check-in.

Do I need to print the PIA boarding pass?

No. You can save it to your phone or send it by SMS or email. You still show it with your original CNIC or passport at the counter for a physical boarding card.

Can I get a refund after checking in online?

Only if PIA cancels the flight. Otherwise the ticket is non-refundable and non-changeable once you check in online.

What if my bag is too heavy at the PIA counter?

You pay excess baggage at the counter, or repack. The airline baggage allowance in Pakistan differs by fare, so check your ticket before you pack.

How we verified this

What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.

Last checked on 3 October 2026. The eight domestic airports, the 24 hour opening, the three hour closing, the 1 hour 20 minute and 45 minute reporting times, the counter visit with original CNIC or passport, the bar on online bag check-in and special services, exit row seats, and the rule that online check-in makes a ticket non-refundable and non-changeable were read on PIA's Web and Mobile Check-In page. The six hour closing, the 90 minute reporting time, retrieval by e-ticket number and the airport counter fix were read in PIA's frequently asked questions. The four-digit email code, the CNIC and passport form, free and paid seats, the cancel button and the SMS and email boarding pass were read in PIA's web and mobile check-in process documents. The 7 kg cabin bag rule was read in PIA's baggage guide. We did not check in with a live ticket.
