Short answer: the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) says rain, wind and thunderstorms are expected at most northern tourist spots from Saturday 10 October to Tuesday 13 October 2026, and it warns that landslides are also likely in that period. The places it names are Murree, Galiyat, Naran, Kaghan, Muzaffarabad, Neelum Valley, Malam Jabba, Kalam, Gilgit and Hunza. Ziarat in Balochistan should stay dry.

PMD issued this in its tourist forecast on 9 October 2026, and we read it on the PMD website the same afternoon. If you have a weekend trip to the hills booked, here is what the forecast says, what it does not say, and what to check before you leave.

PMD expects rain and storms at 10 tourist places from Saturday to Tuesday

The PMD tourist forecast dated 9 October 2026 says partly cloudy weather with rain, wind and thunderstorms is expected over most tourist places from Saturday to Tuesday. It names ten places and adds one line that matters more than the rest: landsliding is also likely during the period.

That is a four day window, 10, 11, 12 and 13 October. It is not a forecast of non-stop rain. The weekly outlook puts Friday's storms in the evening and night, and the tourist forecast speaks of storms at "most" places, not all of them every day.

The rain starts Friday night in the Potohar and upper Punjab

The wet spell begins a day before the tourist window. PMD's daily forecast, issued at 10:30 on 9 October, expects isolated rain and thunderstorms on Friday night in Murree, Galiyat, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Sialkot, Narowal, Rawalpindi and Mianwali.

For Islamabad, the same bulletin gives a dry day on Friday and Saturday, with a chance of rain and thunderstorms at night. It puts the chance on Friday night at 40 per cent. Islamabad's maximum is forecast at 31 to 33°C on Friday and Saturday, and 30 to 32°C on Sunday. So the cities stay warm while the hills turn wet.

We first reported the arrival of this weather system in PMD's forecast of storms in Murree, Rawalpindi and Attock from Friday night. The tourist forecast adds the landslide warning and stretches the risk to Tuesday.

Storms keep coming back to the north until 15 October

PMD's weekly outlook, which runs from 9 to 15 October, shows the north stays unsettled all week. Most of the country is mainly dry, but isolated storms keep returning to the upper areas each day.

  • Friday 9 and Saturday 10 October: storms at isolated places in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, the Potohar region and upper Punjab, with hail possible at a few places.
  • Sunday 11 October: mainly dry, with isolated storms in northeast Balochistan, central and south Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir.
  • Monday 12 to Thursday 15 October: mainly dry, with isolated storms in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Potohar region, northeast Punjab, Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir.

Sunday is the one day that brings a chance of storms to central and south Punjab. Elsewhere in the plains, PMD expects dry and hot weather.

A landslide warning means the road, not just the weather

For a traveller, a landslide warning matters more than the rain. A slide can close a mountain road for hours. People get stuck between two blocked points with no fuel station or hotel nearby.

The steep mountain roads on these trips include the Kaghan Valley road to Naran, the Neelum Valley road, the Karakoram Highway towards Gilgit and Hunza, and the roads up to Kalam and Malam Jabba in Swat. PMD does not name specific roads. That detail comes from the provincial authorities and the highway police on the day.

Here is a simple plan if you are already booked:

  1. Check the road the night before. For Naran, Swat and Chitral, use the official routes listed in how to check KP road status before you travel.
  2. Drive in daylight only. Plan to reach your hotel by mid-afternoon, before the evening storms PMD describes.
  3. Fill the tank and carry food and water. A road closure can last longer than you expect.
  4. Do not stop under a cut slope or next to a stream. Loose rock and fast water are the two main dangers in a storm.
  5. Keep your booking flexible. Ask your hotel now what it charges to move the dates.

Flights to Gilgit and Skardu often feel the weather first

Flights into the northern valleys depend on clear weather for landing, so a storm can cancel them even when the road is open. If your trip includes a flight to Gilgit or Skardu, keep your phone on and check with the airline before you leave for the airport.

If a flight is cancelled, you are entitled to a new seat or a refund. The steps are in getting a refund or new seat for a cancelled Skardu or Gilgit flight. Road travellers going north by bus can compare the options in booking a NATCO bus to Gilgit, Skardu or Hunza.

What PMD did not say

We read the tourist forecast, the daily forecast and the weekly outlook on 9 October 2026. None of them gives a rainfall amount for any tourist place. None of them issues a flood warning. And none of them names a road that is closed.

So this is a caution, not an alarm. Most trips will go ahead. But a trip planned for Saturday to Tuesday should allow for a delay, and a family with small children or older parents may prefer to go after 13 October. Ziarat is the exception: PMD expects it to stay dry for the whole period.

Note that PMD gave no rainfall amount, no flood warning and no road closure in its 9 October 2026 tourist forecast
