An empty cricket stadium at night with floodlights blazing over a green outfield, for the PSL 12 road map

The PSL 12 player auction will be held on 23 January 2027, and franchise direct signings opened on 23 October 2026 and close on 23 November, the Pakistan Super League announced on Friday. The season runs from 18 March to 2 May 2027 with 44 matches, and for the first time it will be played at five to six venues. Each of the eight franchises may sign one marquee player directly, but only one who did not play in PSL 10 or PSL 11.

This is the first dated road map for the new season. On 8 October the league gave only the window. Now the player calendar has dates, though retentions and trades are still to be set.

PSL 12 road map: four dates are now fixed

The league's release of 23 October fixes four dates. Direct signings opened on 23 October 2026 and must be done by 23 November. The player auction is on 23 January 2027. The first match is on 18 March and the final on 2 May.

We read the release on the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) website on 24 October 2026. It lists the steps in this order.

  1. 23 October 2026: direct signings open for all eight franchises.
  2. Next week: a franchise workshop on cricket matters.
  3. 23 November 2026: deadline to finish direct signings.
  4. 23 January 2027: the PSL 12 player auction.
  5. 18 March 2027: PSL 12 starts.
  6. 2 May 2027: the PSL 12 final.

Each franchise can sign one marquee player directly

The direct signing window lets each franchise sign one marquee player outside the auction. The release sets one condition: the player must not have featured in PSL 10 or PSL 11. That points franchises towards overseas names new to the league or returning after a gap.

The release does not name any player, and it does not say what a marquee player is paid. It also does not say whether the rule covers Pakistani players who missed the last two seasons. We would wait for the franchises' own announcements before believing any signing rumour.

Expect a busy month on social media. With eight franchises and one marquee slot each, at most eight players can be signed this way before 23 November. Any claim of a second marquee signing by the same team does not fit the rule as the league has written it.

44 matches in 46 days at five to six venues

PSL 12 will have 44 matches, made up of 40 league games and 4 playoffs, across 46 days. The league says it will use five to six venues, which its chief executive called a first for the competition.

The cities are not named. Which grounds get matches will matter most to fans in cities that have never hosted the league, so that is the line to watch for next.

Retentions, trades and auction rules are still to come

A franchise workshop is planned for next week. The league says it will finalise the deadline for player retentions, the pre-auction trade window, the auction rules and the playing conditions there. None of those dates are public yet.

That matters for fans of particular players. Until the retention deadline is known, nobody can say which stars stay with their current team. Our earlier report on the PSL 12 dates listed these same steps without dates when the window was confirmed on 8 October.

National T20 Gold and Silver now feed the auction

The PCB has lined up its domestic calendar with the PSL pre-season. The National T20 Gold and National T20 Silver tournaments will be the main events for spotting talent before the 23 January auction, the release says.

For a young domestic player, that is the clearest route the board has set out into the league. Strong T20 runs this winter will be in front of franchise scouts weeks before the auction. The PCB also runs a USD 200,000 cricket development award tied to the league.

PSL 12 player auction date is 23 January 2027

What the PCB chairman and the PSL chief said

PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi said Season 12 "will be its most ambitious yet" and that the league is going to more cities than ever. PSL chief executive Salman Naseer said that from now, "the race to build the best squad for HBL PSL 12 is on."

Both said more announcements will follow in the coming weeks. Tickets, fixtures and venues were not part of this release.
