Short answer: The PSX Dividend 20 index tracks the 20 top dividend-paying companies on the Pakistan Stock Exchange, weighted by their dividend yield over the last 12 months. Nine of the 20 are banks, together 46.44 per cent of the index. National Bank of Pakistan is the heaviest at 10.68 per cent, then Kot Addu Power at 7.93 and Pakistan Oilfields at 7.00, on the PSX data portal at about 2 pm on 20 October 2026.

Investors who want income rather than quick gains often ask which Pakistani shares pay the most. PSX answers part of that with this index. We read its full table on the PSX data portal and PSX's description of how it is built, then grouped the 20 shares by business. The grouping is ours, the weights are PSX's.

PSX ranks the 20 companies by 12 month dividend yield

PSX says the index is "designed to track the performance of top 20 dividend-paying companies", and that companies need "a dividend distribution history". They are "ranked and weighted based on trailing 12-month dividend yield", which is dividends paid over the past year divided by the share price.

The five heaviest companies in the PSX Dividend 20 index on 20 October 2026

That is different from the KSE-100, which is weighted by the market value of shares free to trade. In the Dividend 20, a smaller company with a high yield can outweigh a giant. Kot Addu Power, at Rs 24.85 a share, weighs more than United Bank at Rs 410.17.

PSX's page links to a recomposition notice dated 30 April 2026, but it does not give a fixed review calendar. Yields also change every day as prices move, so the weights below are a snapshot.

PSX does not explain the mix. But with almost half the weight in banks, the index will move with bank profits, which depend heavily on interest rates and bank taxes.

A high yield is not the same as a safe income

A trailing yield looks backwards. It tells you what a company paid last year, not what it will pay next. A share can show a high yield simply because its price has fallen, and a company can cut its dividend at the next board meeting.

Tax also cuts what you keep. Most dividends are taxed at 15 per cent for filers and 30 per cent for non-filers, and power producers have their own rates, as set out in dividend tax in Pakistan. A 10 per cent yield before tax becomes 8.5 per cent for a filer.

Payment is the other half. Listed companies must pay cash dividends straight into your bank account within 15 working days of declaring them. If one never arrives, the steps to claim a missing PSX dividend apply. To compare this list with the main index, see the KSE-100 companies and weights.

How to check the Dividend 20 list yourself

The PSX data portal shows the live table for free, with no login. Use it to see current weights, then open any company's page for its payout history before you decide anything. The whole check takes a few minutes.

Steps to check the PSX Dividend 20 list and a company payout history on the PSX data portal
  1. Open dps.psx.com.pk and choose Indices from the Market menu.
  2. Pick PSXDIV20 to see all 20 shares.
  3. Sort the "IDX WTG (%)" column to see the heaviest first.
  4. Click a symbol, then its Payouts tab, for past dividends.
  5. Read the company's announcement for the latest payout dates.

If you buy through an exchange traded fund rather than single shares, check what the fund tracks first. The way to buy an ETF on PSX explains the account you need.

How we verified this

What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.

Last checked 20 October 2026. We read the PSXDIV20 constituent table on the PSX data portal at about 2 pm PKT on 20 October 2026, and PSX's description of the index on its indices page. Weights are intraday and move with prices. The business groups, totals and the yield after tax example are our own arithmetic. PSX does not publish each company's yield on the index table, so we have not listed yields. This is a list of index weights, not advice to buy or sell any share.
