Short answer: The KSE-100 has 100 companies, but 10 of them make up 49.23 per cent of the index. Fauji Fertilizer is the heaviest at 9.09 per cent, then United Bank at 7.70 and Meezan Bank at 5.27. Banks together carry 30.84 per cent. These weights are from the PSX data portal at the close of 19 October 2026.

If you follow the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), the weight table explains most market moves. A 1 per cent move in Fauji Fertilizer shifts the index far more than a 10 per cent move in a small share. We read the full KSE-100 table on the PSX data portal and worked out the totals, so you can see who really drives the index.

The ten heaviest companies carry 49.23 per cent of the KSE-100

Ten companies make up 49.23 per cent of the KSE-100 and the top 20 make up 69.48 per cent. The other 80 shares share the remaining 30.5 per cent. Nine shares weigh less than 0.1 per cent each, so they barely move the index at all.

19Attock Refinery (ATRL)1.14%Rs 1,243.81
20Millat Tractors (MTL)1.13%Rs 292.98

Faysal Bank, Askari Bank, Habib Metropolitan Bank, Fauji Cement and Fatima Fertilizer follow, each near 1 per cent. A share's price tells you nothing about its weight: Attock Refinery costs Rs 1,243.81 but weighs only 1.14 per cent.

Weight comes from the value of shares free to trade

A company's weight is its free-float market value divided by the total for all 100 companies. Free float means shares the public can actually buy and sell, not those held by sponsors or the government. On 19 October the total was Rs 4.67 trillion.

We checked this against the portal's own columns. Fauji Fertilizer shows about 791 million free-float shares and a market value of Rs 424,390 million. That is 9.09 per cent of the Rs 4,669,268 million total, exactly its listed weight. So a big company with few shares on the market weighs less than its size suggests.

Banks make up 30.84 per cent of the index

Grouping the 100 companies by their names, 14 banks carry 30.84 per cent of the KSE-100. Nine oil and gas companies carry 16.40 per cent, three fertilizer makers 12.53 per cent and ten cement makers 8.73 per cent. Those four groups are about two thirds of the index.

Banks1430.84%
Oil and gas916.40%
Fertilizer312.53%
Cement108.73%

That is why a bad day for banks usually means a bad day for the KSE-100. PSX also publishes a separate banks index, BKTI, and an oil and gas index, OGTI, if you want to follow one group. Our grouping is from company names, so it is a guide rather than PSX's official sector list.

Index points equal weight times price change

A share's effect on the index is roughly its weight times its percentage move, times the index level. On 19 October, United Bank weighed 7.70 per cent and fell 0.57 per cent. With the index near 166,420, that is about 73 points, close to the 73.52 the portal showed.

Now compare Sazgar Engineering. It fell 1.77 per cent, three times United Bank's fall, but weighs only 0.68 per cent, so it cost 20.35 points. The full session is in the 19 October KSE-100 close.

How a share's weight and price change combine into KSE-100 index points

Check the current weights yourself on the PSX portal

Weights change every day as prices move, so check the live table before you rely on these figures. The PSX data portal shows every KSE-100 company with its weight, its point contribution and its free float. It takes about a minute.

  1. Open dps.psx.com.pk and choose Indices, then KSE100.
  2. Click the "IDX WTG (%)" column heading to sort by weight.
  3. Read the "IDX POINT" column to see each share's points for the day.
  4. Add up the top 10 weights to see how concentrated the index is today.

The same table is how to find the day's KSE-100 movers. If you want the whole index rather than single shares, an exchange traded fund does that, as explained in how to buy an ETF on PSX. If you are new to shares, start with how to start investing on PSX.

How we verified this

What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.

Last checked 20 October 2026. Every weight, price, free float and market value comes from the PSX data portal's KSE100 table as it stood after the 19 October 2026 close, read and totalled with a script. The top 10 and top 20 shares, the group totals and the worked example are our own arithmetic. Group totals come from company names, not PSX's sector codes. We have not checked PSX's rules on when the index list is reviewed, so we do not give a date for the next change.
