How to Start Investing in the PSX: The Account, the Broker and the Honest Risks
Young investors just drove a record month. The broker account, CDC custody and KYC steps, what it costs, and the risk nobody sells you.

The stock exchange just closed a record month, the reporting credits Gen Z and millennial investors for leading it, and the predictable second wave is arriving: people who have never bought a share searching how to start.
This guide is the boring, correct version of the answer. It will not promise returns, and the section most guides leave out, about what a record month does to beginners, is the one we would most like you to read.
How the machinery actually works
Three institutions matter, and knowing which does what protects you.
The Pakistan Stock Exchange is the market itself. You never deal with it directly; you trade through a broker, a firm licensed by the SECP and listed as a member on psx.com.pk, which we verified loads. Your shares do not sit with the broker: they sit at the Central Depository Company in a sub account in your own name, which is what lets you survive a broker going bad.
That custody detail is the single most important structural fact for a beginner. A licensed broker with your shares at CDC in your name is an ordinary, regulated arrangement. Anyone proposing to hold your investments themselves, in their account, on your behalf, is describing the setup every investment fraud in Pakistan shares.
| Institution | Role | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| PSX | The market where shares trade | You reach it only through a broker |
| SECP | The regulator licensing brokers | Its licence list is your fraud filter |
| Broker | Executes your orders, runs your app | Chosen from the PSX member list |
| CDC | Holds the shares themselves | Custody in your name, not the broker's |
| Your bank | Funds in, withdrawals out | Always an account in your own name |
Opening the account
- Pick a broker from the exchange's member list. Established banks run brokerage arms, and standalone houses compete on app quality and commission. Verify the name on the PSX list, not on the broker's own claims.
- Provide the documents: your CNIC, a bank account in your own name for funding and withdrawals, and the standard know-your-customer details. Account opening is online at most major brokers now.
- Wait for the CDC sub account to be set up in your name, which happens as part of onboarding.
- Fund from your own bank account, place a first small order through the broker's app, and you own shares.
Overseas Pakistanis have a dedicated rail: the Roshan Digital Account through Pakistani banks, which wraps the bank account, remittance and investment access into one KYC. If you are abroad and were about to route money through a relative's account instead, do not: it breaks the your-name-everywhere chain that protects you.
The tax side, before your first sale
Gains and dividends are taxed at source, and the rates are higher if you are not on the Active Taxpayer List, the same filer split that runs through property, vehicles and prize bonds. Checking takes one SMS to 9966, and with the 30 September filing deadline approaching, sorting it before you start investing means every future gain is taxed at the lower schedule from day one.
We are deliberately not printing the current percentages here, because rates move with budgets and a stale number in an old article does damage. Your broker's contract note shows the exact deduction, and directionally the rule never changes: filer pays less.
The record-month trap, stated honestly
Now the part the moment demands.
Record months are when beginners arrive, by definition: the news is loud, a cousin doubled something, the group chats fill with screenshots. Which means the average beginner's first purchase happens near a top, and their first market experience is a drawdown they were not warned about. That is not a prediction about this market this month. It is the standing mechanics of who shows up when.
The defences are unglamorous. Start with an amount whose loss would annoy you rather than hurt you. Buy across months, not in one afternoon, so no single day's price decides your average. Treat the market as a place money lives for years, because over months it is a mood and over years it is a business. And if picking companies is not something you want to learn, licensed mutual funds exist for exactly that, through the same regulated machinery.
And the flat rule, which this month's noise makes urgent: anyone offering guaranteed returns is committing fraud, always, with no exception for the confident ones. VIP signal groups, guaranteed-percentage WhatsApp schemes and committee apps promising market returns without market risk are the finance edition of the scams we keep documenting, and record months are their harvest season too.
Where this fits in your money
Shares are one shelf, not the cupboard. The same audit that decides whether to invest should notice the rest: prize bonds for capital-safe money with a lottery attached, the payments rails your cash actually moves on, and for freelancers, getting paid cleanly before worrying about deploying it. Investing money you might need next month is how the market teaches expensive lessons.
Questions readers are asking
How do I start investing in the PSX?
Open an account with an SECP licensed broker from the PSX member list, complete KYC with your CNIC and a bank account in your name, and trade through the broker's app, with your shares held at CDC in your own name.
How much money do I need to start?
Less than the mythology says: many brokers have no meaningful minimum and single shares of most companies cost little. Start with an amount you can leave invested and add monthly, rather than a lump sum on a loud week.
Where are my shares actually kept?
At the Central Depository Company, in a sub account in your name, not in the broker's own holdings. That separation is your protection if the broker fails.
Can overseas Pakistanis invest in PSX?
Yes, through the Roshan Digital Account route at Pakistani banks, which bundles the account, funding and investment access under your own name abroad.
How are stock profits taxed?
Gains and dividends are taxed at source, at higher rates for non filers. The exact percentages change with budgets, so read them off your broker's contract note, and get on the Active Taxpayer List before you start.
Is a record month a good time to start?
It is a common time to start and a poor reason to. Buying gradually, in small amounts, on a horizon of years, matters far more than which month you begin in, and no honest party guarantees you a return.
