To see which shares moved the KSE-100 today, open dps.psx.com.pk/indices/KSE100 and read the IDX POINT column. It is free, needs no login, and shows how many index points each of the 100 shares added or took away.

That one column answers the question most people ask after a big day on the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX): who did it? On Thursday 8 October 2026, for example, the KSE-100 fell 1,138.50 points. The column showed that United Bank (UBL) alone cost 152.76 of them. We used the PSX data portal to write our daily market reports, and these are the exact steps we follow.

The PSX data portal shows every share's effect on the index

The PSX data portal at dps.psx.com.pk is the exchange's own public data site. It shows index levels, share prices, company announcements and payouts. Its data is delayed by 5 minutes during trading, so the final numbers for a day are the ones stamped after the 3:50 pm PKT close.

Steps graphic showing how to check which shares moved the KSE-100 on the PSX data portal, from opening the index page to sorting by index points
  1. Open dps.psx.com.pk. The KSE-100 level, change and an "As of" time sit at the top.
  2. Check the "As of" stamp. If it says 3:50 pm on the right date, the day is closed.
  3. Open the Market Indices menu and choose KSE100, or go straight to dps.psx.com.pk/indices/KSE100.
  4. Find the IDX POINT column in the table of 100 shares.
  5. Look down that column for the largest minus and plus numbers. If you prefer, copy the table into a spreadsheet and sort it.

The table also shows each share's last day closing price (LDCP), its current price, the change in rupees and in per cent, its index weight, its volume, its free float and its market value. The free float is the part of a company's shares that can actually be traded.

Index points come from weight multiplied by price change

A share's effect on the index depends on two numbers: how big it is in the index and how far its price moved. A small move in a heavy share can cost more points than a big move in a light one.

We checked the sum ourselves for 8 October. UBL had an index weight of 7.78 per cent and fell 1.16 per cent. Multiply 168,580.40 (the previous close) by 7.78 per cent and then by 1.16 per cent and you get about 152 points. The portal showed 152.76. The small gap comes from rounding in the weight and the percentage.

Share, 8 October 2026Index weightPrice changeIndex points
United Bank (UBL)7.78%Down 1.16%Down 152.76
Fauji Fertilizer (FFC)8.98%Down 0.56%Down 85.51
Pakistan State Oil (PSO)1.79%Up 1.11%Up 32.84
Lotte Chemical (LOTCHEM)0.21%Up 3.95%Up 13.54
Yousaf Weaving (YOUW)0.01%Down 4.58%Down 0.67

Yousaf Weaving fell 4.58 per cent that day, the biggest percentage fall of the five above, and cost the index less than one point. That is why a headline about one share "crashing" can mean very little for the index.

Add up the IDX POINT column and you should get the day's change. On 8 October our total was minus 1,138.52 against the headline minus 1,138.50. If your sum is far off, you are probably reading an earlier snapshot taken during trading.

A share's own page shows its circuit breaker limits

Click any symbol to open its page, such as dps.psx.com.pk/company/UBL. The quote panel shows open, high, low, volume, the 52-week range, the price to earnings ratio and a line called CIRCUIT BREAKER. That line gives the lowest and highest price the share is allowed to trade at that day.

Comparison of circuit breaker bands shown on the PSX data portal for UBL, FFC, PSO and a low priced share on 8 October 2026

We read the band for five shares on 8 October. For UBL, FFC, PSO and Lotte Chemical, it sat exactly 10 per cent either side of the previous close. UBL's previous close was Rs 424.23, and its band was Rs 381.81 to Rs 466.65. For Yousaf Weaving, a share priced near Rs 5, the band was Rs 1 either side instead, Rs 3.80 to Rs 5.80. So for cheap shares, a minimum rupee band applies.

The portal also has a separate Circuit Breakers page in its menu. A share stuck at its upper or lower band often has buyers or sellers left waiting, so its last price may not be a price you can actually trade at. The wider rules on PSX circuit breakers and trading halts explain the market-wide halt as well.

An XD tag means the dividend has been separated

Some symbols in the KSE-100 table carry a suffix such as XD, as OGDC did on 8 October. XD stands for ex-dividend. From that day, a buyer of the share does not get the dividend already announced, and the price usually drops by about the dividend amount. That drop is not a loss for a holder who keeps the dividend.

  • Open the Payouts page on the portal to see the dividend and the book closure dates.
  • Check the company's own announcements tab for the board decision.
  • Remember that tax is deducted at source on cash dividends.

The rates for dividend tax on PSX shares depend on whether you are on the Active Taxpayer List.

Five mistakes people make when reading the portal

  1. Reading a midday snapshot as the close. Always check the "As of" stamp.
  2. Comparing percentage changes instead of index points when asking who moved the index.
  3. Treating the KSE-100 and the All Share index as the same thing. The All Share covers every listed company.
  4. Ignoring the XD tag and thinking a share crashed on dividend day.
  5. Assuming a reason. The portal shows numbers, not causes. A company announcement or a PSX notice is the only official explanation.

Our 8 October KSE-100 report is a worked example of these steps. If you want to invest rather than just follow the market, the steps to start investing on PSX come first.

Common questions

Where can I see which shares moved the KSE-100 today?

On the PSX data portal at dps.psx.com.pk/indices/KSE100. Read the IDX POINT column to see the biggest contributors to the day's change.

Is the PSX data portal free?

Yes. It needs no account or login. Data is delayed by 5 minutes during trading hours.

How are index points worked out for one share?

Roughly, the previous index close times the share's index weight times its percentage price change. Our check on UBL for 8 October came within one point of the portal's figure.

What is the daily circuit breaker limit on PSX shares?

On 8 October 2026, the portal showed bands of 10 per cent either side of the previous close for the large shares we checked, and Rs 1 either side for a share priced near Rs 5.

What does XD mean next to a share symbol?

It means the share is trading ex-dividend. A buyer from that day does not receive the dividend already announced.

How we verified this

What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.

Last checked 9 October 2026 at about 6:30 am PKT, using data for the trading session of Thursday 8 October 2026.

The UBL points check, the column total and the percentage bands are our own arithmetic from those pages.
