The KSE-100 index of the Pakistan Stock Exchange fell 1,138.50 points, or 0.68 per cent, on Thursday 8 October 2026 and closed at 167,441.90. Only 18 of the 100 shares in the index went up. 81 went down and 1 did not move.

We read every number in this report on the PSX data portal (dps.psx.com.pk) after the 3:50 pm PKT close. The fall was broad, but banks did the most damage. United Bank (UBL) alone cost the index 152.76 points, and the 14 banks in the index cost 403 points between them, about 35 per cent of the day's loss.

The KSE-100 closed 1,139 points lower at 167,442 on 8 October

Trading was thinner than the day before. Volume in KSE-100 shares was 152.07 million, against 244.16 million on Wednesday. So the fall came on lighter trade, not on a rush to sell.

Every main index fell. The All Share index, which covers every listed company, dropped 0.66 per cent to 101,272.49. The KSE-30 lost 0.80 per cent. The KMI-30 Shariah index fell 0.60 per cent. The oil and gas index, OGTI, fell the most, 1.32 per cent.

Banks, fertiliser and oil shares caused most of the fall

Three groups explain about 64 per cent of the loss. Banks cost 403 points, the three fertiliser makers cost 182 points and the four big oil and gas explorers cost 146 points. Cement, often a big mover, cost only about 54 points.

Points lost depend on two things: how far a share fell and how big its weight is in the index. UBL fell 1.16 per cent, but it is about 7.8 per cent of the KSE-100, so it cost the most. Fauji Fertilizer (FFC) fell only 0.56 per cent, but it is the heaviest share in the index at about 9 per cent, so it still cost 85.51 points.

Only Pakistan State Oil added more than 15 points

The shares that rose added just 70.55 points in total. Pakistan State Oil (PSO) did almost half of that on its own, rising 1.11 per cent to Rs 359.81 and adding 32.84 points. Lotte Chemical rose 3.95 per cent, the best percentage gain in the index, but its weight is small, so it added 13.54 points.

Bar chart of the five shares that added the most points to the KSE-100 on 8 October 2026, led by PSO at about 33 points

Abbott Laboratories added 7.18 points, Attock Petroleum 2.92 and HBL Growth Fund 2.82. After those five, no share added more than about 2.3 points.

The close of 167,441.90 is about 12.4 per cent below the 52-week high of 191,032.73 and about 16.2 per cent above the 52-week low of 144,119.44. The index is down 3.80 per cent since 1 January 2026.

Comparison of the KSE-100 close on 8 October 2026 with its 52-week high, 52-week low and its change this year

This week has been choppy. Monday's close in our 5 October report was 165,867.31. Tuesday brought a strong rebound, and Wednesday a small gain to 168,580.40 in the 7 October close. Thursday took back about 1,139 points of that, leaving the index 1,574.59 points above Monday's level.

No official reason for the fall has been published. PSX, the SECP and the State Bank of Pakistan did not issue any statement about the session. Broker notes that offer reasons are opinion, not confirmed fact, so we do not repeat them here.

What a 1,139 point fall means for your savings

A fall of 0.68 per cent in one day is ordinary for the KSE-100. The KSE-30 fell 0.80 per cent, far short of the swing of roughly 5 per cent that can freeze the whole market. If you hold a share fund or shares worth Rs 100,000 that move with the index, a day like this takes about Rs 680 off their value on paper. You lose nothing until you sell.

Before you react to one day, run through these checks:

  1. Ask when you need the money. Savings for fees or rent due within a year or two are better kept out of shares.
  2. Look at how much of your portfolio sits in banks. On 8 October, banks alone caused about a third of the fall.
  3. Check whether you bought on borrowed money. Margin trading can force a sale on a day like this.
  4. Compare the loss with your plan, not with the headline number of points.

If you are new, the steps to start investing on PSX explain the broker, the account and the CDC sub-account. The rules on PSX circuit breakers and trading halts explain what happens on a much bigger fall.
