The KSE-100 index of the Pakistan Stock Exchange fell 352.63 points, or 0.21 per cent, on Friday 9 October 2026 and closed at 167,089.27. More shares rose than fell, 50 against 48, but four big banks pulled the index down on their own.

We read every number in this report on the PSX data portal (dps.psx.com.pk) after the 4:50 pm PKT close. Habib Bank, United Bank, MCB Bank and National Bank cost the index 273 points between them. All 14 banks in the index together cost 277 points, about 79 per cent of the day's loss. For the full week, the KSE-100 ended 1,066 points lower than where it started.

Trading was quiet. Volume in KSE-100 shares was 109.91 million, against 152.07 million on Thursday.

Most other indices also slipped, but only a little. The All Share index, which covers every listed company, fell 0.15 per cent to 101,117.39. The KSE-30 fell 0.28 per cent to 49,841.70. The KMI-30 Shariah index was almost flat, down 0.02 per cent. The banking index, BKTI, fell 0.60 per cent, more than any of them.

Four big banks caused almost the whole fall

The day was not a broad sell-off. 50 of the 100 shares in the index went up, 48 went down and 2 did not move. The shares that rose added 310.59 points. The shares that fell took away 663.25 points. Banks made the difference.

Habib Bank (HBL) fell 1.37 per cent and cost 85.22 points. United Bank (UBL) fell 0.57 per cent, but it is about 7.8 per cent of the index, so it still cost 74.52 points. MCB Bank fell 1.27 per cent and cost 71.70 points. National Bank fell 1.44 per cent and cost 41.92 points.

Fatima Fertilizer (FATIMA)Down 1.76%27.11
Lucky Cement (LUCK)Down 0.43%, ex-dividend27.09

OGDC and Lucky Cement were marked ex-dividend on the portal. That means anyone buying them on Friday does not get the latest dividend. A share often falls on its ex-dividend day for that reason alone, so part of their fall is not a loss of confidence. Our guide to dividend tax on PSX shares explains how that dividend is taxed.

Engro Fertilizers and a REIT led the gainers

Engro Fertilizers (EFERT) rose 0.82 per cent to Rs 192.02 and added 33.21 points, the most of any share. TPL REIT Fund I jumped 7.65 per cent, the best percentage gain in the index, and added 31.20 points. Engro Holdings, Pakistan Services and Pakistan Oilfields each added about 22 points.

Bar chart of the five shares that added the most points to the KSE-100 on 9 October 2026, led by Engro Fertilizers at about 33 points

Pakistan Services moved on very little trade. The portal shows only 114 of its shares changed hands. A big percentage move on so few shares tells you little about the market.

The KSE-100 lost 1,066 points over the week

The week began at 168,155.49, the close on Friday 2 October. It ended at 167,089.27, a fall of 1,066.22 points, or 0.63 per cent. The days in between were bumpy.

You can read each day in our reports for 5 October, 7 October and 8 October. The index now sits about 12.5 per cent below its 52-week high of 191,032.73 and about 15.9 per cent above its 52-week low of 144,119.44.

No official reason for Friday's fall has been published. PSX, the SECP and the State Bank of Pakistan did not issue a statement about the session. Broker views on the reasons are opinion, so we do not repeat them.

What a 353 point fall means for your savings

A fall of 0.21 per cent is a small move for the KSE-100. If you hold shares or a share fund worth Rs 100,000 that move with the index, Friday took about Rs 210 off their value on paper. Over the whole week, the same holding lost about Rs 630. You lose nothing until you sell.

Before the market opens again on Monday, run through these checks:

  1. Look at how much of your money sits in bank shares. Banks caused most of the loss on both Thursday and Friday.
  2. Check if a share you own went ex-dividend. A fall on that day is normal, and the dividend reaches you if you held it before.
  3. Ask when you need the money. Savings for fees or rent due soon are safer outside shares.
  4. Compare the week's loss with your plan, not with the headline number of points.

You can check the movers yourself each day with our guide to the PSX data portal. If you are new, the steps to start investing on PSX explain the broker, the account and the risks.
