How to Register a Christian Marriage in Pakistan: 4 Days' Notice, 2 Witnesses and the 1872 Act
A Christian marriage in Pakistan needs a licensed minister or Marriage Registrar, 4 days' notice, 2 witnesses and a 6am to 7pm ceremony. See every step here.

A Christian marriage in Pakistan must be performed under the Christian Marriage Act, 1872, by a licensed minister of religion, an ordained clergyman, or before a government Marriage Registrar, between 6am and 7pm, with at least two witnesses. Give written notice first. The certificate can issue four days after notice, and the marriage must take place within two months or the notice lapses. A marriage outside the Act is void, so the paperwork is not a formality.
The Christian Marriage Act applies to every marriage in which one or both partners are Christian. It is a federal law from 1872, still in force, and we read its current text on the Pakistan Code on 20 October 2026. It looks old because it is old. But its steps decide whether a church wedding gives you a valid, provable marriage.
This guide covers who can marry you, the notice and waiting days, the age rules, and how the marriage gets registered.
Five kinds of person can lawfully marry a Christian couple
Section 5 lists who may solemnize a Christian marriage in Pakistan. Anyone else cannot, and section 4 says a marriage solemnized otherwise is void. Before you fix a date, ask your pastor or priest which category they fall under and whether they hold a licence.
| Who | Condition | Section |
|---|---|---|
| A person who has received episcopal ordination | Must follow the rites of their own church | 5(1) |
| A clergyman of the Church of Scotland | Must follow that church's rites | 5(2) |
| A minister of religion licensed under the Act | Licence granted by the provincial government by gazette notification | 5(3), 6 |
| A Marriage Registrar | Appointed by the provincial government for a district | 5(4), 7 |
| A person licensed to certify marriages of Pakistani Christians | Licensed under section 9 | 5(5) |

Licences and Marriage Registrars are provincial matters. So a minister licensed by the Punjab government is licensed in Punjab. If you marry in another province, check that the minister's licence covers it.
Give written notice, then wait at least four days
For a wedding by a licensed minister, one partner gives the minister written notice with both names, occupations, addresses, how long each has lived there, and the church. The minister posts it in the church. After four days, and a personal declaration, the minister can issue the certificate.
- Choose the church and a minister licensed under the Act, or an ordained clergyman.
- One partner gives written notice in the form in the Act's first schedule.
- The minister affixes the notice in a conspicuous place in the church.
- One partner appears in person and makes a solemn declaration that there is no legal bar to the marriage.
- After four days, the minister issues a certificate of notice and declaration.
- Hold the wedding within two months, between 6am and 7pm, with two witnesses.
- The minister enters the marriage in the marriage register and you ask for a certified copy.

The two month limit is strict. Section 26 says if the marriage does not happen within two months of the certificate, the certificate and everything done on it is void, and you must give a fresh notice. Plan the date before you file.
A wedding in a private home is possible, but section 14 sends the notice to the district Marriage Registrar, who posts it in his office. That adds a step.
The Marriage Registrar route works without a church
Couples can also marry before a government Marriage Registrar. Notice goes to the Registrar of the district where you live, who posts it and enters it in a public Marriage Notice Book. After four days and an oath, the Registrar issues a certificate, and the wedding happens in the Registrar's presence with two witnesses.
Under section 51 the couple can use any form of ceremony they choose. But each partner must declare that they know of no lawful impediment, and must take the other as lawful wife or husband before the Registrar and witnesses. The Registrar then registers the marriage in duplicate under section 54, signed by the couple, the Registrar and two witnesses.
If you live in different districts, both district Registrars must receive notice. And as with the church route, section 52 voids the notice if the marriage does not happen within two months.
Age and consent rules differ by place
Under the Act, anyone under 21 counts as a minor for notice purposes. A minor needs the consent of the father, or a guardian if the father has died, or the mother if there is no guardian. When a partner is a minor, the Marriage Registrar route needs 14 days after notice instead of four.
Part VI of the Act sets minimum ages for marriages of Pakistani Christians certified without notice. The Pakistan Code text shows the man over 16 and the woman over 13 in general. For Islamabad, a 2024 amendment, Act XIV of 2024, raised both to over 18.
Do not rely on those older numbers outside Islamabad. Separate child marriage laws punish marriages below set ages, and some provinces have raised them. For Islamabad's rules, see our guide on how to report a child marriage in Islamabad. The safe course everywhere is that both partners are 18 or older.

Keep the certified copy, then update NADRA
The register entry is your legal proof. Section 63 lets you search the register and get a certified copy on payment of the fee. Ask for the copy on the wedding day. Registers eventually go to the provincial Registrar General of Births, Deaths and Marriages.
After the wedding, the wife or husband may want to change marital status or spouse name on the CNIC. The steps to update your CNIC after marriage apply to Christians too, and you need the marriage certificate for it. Ask NADRA in advance which certificate it will accept, as the Act does not mention NADRA at all.
For a computerised certificate, our explainer on the NADRA marriage certificate covers the union council side. If you plan to use the certificate abroad, it may also need attestation by the foreign office.
Common questions
Is a Christian marriage valid without registration in Pakistan?
A marriage must be solemnized under the Christian Marriage Act, 1872. Section 4 says one solemnized otherwise is void, so always marry through a licensed minister, ordained clergyman or Marriage Registrar.
How many days' notice is needed?
At least four days after the notice is received. If one partner is a minor and you use a Marriage Registrar, 14 days.
What time can a Christian wedding be held?
Between 6am and 7pm under section 10. Some Church of England, Church of Rome and Church of Scotland clergy have exceptions under special licence.
How many witnesses are required?
At least two credible witnesses, besides the minister or Marriage Registrar.
What if we do not marry within two months of notice?
The notice and certificate become void, and you must give a new notice.
Can a Christian marry a non-Christian under this Act?
The Act applies when one or both partners are Christian. Ask your church about its own rules, and take legal advice on the effect under the other partner's personal law.
How we verified this
What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.
We read the Christian Marriage Act, 1872 on the Pakistan Code on 20 October 2026, including the note on the Islamabad amendment by Act XIV of 2024. We did not check provincial lists of licensed ministers or Marriage Registrars, the current fee for a certified copy, or NADRA's document list for Christian couples. Confirm these with your church and district office.
