The Supreme Court of Pakistan now has an AI assistant that answers case questions in plain language, 24 hours a day. It is called the Smart Judicial Assistant, it lives at sja.scp.gov.pk, and an account is free. The Court briefed the Supreme Court Bar Association on it on 9 October 2026.

You type a question such as "when is my appeal fixed?" and it looks up the answer from the Court's own records. It covers case search, cause lists, hearing dates, advocate details, certified copy status, early hearing applications, video link details, adjournments and the judges' sitting roster. Until now, each of those sat in a different place on the Court's website.

The Smart Judicial Assistant puts nine Supreme Court services in one chat

The Smart Judicial Assistant is a free AI chat service from the Supreme Court of Pakistan. It answers questions about Supreme Court cases, hearings and lawyers by searching the Court's records. You sign up with an email address or a Google account, then ask in everyday words.

The Court's press release of 9 October, issued through the Press Information Department as PR No. 117, says the platform "brings together" nine services through a single interface. The SJA's own home page lists the same nine. We opened it on 10 October 2026 and read every feature it lists.

Feature on the SJAWhat you can ask
Case searchFind a case by case number, diary number or party name
Cause listSee the daily list of cases for any bench
Fixation and hearing detailsWhen and where your case is fixed
Advocate informationA lawyer's enrolment, status and contact details
Certified copy statusWhere your copy request has reached
Early hearing requestStatus of an application for an earlier date
Video link informationDetails for appearing from another city
Adjournment informationGeneral and case-specific adjournments
Sitting rosterWhich judges sit on which bench today

The advocate lookup is worth a minute before you pay anyone. It is a quick way to verify a lawyer's licence and see whether the person can actually appear in the Supreme Court.

How to use the Smart Judicial Assistant in four steps

Sign up free, confirm your email, sign in and type your question. Keep your case number or diary number ready, because the assistant finds a case fastest by number. A party name also works but can return several matches.

  1. Open sja.scp.gov.pk. Use the address exactly as written. It is a Supreme Court domain ending in scp.gov.pk.
  2. Create a free account. The site offers sign up with an email address or a Google account. No paperwork is asked for.
  3. Verify your email and sign in. Open the confirmation message and follow its link before you sign in.
  4. Ask your question. Type or speak it. Give the case number, diary number, party name or the advocate's name, then read the answer.

A diary number is the number the Court's filing office gives a petition when it is first received, before it gets a regular case number. If your lawyer filed recently and you only have a diary number, use that.

What else the Chief Justice told the Bar on 9 October

The same briefing gave three practical updates for litigants. The Supreme Court heard 395 tax cases in September 2026. It fixed 192 pending early hearing applications before the afternoon bench at 1:00 pm. And jail petitions are fixed in the order they were filed.

Chief Justice Yahya Afridi led the visit to the Bar, with Justice Malik Shahzad Ahmad Khan, Justice Muhammad Shafi Siddiqui and Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb. Haroon Rashid, President of the Supreme Court Bar Association, took part with other office bearers.

  • Early hearing. With the 192 old applications now fixed, fresh cases will be listed before the afternoon bench. The Registrar can approve processing of an early hearing application, but only on "cogent and justifiable grounds".
  • Jail petitions. Older petitions go first, but only once the case record has arrived from the lower court. A petition whose record is missing cannot be fixed until it comes.
  • Video guides. The Court has made short videos showing how to use its online services. They were shown at the briefing.

That jail petition rule matters for families. If a relative's petition seems stuck, the first thing to ask the lawyer is whether the record has reached the Supreme Court. The answer to "why is it not fixed" is often there.

The SJA is part of a reform report released on 10 October

A day after the briefing, on 10 October 2026, the Supreme Court released "Journey Through Reform and Innovation 2026". It records the reforms made from November 2024 to September 2026 under an 86 point Reform Action Plan, including digital services like the SJA.

The Court's press release No. 163 says the report covers case disposal, long pending cases, digital services, model trial courts and the "responsible use of artificial intelligence". The full report is on the Supreme Court's website. We have not yet checked its figures one by one, so we do not repeat them here.

What the SJA does not do yet

The SJA gives information. It does not file a case, pay a fee or decide anything. Three features are still listed as "in progress" on its home page: a predicted hearing date, mobile apps for Android and iOS, and answers in Urdu, Sindhi, Punjabi, Pashto and Balochi.

For now the reply language promise is limited to "your preferred language", and the full list of six languages is marked as upcoming. So expect English to work best for the moment. The Court's older mobile app on Google Play and its online case search on scp.gov.pk still work alongside it.

Two more cautions. First, the SJA covers the Supreme Court only. For a high court or district court case, you still need to check a court case status online on that court's own website. Second, an AI answer can be wrong. Before you travel to Islamabad for a hearing, confirm the date on the official cause list or with your Advocate on Record, the lawyer who files your papers in the Supreme Court.

If you cannot afford a lawyer at all, the Court's helpline now handles that too. Since 9 October, a call to 1818 can start a request for free legal aid through a Bar Council, with a decision due within seven days.
