US Visa Administrative Processing in Pakistan: Most Cases Clear in 60 Days, Ask After 90
US visa in administrative processing in Pakistan? Most cases clear within 60 days of the interview. Wait 90 days, then ask through the Navigator. Full steps.

If the US consular officer in Islamabad or Karachi tells you your visa needs administrative processing, the US Mission in Pakistan says most cases are resolved within 60 days of the interview. It asks applicants to wait at least 90 days from the interview, or from sending extra documents, before asking about the case.
Administrative processing is the extra checking some files need after the interview, often called 221(g) after the section of US law used on the refusal slip. We read the US Embassy and Consulates in Pakistan pages on nonimmigrant visas and visa services on 20 October 2026. Here is what they say, and what you can do while you wait.
Most administrative processing ends within 60 days
The US Mission says applicants are told at the interview if their case needs administrative processing. While most of these cases are resolved within 60 days of the interview, it says the exact timing varies from case to case. Some take longer, and the Mission gives no upper limit.
| Stage | What the US Mission says |
|---|---|
| At the interview | You are told if administrative processing is needed |
| Usual time | Most cases resolved within 60 days |
| When to ask | Wait at least 90 days first |
| Where to ask | The Nonimmigrant Visa Navigator |

Sixty days is a typical figure, not a promise. We would not book flights, pay for courses or resign from a job on the strength of it. Wait for the passport request or the visa.
Wait 90 days before you ask about your case
The US Mission asks applicants to wait at least 90 days from the date of the interview, or from the date they sent supplemental documents, before asking about the status of their case. An enquiry sent earlier is unlikely to get a useful answer, and may get none.
If the officer asked for more papers, the 90 day count starts again from the day you submitted them. So send everything requested in one go, clearly labelled with your case details. A half complete reply only restarts the wait.
When you do ask, use the Nonimmigrant Visa Navigator on the embassy website. The Mission says the call centre cannot give information about an application's status over the phone. It also says it will not reply to questions already answered on its websites.
Use the navigator, not the call centre, for a pending case
For a pending application, the US Mission directs enquiries through its Nonimmigrant Visa Navigator. The visa information call centre on (+92) (21) 111-234-111 handles general questions, but it cannot tell you the status of a case. Scheduling and fee collection are run by a contractor, CGI.
- Note the date of your interview, or the date you sent extra documents.
- Count 90 days from that date before you send any enquiry.
- Read the published information first, since repeat questions get no reply.
- Send your enquiry through the Nonimmigrant Visa Navigator on the embassy site.
- Include your full name, passport number and case details exactly as on your form.

The Mission lists CGI's site for Pakistan, ustraveldocs.com, as the place for interview scheduling, information, fee payment and document delivery. Use only the links on the embassy site. Lookalike sites ask for fees they have no right to collect.
Your visa fee receipt is valid for 365 days
The US visa application fee, called the MRV fee, is valid for 365 days from the date the receipt is issued. You must schedule an interview, or submit a waiver application, within that period. The interview itself does not have to happen inside the 365 days.
This matters if you paid but delayed booking while waiting on something else. Book the appointment before the receipt's first anniversary, even if the earliest slot is later. The Mission also says visa fees are non-refundable and non-transferable.

Since 11 August 2025, the Mission says nearly all nonimmigrant visa applicants in Pakistan need an in-person interview, including children under 14 and adults over 79. A narrow group of B1/B2 renewals can still skip it, which we cover in renewing a US visitor visa without an interview.
Islamabad and Karachi prioritise different visa types
The US Embassy in Islamabad prioritises student and exchange visitor visas, F and J. The Consulate General in Karachi prioritises F and J visas and temporary employee visas, including H, L, O, P, E, I, R, Q, TD/TN and C1D. Interviews are by appointment only.
| Post | Priority visa types | Address on the Mission site |
|---|---|---|
| US Embassy Islamabad | F and J | Diplomatic Enclave, Ramna 5 |
| US Consulate General Karachi | F, J and work visas such as H and L | Plot 3-5, New TPX Area, Mai Kolachi Road |
The Islamabad visa section works 8:00 am to 1:00 pm, Monday to Friday, except Pakistani and American holidays. In Karachi, the Consulate asks applicants to arrive 15 minutes before their slot. For a true emergency, such as a medical case, you can ask CGI for an expedited appointment.
Two more rules from the Mission apply to many applicants. Students and several work categories must set social media accounts to public, as set out in which US visas need public social media. And Pakistan is not among the 39 countries under the January 2026 entry proclamation, which we explain in Pakistan and the US 39 country list.

How we verified this
What we checked, where we read it, and what we could not confirm.
We read the US Embassy and Consulates in Pakistan pages on nonimmigrant visas and on visa services on 20 October 2026. The State Department's own site, travel.state.gov, blocked our requests that day, so we could not read its pages on administrative processing, fees or reciprocity, and we do not quote a fee amount here. The term 221(g) is the common name for this step and does not appear on the pages we read.
